I'm just starting to get into criterions. So far I have 8 in blu ray. A noob question, are people finding that big a difference between the DVD and blu ray versions especially when they are released at the same time? I know that my blu ray copy of Charade looks a lot better than my 2004 dvd copy. I'm looking to pick 39 Steps, Lady Vanishes, and Diabolique. They all had both blu ray and dvd versions released on the same day.

I'd recommend the Blu-ray over the DVD version any day of the week. It might not be a massive improvement, but it just makes your viewing experience that much better.

You hated it so much you wished it was twice as long!

I loved it. I guess you can say it doesn't delve into certain issues as much as you'd have liked it to, but I don't think it's beneficial complaining what a movie is not. I found it to be a deceptively simple story about growing up, that is amazingly engaging and touching at the same time. I get what you're saying about some of the linear jumps, but it'd not only necessary, but super appropriate in some way, especially when viewed from a child's perspective.

I finally finished it last night and it is pretty incredible. It pretty well gets better with each film (with the exception of Under the Influence eclipsing Chinese Bookie). Shadows isn't great, but it works well as an introduction. Opening Night is a perfect film.

Sure using the same actor over 12 years and seeing him age infant of us was a nice touch but the film was so flawed. A lot of the characters were really annoying and the acting came across as so forced and fake.

It hardly explored key elements of growing up and coming of age, it touched upon elements but hardly explored them enough. Also the film was too short, I feel it needed to be a 6 hour+ film, maybe in two parts like Nymphomaniac for example, that way we would have seen some stories develop and would have been more important, time just moved far too quickly and when an important part of his life happened it just ended so quickly?

For example, when the mum married the teacher it was like over one cut and it happened, and then suddenly he was violent and a drunk? it just didn't explore it enough or show any development.

Also, the film hardly explored sex and death which are huge themes when coming of age and growing up, it touched upon sex a little but hardly enough.

Im probably not explaining it well enough but there are far better coming of age films out there that doesn't need to be over hyped, and tbh the filmd over 12 years came across as a gimmick to hide these flaws and such.

I don't really like saying this, but it seemed like you kind of missed part of the point. The importance is not on the landmark events, but instead the little everyday things that make up life. Maybe it's because you're not (North) American, but almost everybody will be able to find some thread to latch onto that somehow connects to their own experience of either growing up or parenthood. It's too bad you didn't like the film or found it "overhyped," but it seems your reasoning is misplaced.

I got that part, I just didn't know if that's what people were using to determine there would be a plastic case, or if there was additional infomation indicating the plastic case bit. Criterion has a bunch of single disc releases as digipacks, so I'm not sure how what they have announced = plastic case.

You have a good point there. I guess the individual dvd and blu releases could still be digipaks. I automatically assumed like most members here that the case will be plastic. I guess we will have to wait until October to find out for sure...

On a different note, I am still unable to put my thoughts on Jeanne Dielman into words for a post on this forum. That film is still rattling around in my brain and defies explanation.

Thanks. I appreciate the input. Some people buy blus just to have them and not care if they're an improvement over the DVD.

I have only2 criterion DVDs (Spellbound and Le Corbeau). So it's not like I'm upgrading.

So would I. I've just finished watching the first six episodes (the sixth featured the Apollo 11 mission). I'll be watching the rest tomorrow (or later today, depending on your point of view). I'd forgotten that Al Reinert (For All Mankind) wrote the Apollo 8 episode, and co-wrote the Apollo 11 episode.

In July 1969, I was in Salzburg, Austria on a study program. My fellow students and I stayed up to watch the TV coverage of the landing (which happened at about 10pm in Austria), and then got up at 4:30 in the morning to start watching coverage of the EVA. Classes that day were cancelled, and we wandered around the city. Any electronics store that had TVs in the windows had crowds clustered around them. It was a good day to be American.

Some westerns NEED to be in black and white, like some dramas and most film noir. For example the original 3:10 TO YUMA would simply not have the dramatic power if it had been in color. The remake is a different case, but even that might have been a bit more intense in black and white. A film like PURSUED or THE GUNFIGHTER or THE MISFITS or THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALENCE would definitely have lost something in color, not to mention the classic westerns of William S. Hart shot by Joe August.

Other westerns, the color is a major contribution to the story, like JESSE JAMES, DUEL IN THE SUN (boy does that ever need to be on Blu-ray!), SHANE, DENVER & RIO GRANDE, RUN FOR COVER, THE MAN FROM LARAMIE, RIVER OF NO RETURN, THE BIG COUNTRY, RIO BRAVO, THE PROFESSIONALS, et al.
