I completely agree. The film really reminded me a lot of Malick's Days of Heaven, with the dreamy voice over narration. I blind bought it as well, yesterday, and it was one of the best blind buys i've made so far this sale.

Watched A Hard Day's Night, and was amazed at how fantastic it looked. The restoration really paid off in spades! Watched it with the new 5.1 track, which sounded great. Hard to believe the film is 50 years old this year.

Lola Blu-ray REVIEW

It is disappointing to see that the same flawed restoration of Lola that was initially released in France also made it to the U.S.

I have yet to see Adaption. It's a film i've been meaning to watch for quite some time now. I don't mean to say that Nicolas Cage is a bad actor. He certainly has given some fine performances. There's a certain weirdness about Cage that I find very off putting.

Finally picked up The Freshman and The Great Beauty, looking forward to watching both. And although in the past I usually didnt have a problem with digipaks, I'm not loving them for the dual format editions *shrug* I'm glad theyre going back to individual cases.

Hey Pro-B! Thanks for the review! Do you think that Criterion decided to use the recently restored print from France because they believed that they couldn't make any further improvements or that the film looks as good as it ever will since the original negative was lost? I'm wondering if the film will ever be restored or modified some way in the future. I plan to buy the Demy set, but this "bad" review of Lola's video quality is causing me to have some reservations about buying it.

He thinks Nic Cage is "weird", and you want to cure that with a CHARLIE KAUFMAN movie??

(Or, is that to make Cage look rational, restrained, and charismatic by comparison?)

Actually, I may be a heretic here as I just sold Playtime to make way for the forthcoming complete Tati set from StudioCanal... it paid for 75% of it

I listed my copy of Playtime the other day. Makes no sense to hold on to it with the forthcoming Tati set.

I thought I would follow up my blind buy viewing of Louis Malle's ZAZIE DANS LE METRO with a viewing of Malle's BLACK MOON which I recorded off TCM...

Holy crap (sorry), but what in hell did I just watch?!?!

Talk about a one-two punch...I am down and out for the count, folks

I've just got M blu-ray. It comes in a clear Scanavo blu-ray case. I'm also thinking of getting the 2-disc dvd that was released in 2004 and tuck the blu-ray in it.

I'm sure you guys being Criterion fans, or Fritz Lang's, must have a copy of M (2004 dvd release). My questions are:

1. Do the dvds come in a standard or thick dvd case? With a tray to hold one of the discs or not?
2. Is the dvd case black or clear?
3. How's the PQ compared with the blu-ray? Much worse?

Thanks for your info

Can't really comment on the PQ comparison as its been a while since I've seen it, either on DVD or Blu-ray.

I think it's one of, if not THE, most underrated film in the Collection. That scene in the bathroom about halfway through—my God!

the german mediabook release of "M" has the newest restoration and the best audio for the movie.. (english friendly for the biggest part)

Catching up on top rated Criterions...

I've been collecting Criterions since the early 2000s but stopped when I bought a Blu-ray player in 2008 - and didn't start buying them again until I got a multi-region player a couple of years later, so there is a big gap in my collection!

DVD:

Erik Rohmer: Six Moral Tales
A Canterbury Tale
(actually, my favourite movie!)
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
Contempt
Amarcord

BD:

The Quatsi Trilogy
Fanny & Alexander
Rushmore / Life Aquatic
(actually only seen these on DVD but recently upgraded and haven't watched yet)
Paris, Texas
Chungking Express

My BD list will probably change a lot as I catch up

It looks like a thick grey case, isn't it? Where's the first disc kept? Under the booklet? Do you think a blu-ray disc (inside an envelope) could be tucked in this dvd case?

Btw, do you know where to buy Criterion Scanavo clear blu-ray cases?

Out of curiosity, any particular reason? It's not like there are any extras in the 2004 DVD set that aren't in the Blu-ray edition.

My copy is in a two-disc Alpha case. Second disc is against the back cover, first disc is in a hinged "middle tray". There's nothing under the booklet. You can probably fit a Blu-ray in an envelope in with the booklet, but I wouldn't swear to it.

I believe that Casetopia has them.

Look at the second photo. You can see both discs. I suppose you could tuck an envelope in there if you wanted to. You can buy cases from Criterion I believe.

Actually, I'm thinking of getting the US, Moc and German blu-rays. As for the dvds, I still watch films on dvd. Hence, the thought
