I haven't purchased a Criterion title since the last sale. So, this will be one gigantic haul. I don't end up making lists when these things happen. I just go in, get one of those baskets, and just grab every title I want. Oh, my wallet will be hurting. But I look forward to it.

I always put the iPhone away and turn off all of the lights in my apartment when I'm watching a movie, especially if I'm seeing a movie for the first time. After the movie is over, though, I like to play it again with the commentary track as background noise while I surf the web with my laptop.

Bergman movies are quite demanding when it comes to giving one's full attention to the screen. I've never seen one of his films in a theater, but I'd love to.

I'll never understand how some people can watch a film and post here at the same time.

Other Criterion fans may find this of interest...

Right now, I'm reading Caligari's Children: The Film As Tale Of Terror by S. S. Prawer after finding a used hardcover for a whopping two dollars on Amazon.

Caligari's Children discusses horror cinema up to 1980 and how the movies were influenced from previous "media" incarnations (novels, 19th century theatrical plays, 19th century theater light-and-effects shows, etc.).

I'm only on the first section, but here are the Criterion films that have been mentioned so far...

Vampyr
Eyes Without a Face
The Uninvited
Rosemary's Baby
Kwaidan
Onibaba
Island of Lost Souls
Wild Strawberries
The Seventh Seal
Persona
Godzilla
The Phantom Carriage

The discussion of the fantastical imagery of the Bergman films was a surprise at first, but I like how the author incorporates the films into the theme. Persona is described as a vampire film of sorts, and I like that idea.

I have to have complete darkness and quiet. I can listen to music and do other things but with films and TV shows they get my complete attention.

Me either. My sister does it (not on this site) and I just ignore her and lose myself in the film. Then either in the middle of the film or at the end, she then asks me what the film was about. I ignore her again too.

Spent my morning with Hearts and Minds. I can see this being one that many people won't want to watch more than once. It's really a grim experience. That being said, it should be required viewing, especially for those who weren't old enough/born during the time of the Vietnam war (like myself). It's educational, but never dry, and presents the material in a very blunt fashion.

why would you need an HDMI cable to have your computer open and be accessing the net?

I could never pull the trigger on that set (even when in print) for the price, just to get dvds i'd be waiting to get upgraded. I was, however, happy to pick up the book a few weeks ago when i found someone selling an unopened copy on Amazon for $20.

Ah that's fair enough, was a huge price for DVDs but it's an awesome set, and glad I have in collection.

That's a good answer, you actually value your movies at a high level. If you ever would want to post pictures of your collection, I would really be interested to see it.

Thanks - Films are my favourite thing and the amount of work gone into Criterion releases is mind blowing and they deserve so much respect.

I posted a pic recently, but got loads on way in post so will update soon .

I sprang on it at a good price, and I'm swapping any Kurosawa blu-ray upgrades into the dvd cases. I love it. The set itself will never grow old. Although I do have an awkward place to the right of the set on my shelf for Dersu Uzala, The Quiet Duel, Criterion Ran, Rhapsody in August and Dreams. No good way to make that work.

I recommend that movie to so many people, I should just get one of those sandwich board signs that says "Watch Rififi - You'll like it!"
