I have a $50 B&N gift card that I really should use on college books...but I think a couple of Criterions sound like a better investment.

I'm pretty sure that Seven Samurai will be one of the titles I get during the sale. Probably A Hard Day's Night too.

(Bravo on the list of noir)

I just watched both of these in the past couple of weeks. I had seen Scarlet Street before, but I was surprised to find that I enjoyed The Woman in the Window a little more. Edward G. Robinson seems a little too naive in Scarlet Street. They would make a great double feature.

Great list! I've seen a lot of it, though I'm missing a few. I hope that list all finds its way to Blu Ray in the not too distant future.

You missed one of my favourites though, Where the Sidewalk Ends.

Whenever I hear fans of films say they "hate" a film, it makes me feel bad.

I don't know, Red River is great but Ace in the Hole.

I think it comes down to which genre you prefer, classic western or Billy Wilder at his blackest.

I'll always go with Wilder, but there isn't a wrong choice.

Lots of great noir titles mentioned. I also prefer THE BIG SLEEP over THE MALTESE FALCON, and much as I love the 1941 MALTESE FALCON, I like the 1931 original at least as much if not more for its heavy pre-Code attitude and equally great character actors. The script is almost identical but it's played as a pre-Code crime comedy-drama rather than a noir thriller, and both films gain from watching them back to back. (I even enjoy the kooky 1936 screwball comedy remake retitled SATAN MET A LADY).

As noted by others, OUT OF THE PAST is a necessity (sadly not currently on Blu-ray) and DOUBLE INDEMNITY is pretty much THE archetypal noir, and the new Blu-ray is simply outstanding. LADY FROM SHANGHAI also looks spectacular (and I just have the first Blu-ray pressing so far). A couple of other memorable Columbia noirs unfortunate not (yet) on Blu-ray are GILDA and AFFAIR IN TRINIDAD, both of which look pretty darn good on DVD upscaled on a big screen. Just for fun, don't miss HIS KIND OF WOMAN, a hugely enjoyable noir that turns to dark comedy and outrageously melodramatic satire of noir thrillers (though also not on Blu-ray).

As for foreign noirs, many of the French New Wave pictures are noirish or noir homages if not outright noirs, and a few could probably be classified as noir. There are also quite a few Brit-noir films from the 1940s through the 1970s. And I will reinforce the love for the brilliant stream of Japa-noir films of the late 1950s and 60s. Criterion's Nikkatsu Noir Eclipse set is a must-have, as are PALE FLOWER, TOKYO DRIFTER, and BRANDED TO KILL, among others. Then there's a fantastic Korean noir in the 1960 version of THE HOUSEMAID, on Criterion's World Cinema box set volume 1.

Mulholland Drive

Time Bandits

La Dolce Vita

all coming to Criterion, according to moviefanfare.com

Quote:
Criterion Corner: Those folks at Criterion are up to their old tricks, pushing out gems on DVD and Blu-ray that collectors simply can’t live without. Down the road, we’ve learned that the company has slated David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr., the 2001 Hollywood-set mystery that actually started life as a pilot for a TV series. The film deals with an aspiring actress, an amnesiac woman, a film director, and a lesbian liaison and stars Naomi Watts, Laura Elena Harring, Robert Forster and Justin Theroux. This will be a nice companion piece to Criterion’s upcoming Eraserhead. Also due from the company is Terry Gilliam’s fantasy Time Bandits, available in a mega-deluxe edition. Just licensed for future release is Federico Fellini’s 1960 masterpiece La Dolce Vita with Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg. This will make a nice companion with The Great Beauty, the recent Oscar winner inspired by La Dolce Vita

Awesome announcement. I will happily trade my Studio Canal MD for a Criterion. LDV is great and long rumored news, but for me the coup is Criterion going back to the well on the long out of print Time Bandits. This could be great news for new versions of the other Handmade Films. My Criterion DVD will happily be retired.

All great titles for inclusion in the Collection. After the much-belated entry of Lynch into the Collection (with Eraserhead), Mulholland Dr. will be a great addition...and Region A desperately needs a good BD edition of Time Bandits. As a serious Terry Gilliam fan, it drives me crazy that the existing Region A release is so dreadful.

Does anyone know anything about this ever actually happening? Who currently has the rights? Its one messed up movie but there is something so enthralling about it too.

Mulholland Dr will make a lot of people happy, and we no longer have to tell folks there is nothing to suggest it is coming!

Someone start a thread.

A couple of terrific french films that I feel fit the category and were even released a few years before the Hollywood noirs are Marcel Carne's PORT OF SHADOWS and Jean Renoir's LA BETE HUMAINE.

Port of Shadows is an out of print Criterion... but looks like La Bete Humaine is still available on DVD. Upgrades of both would be most welcome

La Dolce Vita and Mulholland Drive in the same month would be great.

Here's hoping Criterion gives us another Fellini (Maybe pair LDV with La Strada), too. It's long overdue!

Can't wait for La Dolce Vita, which is probably my favourite Fellini.

Or The Voice of the Moon - surely the only Fellini film never to be released with English subtitles?

Nino Rota's score for La Dolce Vita is one of the greatest, imo.
