If this is your attitude, you are going to miss out on a lot of legitimately classic films, such as Repulsion, that have just as much artistic merit as films from any other genre.
Sorry to offend you, but an individuals taste in movies is no reason to get so upset. I knew Rosemary's Baby was a horror movie going in a still watched it because of what high praise it had, and Polanski was the director. I enjoyed his direction I just thought the movie was a bit ridiculous and annoying. I mean come on you're pregnant and you're losing weight, are you really that stupid... I do not know maybe I am too close minded but I am very happy watching the movies that I enjoy watching and rather not waste my time with movies that I do not enjoy the plot no matter how amazing or classic it is.

One of the things that I really enjoy about Rosemary's Baby is that it puts a supernatural horror spin on the real-life apprehension that pregnant women must feel when they are unsure about who to trust in terms of advice about nutrition and health. Right now, in 2014, when we are besieged by medical websites like Web MD or Mayo Clinic that inadvertently cater to paranoid hypochondria, and when anti-vaccination mentalities and new age junk science outlets run amok, this aspect of Rosemary's Baby is probably even more unsettling than it was the movie was released.

Rosemary is not stupid. She is just a normal woman who is dealing with conflicting advice from everyone around her. That's what makes this a great movie that everyone on Earth can relate to.

Some are on Criterion's Hulu channel now, too, so they may eventually make it on to some type of disc format in the future. Here's the list of Tartan UK DVDs that have yet to get a blu-ray release as far as I know...
  • Eve (written by Bergman)
  • Music In Darkness
  • Prison
  • Waiting Women (aka Secrets Of Women)
  • A Lesson In Love
  • The Devil's Eye
  • All These Women
  • The Rite
  • From The Life Of The Marionettes
  • After The Rehearsal
  • Saraband (also available on DVD in the U.S. from Sony)

I think that's it, but as you can see there are quite a few of the films that, as far as I know, never got a DVD release in the U.S.
Thanks for the info. I may look into them holding me over until any blu releases if at all. On dvd is better than not available at all.

I usually go through all of the extras on a Blu-ray after my first viewing. I'll usually surf my laptop while the commonplace back-slapping making-of featurettes are playing on the disc, but I usually watch the Criterion supplements with undivided attention.

I generally love the Criterion extras, except that I sometimes skip through the foreign talk-show intereviews with actors or directors.

I wish I had the time to do that. Or at least the time management/multi-tasking skills (which I like to think I have a decent handle on) for it.

I've hardly watched any supplements aside from the Bergman (Autumn Sonata making of for example) and Kurosawa blus and a few scattered other non-Criterion titles. I barely have the time to devote to a movie in one night having to break it up over two/three nights.

Oops, sorry. It was right at the end of September when the sale happened. My ordered shipped 1 October and that's what has confused me.

Yes, all BLU rays in stock in stores are on sale 40% off. (Online not all titles are part of the sale - at least non-Criterion titles)

Thanks! My local B&N doesn't stock movies, but I'll be traveling past another location this week. I want to stop and pick up L'eclisse, one of my most anticipated titles of the year so far!

Same here - it's not how I'd prefer it but with a busy home life its either do that or watch nothing. However, Criterion disks are the only ones I do go through all of the extras - commentaries and all. It's always worth while and for some directors - Godard, I'm looking at you - I find the extras greatly enhance my understanding and appreciation of the film.

On another note, I just learnt I have to go to San Diego on business the week after next so will take this opportunity to bag some Criterions with free shipping and no worries about import duties

Probably going to go for:

Life Aquatic
Red River
Ace in the Hole

Deep Discount seems to be the best deal for this.

Did anyone notice that the Zatoichi set is effectively half price because of their big sale? Seriously tempted...

Wow! Surprised to see that...

1) many of you don't watch the supplements or don't watch many of them.

I don't watch many of them either. I usually have the intent to watch some of them, but don't often get around to it. In most cases, after spending 2 hours or so with a film, even if it was a good one, the last thing I want to do is watch featurettes, making of's, discussions w/ cinematographers, etc.

also surprised that 2) some of you allude to having to scrap and claw to find some time to actually enjoy a movie.. again - same here!! if I see 2 - 3 movies in a week, than I am pleased.

my wife and I have watched a few "epic" length films over the past few weeks and have split them up into 2 days - like Tin Drum mentioned.

Like I said, it's based on a very small sample size. So it could just be I wasn't a fan of the films I watched and not Japanese cinema as a whole. I'm willing to watch more to see which if that is the case or not.

Default Barnes and Noble sale

So with the 40% off sale at Barnes and Noble, I'm mighty tempted to buy a few Criterions; Riffifi and Persona especially.

However -- are they FOR SURE still having their 50% off Criterion sale this July? I've heard rumours and such, but nothing confirmed. If they are, I'll wait -- but if they're not doing that until October or November, then I'll just buy a couple Criterions now.

Anyone have any info on this? I'd hate to spend 25 bucks this week when I can wait 2 more weeks and only spend 20...

Is this the first time this has occurred- Criterion advertising a number of discs and then the actual package having more? I can't seem to think of another instance.

Do yourself a favor then, call up that location's DVD/music dept and if they have it in stock ask them to please put it on hold for you. They will hold for 3 days. Esp in case somone beats you to what titles you are after.

Everyone is entitled to their perspective on film, absolutely. Perhaps I just took your post the wrong way, but it just seemed prejudice towards the horror genre which is not fair. I mean, I don't particularly care for romantic comedies, for example, but every once in a while there is one that actually stands as a great film.

I apologize as I did not mean to come off as strongly as I did. I can't hate someone that has an avatar of coke-era Scorsese :-)

Not a problem, I understand. That is why I gave Rosemary's Baby a shot, but unfortunately it just reaffirmed my quandary with the horror genre. And thank you for the complement on the avatar, Scorsese is the man.

I don't really like horror movies, but I love Rosemary's Baby. Gold standard for the genre.

I think its more the fact its not IN YOU FACE horror and the way
[Show spoiler]we never see the babies eyes at end and left to our imagination makes it more scary, like Blaire Witch, we never see ANYTHING and its left to us to imagine it. Not seen in a while but the worse we see is her dream and even then we have to question, like her... was it a dream or was it real? Until the film concludes etc
