Any thoughts?
It is in the top 5 of my favorite Lean films. It is a great story that is stronger in the beginning, but wrapping up appropriately. I think that this was comparable to most of Dickens works, since the stories were released as serials in newspapers one chapter at a time. I also love John Mills's and Ale Guiness's performances.

It would still be Criterion I would say. Usually I would just say I got a few Criterion titles.

The original 1954 version of Godzilla is my second favorite monster movie behind the 1933 original version of King Kong. These two movies are brilliant for different reasons, though, and Godzilla has a tangible menace that King Kong lacks. The visual limitations during Godzilla's rampage through Tokyo work to the film's advantage, because it actually looks like post-WWII-era newsreel footage.

I'm fortunate that I have been able to see both of these movies on the big screen.

I completely agree with you, one of my all time favorite films!

There are some similarities between Five Came Back and Flight of the Phoenix, but not enough to think of the latter as any kind of remake, though.

There was, however, an actual remake of Five Came Back, also made by RKO and the same director (John Farrow): Back from Eternity (1956). Not quite as good as the original, but still a solid piece of filmmaking. It'd be nice if we could get a Blu-ray double feature of the two versions, even if as a Warner Archive release (Warner Archive has Back from Eternity on DVD-R, but not Five Came Back).

Serious answer: The plural of criterion is criteria, but the plural of Criterion would be Criterions since it's a proper noun.

It'd be really nice if Criterion released a "David Lean Directs Charles Dickens" set with this and Oliver Twist to complement their Lean/Coward set.

I just finished watching I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932). This is such a great pre-Code movie/proto-noir movie, and it fits my own tastes (a love for prison escape movies, etc.) like a glove.

I'm glad that I shelled out for the Controversial Classics Collection. I wish that Criterion would pick up some of these Warner flicks for Blu-ray, though.

Just finished La Haine, first time viewing... It was absolutely superb! I will have to watch again soon and finish the extras but as it stands now that was my favorite CC title so far. The cinematography is outstanding and the acting is pretty strong. Just a great title for my tastes.

Vincent Cassel is my favorite actor. Have you seen the Mesrine films?

Is it the simplicity of the design or the colors?

I started my Pearls of the Czech New Wave set last night with Daisies, and what a film! Of the 4-5 Czech New Wave films I've seen so far this impressed me the most. Extraordinary stuff, great PQ as well. I only wonder why it wasn't deemed sufficient enough for a standalone proper release rather than Eclipse; director Chytilova is still alive and active enough and surely could have helped with extras and so on. But already I'm extremely glad I bought this Eclipse set.

A criterion Virgin Suicides is so ridiculously overdue that it actually makes me angry. I need this, criterion. Come on.

Daisies is the reason I bought that set. I saw it on TCM on night and had to have it.
