I sure am glad that I scrounged together $2.99 to buy this perfect condition used DVD set from Movie Stop a couple of weeks ago.

As well as being a noted influence on Days Of Heaven, Christina's World is a notable plot element in the unlikeliest of films; last summer's Oblivion.

Criterion linked to this really great article on Wyeth and Malick last week.

That's why we need more Frank Tashlin on Blu-ray.

I've only seen a handful of Marcello Mastroianni films (my favorite being La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2) but I really can't imagine not liking The Organizer if you are a fan of his.

I bought this because I do love period dramas...and as I mentioned, because of the beautiful black & white cinematography which does a terrific job in invoking the look of late 19th century photographs.
I really appreciate the response. Im not really a huge fan of period dramas but I do like "true stories" I realize this might not be a 100% factual movie but i think its going to have that feel. Not sure if that makes sense. I loved Norma Rae lol Mastroianni, i think, will hold my interest even in a more serious role. Plus just checked B&N and its only $14.99 lol cant possibly go wrong.

This one looks very familiar to me, but probably not for the reason you're going for. I'm not 100% certain where I picked up a print of this, but I think it was at a garage or rummage sale ... during my "trade school/college years". I didn't have a clue who Andrew Wyeth was at the time, but I was drawn to the picture (pun partially intended). Back in those days, this picture moved with me from apartment to apartment, always finding wall space. Shame on me for not knowing its origin (back then), especially since I was a Commercial Art major during part of those post-high school years.

But for the purpose of this thread, every time I look at that picture, all I see are ... umm ... "24 hour periods of bliss".

The B&N sale has started and 4 Blurays for me:

All that Heaven allows:
love Rock Hudson, love period soap-opera melodramas, love the colors and the atmosphere of this film
Seconds: seen it once, wasn't exactly thrilled but love Rock Hudson, so..
Il Sorpasso: loved the film!!
Days of Heaven: for Terrence Mallick and for the cinematography

Saw the sale started today -picked up these:

The Game
Videodrome
Harold and Maude
If...
Diabolique
Brazil
Persona
Frances Ha
Cronos
The Wages of Fear

Harold and Maude, Cronos, If... and Wages of Fear are blind buys, but I feel pretty comfortable that I'll at least find them interesting. H & M seems like just my type of film and I love Guillermo Del Toro, Malcolm McDowell and bought Wages... on the strengt of Diabolique. For the first time in my life I'm working full time on a job with decent pay so I sort of went in on this sale. I might pick up a few more items when the next paycheck comes as well

Thank you so much for the review, Pro-B.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is such a beautiful film and Criterion's restoration looks nothing short of stunning.

I was on Amazon ordering Naked Lunch and it came up in the similar movies selection, for some reason. I read a little bit about the movie and thought it seemed interesting enough, but just didn't like it at all.

I bought it a long time ago but haven't watched because I'm afraid of how sad it's going to make me lol. I know that's a weird reason not to watch it though.

Sorry for the late response but yes, i was referring to the "must haves" or the general consensus of the best films. But im open for whatever film, as long as its a good film.

Just my 2 cents about blind buying : I very frequently blind buy and have been very rarely disappointed.

Of course, not everything (far from it) I blind buy are masterpieces I will cherish for the rest of my life, and some of them are stuff I'm having trouble going through at least once (I'm still struggling with Marketa Lazarova : after 2 trials, I haven't managed to sustain more than 40 minutes of it).

But usually, there is at least one thing that attracts me : a name, a synopsis, somebody somewhere who discussed the movie on a forum and made it looking interesting to me.
But it’s very frequent I’m close to not knowing a thing about it, which is why I’ve been buying more and more from label with a “specific” line-up. Labels like Criterion, BFI, MoC or Carlotta have created a curiosity pool for me, in which I can just swim and pick randomly things which are 85% likely to fit my tastes and interests.

My most cherish purchase so far is the Douglas Sirk Vol.1 DVD set from Carlotta. I didn’t know a thing from Sirk nor the movies from this set prior to buying them, except they were mostly “Technicolor 50s US melodramas”. And this was a 70€ ($100) blind buy !
But god, I love these movies.

So so long for disappointing blind buys.
