Just received King of the Hill and Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion. I really dig these digipacks (though I understand why some of you don't) so I hope Criterion won't stop making them.

Yeah they are great quality, all the new digipaks have been so solid and well put together, I wish Criterion did digipaks for every release haha, the normal cases feel cheaper after experiencing the newer digipaks.

Im not too keen on the stock used for Fantastic Mr Fox though, its a bit shinier than the others and feels cheaper (it's trudy though) the others are more matte.

I just bought The 400 Blows at Barnes & Noble for $24, because of their 20% off sticker and my membership discount. That does not blow at all, my friends.

I've noticed the 20% off sticker on all of the Criterion new releases there lately. It would be nice if this were an ongoing policy.

I've wanted to upgrade my old DVD of The 400 Blows since I bought a Blu-ray player, but I held off because of the bad packaging of the first release. It's an important slice of the Criterion pie, though, and I'm happy to have the Blu-ray at last.

Also, I never said I wanted a free replacement case. All I'm saying is that now that they're repackaging it, it would be nice for them to start offering a replacement case program.
this. just as they sell, and sold, replacement cases for several titles, it would be great if they simply offered the option. it is win/win as i see it, as some of the replacement cases they offered sold out. the customer gets what they want and criterion is further supported.

I actually ordered it from family video, couldn't pass it up at that price. When the package arrived I expected the worst. No padding what's so ever and it came in a thin cardboard envelope. Fortunatley, there was no damage to my package. I seriously don't know how it wasnt crushed being shipped like that.

So, mrjohnnyb, your little post sure cost me! I have wondered for years why there wasn't more Herzog on blu, especially the very films in this set. This collection hit me in a hard-to-find vulnerable spot. Ugh!

Selling my Herzog/Kinski DVD set and a couple of the other movies that have on DVD will get me down well under $100, which is a major bargain for cinema in the collection. Actually, I think the list price is a major bargain for these films. What a fantastic release. I wonder if anything from Criterion this year will rival my excitement with this.

Must find 150 dollars. This set looks wonderful. If I can get this and an american lynch set someday, I'm one happy blu ray collector.

But yeah thats how id display the Zatochi set, the artwork is beautiful - although at first I always thought it the stickers on the plastic rap were part of the actual box, which I liked lol. I can see why people displace it as its not the conventional Criterion Packaging, but its such a beautiful set
I have thought about separating the DVDs and Blus. I guess it does look a little strange with them all bunched together because of the different heights. I change the way I group them every now and then because I'm never 100% satisfied with how my collection is organized for some reason. Although, I will stick with how I display the Zatoichi set because it is always a great talking point when I have company.

I'm looking forward to watching #9 (Adventures of Zatoichi) tonight. Also, I'm thinking of watching Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion on DVD later this week. I watched it on Blu for the first time a few weeks ago. I'm curious about what differences in picture and audio quality I will see and hear on my 42 inch Plasma. Also, I just want to make sure that the DVDs are in good working order just in case someone wants to borrow them.

I don't really find it fair to spend $35 for a replacement case due to Criterion's poor DigiPaking abilities when TNOTH first came out.
I wouldn't expect a response...I think he pretty much stopped responding to packaging complaints. Hey, I'm OCD too, but its unrealistic for them to provide alternatives to every digipak release because some don't like them. Especially one that old and with a re-issue. I have the 1st edition of TNOTH, and its fine other than offset printing of the title on the spine. Condition-wise, it is fine. I not sure why you say they are all bad, unless that is what you mean.

I think the original The 400 Blows-style digipaks were a different situation because they were truly horribly designed. The new digipaks are very well designed, its just that people don't take care of them or they are damaged in shipping. This is not directed at you, but if that later is the case, people should not except them and return them until they get a good copy instead of complaining about digipaks in general. Or do what I do, never order them through the mail and buy them in stores where can carefully inspect them.

I once had to order a vinyl record from Amazon, because I couldn't find it in any store, and they had to send to something like three or four copies until I was satisfied with the condition.

Same here, was curious to why all were bad? Nothing wrong with mine that Im aware of. Personally, I don't like the switch to the digipacks, I liked the uniformity of my Criterion section in my collection. The occasional box set or digipack I would display on the top of my shelves. Now I will have to change how I display these, but whatever. Not going to complain about it or stop buying them.

Seems I had more LDs and tapes than I thought, a few dozen of each, but mostly just rented them. Really spent most of my time back then accumulating CDs, added some vinyl items that never quite made it to CD. And still have most all of my original vinyl from before CDs. (Mostly done accumulating music, some few exceptions here and there, have a lot still haven't got around to, and it's not getting any younger. (Me neither. ))

Didn't mean to send you to the poor house on this purchase, but I am heading there myself. The first 100 copies were signed by Herzog himself, but they sold out fast. Also, when this pre-order posted, the price was $111.99. Within a few hours, it jumped to $149.99. With a limit of 5,000 copies and the product not releasing until July, I "dropped the gauntlet" and "sealed my fate" by making the purchase through Amazon. I just found out that you can purchase it directly through Shout Factory for $139.99. Oh, well!

Exactly! I order from UK through Amazon and only buy BRAND NEW, if any come with any damage I complain and get full refund or replacement, I am buying a brand new item, it shouldn't come damaged or looking second hand - even if its a problem during transit.

They should package them better then them simple card cases or bin bag style sleeves haha

But yeah, I will never accept a poor condition Criterion, they deserve to be kept best quality possible, and for the price for some of them, there is NO excuse.

Looks like I'm done with Family Video. Persona shipped on 3/21 and is still missing in action. I've emailed them requesting a full refund.

I am curious, how much were they asking for? At Barnes and Nobles, I paid 31 including tax on release day.

I would not have the patience to wait for this film through the mail, being my favorite Bergman film.

I watched Persona last night and was overwhelmed by the film. Talk about a movie that BEGS multiple viewings. What stood out for me was, of course, the cinematography. Damn, Sven Nykvist is one of the greatest cinematographers to ever grace celluloid.

Dat scene where Liv enters the room when Bibi is sleeping doe... So beautiful and haunting.

One thing that was missing from the movie is the step to all out lesbianism, preferably hardcore. LOL, J/K..... Not.
