Some months are better than others and in some months it's easier to understand a 'whatayagonnado, nothing for me' reaction.

This is one of those other months where 'meh, whatever' is a little harder to relate to.

Yes, there's nothing quite like marginally improving upon a BD that's been on the shelves for years to make up for all the time wasted on things like The Vanishing.

edit: upon further review that last bit sounds rather snide and that wasn't intended. I only intended it to be a little snide

On the one hand, I love F is for Fake, having enjoyed it once in the 90s. Really brilliantly done film that transcends documentary, and really gets to the core of the artistic process. I love the idea of picking it up. On the other hand, it's been in my Hulu queue waiting for a second viewing for ages. A definite maybe?

La Dolce Vita on Criterion finally! The Tati box is going to be great. I almost feel bad for the guy that bought my copy of Playtime last week for $50 on eBay.
Yes to your question, by far

La Dolce Vita blu-ray released by criterion is one of the greatest events in blu-ray history. There is no other studio that would do it justice, sorry Fox/Koch Lorber. Like I mentioned several times already, this is Criterion's best year.

Tati's box set and one of John Ford's best films, it sure is the best month.

Can't argue with any of that! Every month seems to bring surprise after surprise.

The funny thing is that we still have two more months of 2014 releases to go.

True

I am trying to think a set of films that could top this month.

Dekalog
Andrei Rublev
The Faith trilogy by Bergman
Au Hasard Balthazar
Any Buñuel Film

Maybe this set would top the month of October, if the stars are correctly aligned with a solar eclipse.

What set of blu-ray releases would top this month for you?

I'm surprised we've gone over a year without a Godard release (the now pointless Dual Format release not included). Masculin Feminin seems like the next obvious one for an upgrade, but after recently watching most of his 80s work, I would like to see them step out of the New Wave comfort zone again. King Lear would be great, or Sauve qui peut (La Vie).

Okay, what an amazingly strong month!

La Dolce Vita is one of cinema's greatest masterpieces and now its coming to Criterion blu-ray? Amazing...massive..gigantic...unreal..wow. F for Fake is pretty good too as is the John Ford film, My Darling Clementine. And then for me, the highlight is the Tati box set. I frickin' love Jacques Tati's films. Finally, The Vanishing might just be a blind-buy for me because of how thrilling this is.

A bloody amazing month of announcements!!!

Although I'm tempted to add even more this month, I will round out my haul with Scanners and High & Low.

If Twin Peaks wasn't out at the end of the month, I would've also gotten Judex, Nashville and The Hidden Fortress.

And the amazing thing is that the Criterion laserdisc was released in 1992 and Kubrick was still alive and well!

Nope. It was part of a different numbered collection, though: Fox Studio Classics. After All That Jazz and now this, it would seem to be definite that Criterion has a "relationship" with Fox now.

Also, The Complete Jacques Tati is only partially an upgrade. Only four of the six films in it were released by Criterion on DVD (which is why there are only two "missing" spine numbers; the other four have their original DVD spine numbers). Oddly enough, though, the other two were released by Criterion on LD).

Phenomenal month, I imagine I'll be purchasing all of these during the November sale, though I will be screening My Darling Clementine via library rental first, as John Ford has been a bit hit and miss for me (I loved Stagecoach, but am not as high on The Searchers or The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence).

The Tati set also looks excellent. Those special features are an absolute goldmine, even by Criterion's lofty standards.

October looks great! Still stunned with the My Darling Clementine news! More John Ford is always good news!!!

Made my second B&N haul today, to grab both Pickpocket and Scanners, and also threw in A Man Escaped.

November will have to be really something for them to top this month. For me, this month is probably their best since November 2011.

So.. bring on The Decalogue, Criterion.

It feels out of the blue but that doesn't seem totally right either.
I don't recall that it was ever hinted at. It certainly took me by surprise. I was expecting Fox to release it on Blu-ray as part of their Studio Classics series (unnumbered, unlike the Studio Classics DVDs).
