I don't really find it fair to spend $35 for a replacement case due to Criterion's poor DigiPaking abilities when TNOTH first came out.
IMO, they should offer replacement packaging for anything that they offer that is cardboard. I'm sure that the stuff would sell. I am nowhere near as OCD as I used to be, but I'm sure that many of us would happily spend 5 bucks or how much ever.

I'm with you on that.

While I personally don't care if something is in a DigiPack or not, if something is as badly damaged as almost ALL of the DigiPacks of TNOTH, then they should offer one.

The problem there is they'd have to produce 2 different sized booklets. I don't know if that's the case for Night of the Hunter's booklet, but the digipaks I own have larger booklets that wouldn't fit in a standard Criterion case.

Its life, get over it, sorry to be rude but it's annoying hearing people whining about stuff like this.

You bought that knowing it may be flimsy or its only option at the time, Criterion owe you nothing in terms of a free replacement case - if I bought an iPod for example and it scratched easily, and then next year or so Apple released updated version with newer better material that doesn't scratch or damage as easy - Apple wouldn't give you a free replacement.

Just get the cover art and print yourself, or take to a print place to have printed better quality and just slip it in a replacement case or old case you have lying around, people did that for Zatochi box set and other Criterions, or just fork out for the new one and sell old one?

Yes I have the old digpak too and frustrated it is very flimsy card and damaged easy, but I'm not going to beg for a free replacement when they just released a case version - if you had complained nearer time you bought it they could have refunded or replaced it.

Again, sorry if I am coming across as rude or out of order, but just frustrates me :P

You realize that a lot of TNOTH copies are beat up and what not, right? It's not a matter of "that one exception".

I am aware of that, but then the person who bought it should have sent back for a refund or asked for a discount?

I complained and I was offered full refund and was allowed to keep it - you can't just have it for years or w/e and then expect a refund or free replacement.

Just try sell the old copy, people are selling on Amazon for like £29+ and then use to buy new copy?

I was not aware of complaining to them and being sent a full refund.

Also, I never said I wanted a free replacement case. All I'm saying is that now that they're repackaging it, it would be nice for them to start offering a replacement case program.

Well, this was with Amazon so not sure how Criterion work tbh as I'm from UK.

I must have misunderstood, so they sell the case separately with no discs for a cheaper price? like the old replacement cases? if so then my bad and yeah that would be good :P

But I'm sure any company that sells damaged/faulty goods will offer refund or try replace for you.

Also, good thing about TNOTH is its mostly black, what I did about the damage was coloured the white parts from the crushed or scratched parts in with black marker, just hides the dents and stuff a lot better :P

I don't want snapcases. I am fine with the cardboard, but I'd like to have the option to purchase a clean new package. I mentioned (or alluded to it, maybe) that I only have 1 in my collection that I was a little bit disappointed with and that is the David Lean Set. Nice set. Incredibly well done. I have no problem with the fact that they chose the packaging that they did, but right out of the cellophane, my box kinda looked/looks like s**t.

Yes, Criterion has offered replacement cases for The 400 Blows, Bottle Rocket, Chungking Express, The Last Emperor, The Last Metro, Last Year At Marienbad, The Man Who Fell To Earth, El Norte, and The Third Man. These films were originally packaged in a paper-like case with a slipcover.

I bought The Night of the Hunter during a flash sale several years ago and everybody's reactions to the packaging seemed common so I just let it slide.

Being that they are re-releasing the film ($44.99 on Amazon) in a plastic case now, it would seem courteous of them to throw it up on the website for $5.00, in similar fashion to the replacement cases of the past.

Ask someone you know who have bought to scan in, or ask someone here - some websites do this and allow people to download, but not sure if they do Criterions, just standard films.

Heres one for old version:

http://www.cdcovers.to/blu-ray/25684...rion-r1-custom

Might need to change the spine though - so if you have copy just scan in and photoshop out any dents etc?

I'm such a massive fan of The Night of the Hunter that I might conceivably buy this movie in the new packaging, and keep my existing cardboard case as a backup copy. No way I'm going to pay normal price for it, though. Maybe at the next 50% sale, combined with coupons on top of that.

you see, though, as a general solution to people who are unhappy with damaged digipacks, this doesn't work, as NOTH, is not my problem. I don't have that film. and the David Lean custom covers I saw suck. ...and they require some kind of membership to access them on the web site I found them on

I have no problems at all with the Zatoichi packaging. I'm keeping the original as it is.

Nor me! Its stunning, but I think people wanted it to fit on shelf perfectly with others so they put it in a similar case that could hold most the discs, looked good when ti fitted in, but no the original packaging is stunning.

I was starting to think that I was the only person that has the original Zatoichi package on my shelf. All of the discs arrived in pristine condition and I have no problem with taking the discs out or putting them back in the sleeve. I'm not worried about getting scratches on the disc in the future. I can understand why people would want a standard case that would fit easily on their shelf though. I have attached a pic of how I have my set displayed right now.

I guess it looks somewhat odd this way, but I prefer this over it sticking out an inch or two beyond the shelf. It is also easier for me to keep the original case displayed since my collection is probably much smaller than most members here, so I have more shelf space.

ooooh I can't do that with the DVDs and Blus, I have them all in spine number but keep the DVDs and Blu's separate lol, also with my Blu's I separate eagain, spin order but keep digipaks together and the normal cases together, bugs me that the digipaks are slightly taller and deeper than the normal cases (DVDs don't have this issue).

But yeah thats how id display the Zatochi set, the artwork is beautiful - although at first I always thought it the stickers on the plastic rap were part of the actual box, which I liked lol. I can see why people displace it as its not the conventional Criterion Packaging, but its such a beautiful set
