I agree.

On a side note, I just watched Spike Lee's "25th Hour" and I really, really hope that the rumors of it coming out by Criterion are true.

I concur. And for that matter, let's get The Virgin Spring on Blu-Ray!

I watched 25th Hour during my PSH tribute week. Whilst he was good in this film I feel Ed Norton does not get the due credit he deserves. This film would be a great edition to the Collection

For what it's worth, the two Mesrine films are available on Netflix (streaming). They're in my queue, but I haven't gotten around to watching them yet.

There was, however, an actual remake of Five Came Back, also made by RKO and the same director (John Farrow): Back from Eternity (1956). Not quite as good as the original, but still a solid piece of filmmaking. It'd be nice if we could get a Blu-ray double feature of the two versions, even if as a Warner Archive release (Warner Archive has Back from Eternity on DVD-R, but not Five Came Back).
I probably used the wrong word (as I often do) to link the two. Remake was not what I meant at all in regards to Flight of the Phoenix. Similarities or ideas borrowed such as
[Show spoiler]The plane crashing in a extremely remote area. Having to repair the plane themselves. The conflict amongst the passengers. The threat of a outside tribal group, etc.
probably would have been a better use of words on my part. In any terms it's a pretty innovative and exciting film. It's often noted as a textbook example of an A film on a B budget. I've seen the official remake and the weakest link, surprisingly, to me anyway, is Rod Steiger hamming it up in sharp contrast to the sort of simmering menace of Joseph Calleia in the original.
To keep this Criterion related-the original has the great C. Aubrey Smith in it as does The Four Feathers.

Likewise, to seeing it on TCM. Such a wild and fun movie. A +1 to the idea of it as a stand alone title with extras.

Talk of overdue Criterion titles we want how about some David Lynch titles and "Scanners." Also wouldn't mind them upgrading the rest of the Jim Jarmusch titles to blu-ray like "Night on Earth."

Saw two Czech New Wave films last week -- Diamonds of the Night and Martyrs of Love, both by Jan Němec. They are the best films I've seen so far this year and are screaming for Criterion treatment. They're part of a touring retrospective of Němec's work, and the new prints I saw are rich and beautiful. I want more Czech New Wave. And where is Closely Watched Trains? These films are very worthy.

OK so apparently The Grand Budapest Hotel only had a limited release on 3/7, I believe 3-4 cities. IMDB doesn't list a wider release on the release page.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2278388/...?ref_=tt_dt_dt

So is it not getting a nationwide release?

Probably not. Typical fox searchlight. I'll be relying on my local art house to see it.

Anyone think Criterion would ever pick up "Panic Room"?

Most likely staggered and given a more thorough wide release in May.

It's clever marketing, as doing this "Wider but still not wide" limited release means anyone who really wants to see it will go and see it and tell everyone else how much they like it (as, if they really do want to see it, they're much more likely to like it than Joe Public) for two months.

Closely Watched Trains is one of many, many Criterion titles that are DVD only. Still, that's much better than nothing!

No. It'll probably come from echo bridge. I can't even see Sony bothering with it directly. I want to complete my Fincher collection but if Criterion released it, I'd have to assume I've entered the twilight zone.

What about the crime, mystery, comedy cult classic Murder by Death? It hasn't been release on blu-ray yet, which is a damn shame! Would this be a title for Criterion?

Edward Norton is one of my favorite modern actors. He is so great.

I think Spike Lee tweeted that he was talking to Criterion about it a couple years ago, but nothing has surfaced yet.

I don't think so. I understand that David Fincher is in the collection, but it's viewed as one of his weakest works by many (although I enjoyed it).

I honestly wasn't a big fan of the film.

I mean I thought it was okay for a good portion of the film, but I think the ending is way too silly, rushed, and underwhelming (though I guess that's sort of the intentions of it).

Well, in Eastbound & Down, Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) uses Criterions as the plural:

"Do not mess with these, they're all alphabetized. Don't touch my Criterions!"

So if it's good enough for Kenny, it's good enough for me.

This is the company that released Armageddon & The Rock were talking about. A C- Fincher film is still better than a A+ Bay film any day and I enjoy Armageddon (The Rock bores me though)
