There were a few mandatory channels I had to have when I finally switched over (from big dish) to small dish. TCM was always one of them, though I never really watched it much prior to having a dvr and it finally going "hd". Now it's about half of what I watch on tv.

I have a hard time believing that there is one person out there who doesn't enjoy 12 Angry Men.

My girlfriend doesn't typically enjoy "oldies" but even she loved 12 Angry Men.

A movie that I dislike -- 12 Angry Men
2/10
Author: Jonathan Kwok from Hong Kong
24 January 2008

The main reason that I dislike this movie because it is played in black and white. It made feel tired, so I cannot concentrate in the movie.

Another point is that it did not change much scene, they mainly acted in the jury room. They stayed in there for most of the time that made me feel uncomfortable and closely packed together.

After that, I think they had talked to much about the case and they waste so much in talking the same thing.

All in all, I don't like this movie because it is black and white and it seems to be that they were repeating the same point again and again. Therefore I don't like this movie at all.

Default Lola (1961)

Just finished watching my second Jacques Demy film, Lola. I wish I had seen Lola before The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, because in many ways Umbrellas is a sequel to Lola. I didn't know that before I began to watch Lola last night.

Well, I agree with critics that say Lola is a musical without music. Actually, music is used sparingly and very well. One of my favorite pieces of music (Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92) pops up during a few key moments in the film. Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 also brings up supressed memories of watching Irreversible, since it was used in that film as well. I don't think I will ever fully recover from watching Irreversible.

I enjoyed Lola and look forward to eventually watching the other 4 films in the upcoming Essential Jacques Demy set. I think I am most curious about Donkey Skin out of the remaining films I haven't seen in that set.

It says in the review for the Arrow disc of Sisters (1973) that the master was prepared by Criterion. I'm going to guess that it's not a master from 2000 (which is when they put out the dvd), so hopefully Criterion will be upgrading this title soon.

I absolutely loved Lola. It was as good as The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, in my opinion.

That being said, I, too, am looking forward to the Demy set. I have a feeling that it is going to be one of the nicest releases by Criterion, especially this year.

Out of the four that I haven't seen, the one that I'm looking forward to the most is Bay of Angels.

My lastest Criterion order from DVD Planet order has arrived.

Posted 29 April (what a great day)
Arrived in Montreal 6 May

All discs in perfect condition, though none are Digipaks. Came in a small box with those little air bags as a cushion.

[Show spoiler]"And let's talk about the ending, you don't even get any closure, you don't even get to know if the boy was the murderer for real! Then what's the point of the whole MOVIE? Where you're trying to find out if he did it or not."

Hilarious!

The answer is anyone's guess but from their track record if you're waiting for them to release something that's on there you could potentially be waiting a very long time. I would recommend the Australian release to "hold you over", although it's pretty great itself.

I am leaning toward yes, but nothing is definitive.

I can see The Brood coming before the end of the year, as Scanners was announced recently.

If you want to see it, it's always on the television. Just search your TV guide.

I am planning on rewatching all of those in the near future, but I don't see myself enjoying many of them on a rewatch.

8 1/2 and Wings of Desire, yes. However, I'm not a big fan of the cult films (see Brazil / Fear and Loathing) or the monstery / horror films (Island of Lost Souls).
