It's on Criterions HULU channel

Thanks!

I just watched The Wild Bunch last week and I was very underwhelmed. I liked the start and the ending, but I found the middle to drag on.

As for Unforgiven. I haven't seen it in many years, but I recall not being incredibly impressed by it. I was still rather new to the western genre then, so perhaps a rewatch would benefit me.

I'm just happy we have It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books on blu ray. That movie has helped me fall asleep so many times. And I don't mean that as an insult, honestly.

04. The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966)

08. For A Few Dollars More (1965)
09. High Plains Drifter (1973)
10. High Noon (1952)
That is a great top ten. I love all of those westerns. I would only move Once Upon a Time in the West to the number 1 spot. That is my favorite Sergio Leone film and my favorite performance by Henry Fonda. I'm usually not a fan of Fonda, but I liked to see him play against type in OUATIM. I just upgraded my DVD to blu recently, so I look forward to being able to watch it in HD soon.

I hope that Criterion will release McCabe and Mrs. Miller. It is the only Altman film so far other than M.A.S.H. that I have liked overall. My first viewings of Nashville and Short Cuts were disappointing. Maybe I should give them another try.

Also, am I the only one that is really curious abot how the Red River packaging will look? I wonder if it will be really chunky like The Complete Mr. Arkadin because of the book.

For Billy Wilder fans:

Kino will be releasing two of his films this summer.

Witness for the Prosecution
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes

WFTP is excellent. Holmes is good although a bit predictable.

Good to see that others do this, though my group is a little different as we are online and from all over the world. It is very rewarding to watch in a group then discuss afterwards We have been going 147 weeks now so we are doing something right

I am slowly making my way through The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes - http://www.wordsworth-editions.com/c...herlock-Holmes and found the above film to be a welcomed addition. I've also watched The Hounds of the Baskervilles, Holmes will forever be Peter Cushing.

As for WFTP

No idea who has the rights to it or would allow Criterion to do so, however they have release several of Mamet's other films on DVD (Homicide and House of Games) so I guess it is a possibility.

I believe that like Sophie's Choice, Shout Factory have the rights for Glengarry Glen Ross through their deal with ITV.

Solid list! If I had to rank my favorite Westerns, it'd be something like...

1. The Wild Bunch
2. Once Upon a Time in the West
3. The Searchers
4. McCabe & Mrs. Miller
5. Rio Bravo
6. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
7. My Darling Clementine
8. The Long Riders
9. Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
10. Unforgiven

In keeping my post Criterion-related, I've inquired multiple times about my hoping that they'd acquire #4, #7, and #9.

Woot! I am so up for WFTP. I was hoping it would be a Criterion with lots of extras, but I'll take the Kino (at least it's not Twilight Time). Day one!

Thank you! Prior to seeing Giant a couple of weeks ago, it certainly was my favorite western. It's a very consistent film and there is never a dull moment. The performances are absolutely stellar, as is the story.

The first time I saw Once Upon A Time In The West was on Blu-ray several weeks ago, almost immediately after seeing The Man With No Name Trilogy. The Blu-ray quality looked pretty good, although I'm sure that there's always room for improvements, as Paramount / Warner Bros. can be lazy with their releases.

RE: Robert Altman - I would love to see Criterion give McCabe and Mrs. Miller the treatment. I still have my Blu-ray of The Player to watch, my DVD of Short Cuts to watch, as well as The Company on my DVR.

RE: Red River - It's the one release I'm probably looking forward to the most this year other than L'Eclisse (thus far).

I just watched Witness For The Prosecution two days ago via an older DVR recording that I had of it. All I can say is that it is my favorite courtroom drama next to 12 Angry Men. What a phenomenal film! It leaves you on the edge until the credits roll.

I'll gladly pick it up on Blu-ray. Great news.

I used to own The Long Riders on Blu-ray, but I remember selling it off without seeing it beforehand. I search the TV Guide constantly for it, but to no luck.

I do see My Darling Clementine and Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid listed from time to time, so I will record them. I noticed that My Darling Clementine is in Roger Ebert's Great Movies list so that's something that makes me intrigued.

Hearing all of the positive comments on Shane really inclines me to see it sooner rather than later. I think I'll find some room to watch it today.

I used to see The Long Riders periodically on the Encore movie channels. But you're right, I haven't seen it listed lately. Loved the casting of the brothers Carradine, Keach, Quaid, and Guest as the James-Younger gang brothers - without that casting, I don't think the film is anywhere near as successful. I really enjoyed Walter Hill's films from that late 70s/early 80s era (Hard Times, The Driver, The Warriors, The Long Riders, Southern Comfort, 48 Hrs., and Streets of Fire).

On Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, be sure you catch the 1988 Turner Preview version - as with most of Peckinpah's films, the studio massacred the film for its original theatrical release. It's not a perfect film by far, but it's always fascinated me. Then again, Peckinpah's a favorite of mine.

I got into the western vibe again after watching Gunfight at the O.K. Corral last week. I'm enjoying going through these, but I'm spacing them apart somewhat.

My favorite Western? That's a tough call.
It's tough to choose between Stagecoach, Rio Bravo, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Pursued is kind of a "western-noir", so you might be into it. And +1 on Johnny Guitar.

My most anticipated western on blu-ray is The Naked Spur

Some others that haven't been mentioned that would be great releases:
Ride the High Country
The Big Sky
The Far Country
Bend of the River
Tall in the Saddle

Man From Laramie is being released by Twilight Time and is worth picking up. God, a Criterion box set of all the Anthony Mann/Jimmy Stewart westerns would have been awesome.

Oh, another favorite of mine is Destry Rides Again. Fantastic!

I wish Warner would put this out on blu-ray. Their DVD release including the 1988 Turner preview version and the 2005 "special edition" was great, but I'm hoping that they don't only give the SE a remastering and relegate the (superior) Turner version as a standard def extra.

Agreed. I just edited my post to clarify I meant the Turner Preview version. That DVD set is a great release.

On the subject of westerns and Criterion movies, I remember buying a DVD of Lonely are the Brave, starring Kirk Douglas, around the same time that I bought the old Criterion DVD of Ace in the Hole many years ago. Those always made for a great double-feature night.

I wish that Lonely are the Brave would be released on Blu-ray now that Ace in the Hole is being upgraded.
