New here.

I have to ask. I grab at any opportunity to reduce the cost of Criterion movies and keep reading about a B&N $8 coupon. What is that?

I haven't had a US snail flyer from B&N in forever nor have I got any email discounts from them.

I think I saw some notes about another flash sale. When was the last one? I spent a bit in Feb. and am in fear that I missed another.

Thanks.

Criterion will have a flash sale sometime in September/October as tradition dictates. Barnes and Noble will have a 50% sale July 8th

Thanks! I'm sure I will. It's not a film I plan on rewatching a lot, but it deeply troubled and moved me. The transfer was amazing, the list of extras is very intriguing to me, and it does have gorgeous packaging.

Thanks. I didn't miss the flash sale. So I didn't miss the opportunity to get more films but I also didn't miss the spending of more money. Double-edged sword.

Thankfully I recorded it off TCM and didn't spend money on it. I'm struggling to make it through to the end, hopefully I can finish up the last little bit tomorrow after work.

And for anyone who is wondering why I hated it, the character of Andre is the most boring, "Searching for meaning" character I've ever seen. I imagine him as the type of character that thinks everything has a deeper meaning and nothing can be taken at face value. If there were an art gallery opening, he would be there to lecture the first time goers about how you have to look beyond the strokes that were painted into the strokes that weren't painted; and how the use of light colors shows the artists inner melon-collie etc. IE you'd smack him if you were there.
Thanks. I also watched it courtesy of TCM and couldn't wait for it to end. That guy droned on and on and on. Sheesh! Shut up already! Whenever I hear someone getting "all deep" I think of Annie Hall and the movie theater lobby scene where Woody deflates the windbag.
Somehow I managed to avoid MDWA when it first came out when it was one of those "Oh, you've got to see this movie" topics on all the talk shows.
Honestly, the only time I'd want to have dinner with this guy is if I was awaiting execution and this was my last meal. The guards would all fall asleep and I could escape or he'd never shut up and I'd die of old age.

Here are the titles listed by "most popular" per Amazon.

Fear and Loathing I don't think would be it since it was available as a cheaper Non Criterion

Not counting Benjamin Button of course since I think it was available for $5-10 a lot even in it's Criterion stage.

As best as I can filter the collection here
Benjamin Button is in 6900 collections -- I think that's just the Criterion releae
Thin Red Line narrowly edges Seven Sam both in 3800 collections.

The Game is in a little over 3100.
12 Angry Men 2700
Paths of Glory 2600+
Rosemarys Baby 2580
Seventh Seal 2550
Rushmore 2500
Royal Tenn 2400 +
Godzilla 2400+
Here are the top titles going by Criterion.com user collections:

As of 4/22

The Royal Tenenbaums 6,582
Seven Samurai 6,326
Brazil 5,295
Rushmore 5,293
8 1/2 5,097
The Seventh Seal 4,581
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 4,566
The Thin Red Line 4,477
Days of Heaven 4,186
Videodrome 4,109

Finally watched The Music Room today. The longest sitting unwatched Criterion film in my collection. I had originally tried it sometime last July, but I recall being overtired and unable to give it the proper attention, thus checking out around the 30 minute mark. Today, the film absolutely floored me. It's so beautiful and harrowing, unlike many other works I've ever seen. There's a Ray retrospective happening here in July, so I'm going to try to see the restored Apu trilogy and maybe a few others.

I'm watching Crumb right now (2/3 done) and I am not a fan of it. I think the cartoon aspect of it is cool. but a lot of my dislike for the film has to do with Robert Crumb, himself. I think the guy is a complete ******* who consists of nothing more than self-righteousness and degradation, yet with the ability to draw. He acts as if he's the norm and the rest of the world are the odd ones.

I found it/him pretty unpleasant/repellent as well.

I'm all for creativity and expressing oneself through various outlets, but this guy is the extreme. I'm not condemning him from seeing the world differently than other people, but he needs to put a filter on it.

EDIT: By the end of the film, I wondered who was worse - Robert or his family.

Pretty horrible childhood for all the boys (don't know about his sisters since they wouldn't participate in the film) and considering how his brothers turned out I guess he's the most normal of the group. I guess if you grew up in a family like that your idea of normal would be skewed anyway. Maybe because I knew his Underground Comix work long before I saw this I knew what some of his tendencies were-such as a fixation on domineering, big-legged women so some of the stuff was expected but his home life growing up and family were a shock.

At least one positive thing after watching:

"Gee, my childhood/family was not so bad after all."

I DVRed Crumb a few months ago and got maybe a half hour, forty minutes before deciding to put it on my gohastings list.

The guy was an important, influential figure during a very interesting era and he's a good interview.

You could stop right there and have all the fixings for a good documentary but throw in all the various third-party reactions and evaluations and rationalizations and condemnations and you've got a very good documentary on your hand.

Yeah, I was familiar with a lot of his stuff growing up too (though believe it or not I had no idea he was the Keep on Truckin' guy until I saw Crumb) and that probably makes a big difference.

I guess my reaction is different, having not grown up with any of his work.

Off-topic, but if anyone has the "Movies! Network" on their television, they will be showing La Dolce Vita tomorrow morning.

I still have my collection of Underground Comix. Interesting time capsules from that era.

I recall reading in an interview with someone from Criterion that FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS was their best selling DVD. It was one of their only releases to get into Walmarts.

In my opinion, its pretty ugly. Having said that, I would buy the disc even if it came in a paper bag.

Anyone have an idea if the 3 disc cases will be offered as separates? Would love to replace Seven Samurai and Fantastic Mr Fox.
