I would do the free trial for 7 days and watch the film that way. You can cancel before the 7 days are up. I'm doing Hulu this month, but don't think that I'll do it beyond this month. For English language films, there are no subtitles (for the CC stuff, anyway.) I started watching Orson Welles' The Immortal Story w/ Jeanne Moreau and had to stop it 25 min in when I realized I didn't understand half of what was being said. And, for whatever reason, the HD stream of The Great Beauty appeared with a lot of the blacks crushed out. I'm content to just get me fix from the library at 2 titles per week at a time (that's what I am limited to.) Also, beyond the CC films, it seems that Hulu has next to nothing of any interest. My wife likes *some of the CC stuff, but it's nice to catch some of the mainstream films once in a while and Netflix seems to have more in that regard. |

![]() Next up for me: A Woman Under the Influence. I DVRed it on TCM some weeks ago. It will be my first Cassavetes. Although, I did see a few minutes of Faces and was intrigued. I have been hearing great things about the Cassavetes set, so I'm looking forward to digging into his films. Also, I'm really looking forward to the next B&N 50% off sale in July. The Demy set looks like it will be a great Criterion title, so it would be great to pick up at that time. If I like the Cassavetes' films that I see between now and then, then I will try to get that set also. I wouldn't mind picking up some digipaks (Repo Man, Il Sorpasso, A Hard Days Night), so I can get them in better shape. Although, the few digipaks I have only have slight wear around the corners. I will more than likely watch Ace in the Hole tonight and order a replacement from Amazon. They usually arrive with just a little shelf ware look around the corners, but this one arrived differently. ![]() |

I'm not going to look. Ignorance is bliss. I have Ace in the Hole reserved for pickup at Barnes & Noble on the way home from work. |

hmm.. that's pretty unfortunate. The Immortal Story was rich in atmosphere and was fairly enjoyable. it's only like 65 minutes long and sometimes I'm looking for stuff about that long. was excited to see that Jeanne Moreau was in it. well... maybe one day it'll see the light of day with some subtitles.

Outstanding...
![]() On a sunny holiday morning, a quietly withdrawn law student, Roberto, is jarred out of his comfort zone by a happenstance meeting with Bruno, a middle-aged man in a sporty Lancia Aurelia convertible, and reluctantly taken along on a road trip adventure through the Italian countryside. When I sat down last night to watch Dino Risi's 1962 film, Il Sorpasso, I was in a tired frame of mind, and had only expected to make it through the first hour before going to sleep. Like the baffled Roberto, though, I was swept away before I had a chance to register my surprise, and I ended up staying wide awake not only to watch the movie, but all of the supplements on this Criterion Blu-ray. Casual viewers shall consider this to be a fair warning. Once you step into the passenger seat, Il Sorpasso will drive you wherever it wants to drive you, and the ride does not stop until the film is over. In my offline life, I have always been an introvert to an extreme degree. Jean-Louis Trintignant's Roberto reminds me more of myself than any movie character in recent memory, and I found myself smiling during each of his bewildered voiceovers. Vittorio Gassman's Bruno, on the other hand, is the perfect epitome of all of the endearingly obnoxious extrovert friends that have dragged me out to crowded gatherings over the years when I would have been content to stay at home with a book or a movie. Il Sorpasso speaks to all of us who have felt uneasy, but exhilarated, in situations outside of our control or who have felt mildly disappointed when our more outgoing friends express surprise if we want to leave a party earlier than they do. Il Sorpasso may be titled after the act of passing one car after another on an Italian highway, but this is a movie that shows its love of people during every moment. I enjoyed checking out the background extras during any given scene, because each person seems to flourish within the frame by focusing on agendas unrelated to the principle plot at hand. After the comparably somber Italian neorealist movies, Risi's Il Sorpasso, like its early 1960s contemporaries directed by Fellini or Antonioni, achieves an impressive balance between the flashy euphoria of economic recovery and the imminent descent out of the clouds when the bubble starts to burst. Il Sorpasso is a beautiful black-and-white movie that is presented exquisitely on this Criterion Blu-ray. Cityscapes and rural scenarios are alive with detail, while the music and automobile horns have a tangible immediacy. This release is graced with some of the best supplements that I have seen in a while, and I recommend that other first-time viewers take a look through each one to further understand this movie's place in 1960s Italy and its influence on subsequent iconic films. Woo hoo!
Double Indemnity will be shown on the big screen at Fox Theatre here in Atlanta in August. Here's the Fox Theatre Summer Film Festival Schedule. I'm all over the Double Indemnity showing, and I also plan to attend Gone with the Wind. They do not specify which King Kong version is showing, but I'd love to catch the 1933 one again. |

And frankly, does ANYONE ever show the '05 Peter Jackson one again? Except for Universal still trying to flog the thing for a studio icon, amazing how quickly that one fell off the building, faster than you can say "the Desolation of Smaug".
