I want to see Mullholland Drive but I'm not buying it if it's censored. Lynch should realize that it's going to wind up on the internet regardless so he shouldn't even bother.

I'd be gutted if they did censor IF Criterion was to release - not because I want something to have fun with (im gay) but because its important to the film and the characters development (and story).

Just seems so odd O,o

Exactly. Not saying the nudity is all I want to see but if it was important to the film originally, it should not be censored. I believe films belong to the directors and I'm fine with most changes (the Scanners color timing for instance) but censorship is not one of them.

I don't understand why he would though - surely she would have had to sign stuff regarding sex/nudity - if she wasn't happy she shouldn;t have gone ahead with it, or they should have changed the scene - not censored it :/

Many actresses do if it is important to the role, even if they hate it (Scarlett Johansen, Carey Mulligan) just seems odd she went did the scene lol.

Meh

This has been the case with every non-theatrical iteration of Mulholland Dr. so if you've seen the film on DVD, Blu-ray, on television or via Netflix then you've watched the pixelated version. Lynch explained his reasoning back in 2002. http://dugpa.com/2002/12/30/archive-2002/ Excuse the caps, but it's a direct copy and paste from a chat room conversation at DavidLynch.com

DAVIDLYNCH [7:59 PM PST]: …FIRST – IF THE SHOT IS TIMED CORRECTLY YOU SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO TELL ONE BIT IF LAURA’S PUBIC HAIR HAS BEEN BLURRED – THIS PROBABLY MEANS SOME VIEWERS ARE EXPERIMENTING TO SEE LAURA’S PUBIC HAIR AND MORE ….. THIS IS WHY THE PICTURE WAS BLURRED – I PROMISED LAURA THAT I WOULD TRY TO PROTECT HER AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND TOLD HER SHE WOULD REMAIN A BEAUTIFUL SILLOUETTE AGAINST THE WARM LIGHT COMING IN THROUGH THE CURTAINS…

DAVIDLYNCH [8:02 PM PST]: …SOME PEOPLE SEE IT AS A STRANGE CENSORSHIP – IT ISN’T AND LIKE I SAID – IF YOU CAN SEE THE BLURRING THEN YOUR SET IS NOT ADJUSTED PROPERLY AND THE WHOLE FILM IS WRONG – NO PROPER MOOD

I suspect that Lynch was just being a nice guy. I've never noticed the blurring myself.

Ah fair enough - probably why I haven't noticed it, doesn't sound so bad hearing the above.

I haven't seen in a while to be honest so can't remember scene properly.

But makes more sense hearing that, just seems strange she did the scene lol - why didn't she wear something that covered it (not clothing) like those socks guys wear in films lol

Read further in link and wasn't aware it was a 2 second shot either lol

Worst censoring ever:

She was told by the director that she didn't have to worry about it. She was told she'd be protected by the lighting and that everything would be very tasteful.

And everything was fine as originally filmed and distributed. It wasn't until people started manipulating contrast and brightness of the home video images that this scene became an issue.

Throw porn sites into the mix and it's not unreasonable for directors and actors to rethink earlier decisions. At one time it was reasonable to say 'look, I know you're not comfortable with full frontal nudity but it's one fast cut during a flashback montage...nobody is going to be staring at your junk'.

But now people freeze images and manipulate images just so they can stare at junk and they can share those manipulated images with the entire world.

Ah right - fair enough.

Man people are so desperate haha - its just a human body O_o

I saw the threads when the pictures leaked from Under The Skin go Scarlett Johansen, bit creepy how people act tbh.

Okay that doesn't sound too terrible. I haven't seen it and I thought it was a giant blur placed over top of her. I get that he's trying to be respectful, but I'm still not a huge fan of him doing it.

It's hardly even noticeable. I don't even think I noticed on my initial viewing. It's certainly not something that should make one question a purchase. It has been there all along. Frankly, if Lynch thinks it should be there, then let him keep it. He is the director, after all.

it's a pretty damn hot scene regardless of what is or isn't censored.

The scene that isn't censored is even better.

I keep a note on my computer to track this. The only two I have not on your list are:

The Tenant (Polanski) - 2013 New Years Drawing
Wild Child (Truffaut) - 2014 New Years Drawing

Also, I believe the clue from the 2014 New Years Drawing that some thought to be A Raisin in the Sun is now believed to be The Big Chill. May be wrong on that, though.

The c-word isn't really appropriate here. I know people talk of self-censorship but that's kind of an oxymoron that devalues the word.

A director modifying his own work can be a lot of things but it's rarely (if ever) censorship.. And in this particular case he's really not even modifying his work...it's more like he's trying to preempt modifications.

Can't remember the specifics, but something about The Big Chill's soundtrack being a big part of Meet the Raisins.

I think Criterion has indulged a few directors lately in letting them revise aspects of their films. The 1.75 framing for Hard Day's Night and the color timing of Scanners are two recent examples that come to mind. Not to say I disagree with either of those, but it should bring up a debate about whether the director should have final say on these matters, especially years after the work was composed.

I Heard it Through the Grapevine was in The Big Chill's soundtrack and was a big part of the whole California Raisins schtick.

That said, the raisin as a clue for The Big Chill seemed a little forced. There were rumors about The Big Chill before that cartoon and it kind of reminds me of last year's 'hey the apartment building itself could be The Tenant'.
