While I think that his films got better as the years progressed, I still think I enjoyed Rupture and Le Grand Amour (it's very avant-garde in a Buñuel sort of way) the most. Also, kudos to the nod to Fellini's La Strada in Yoyo. All-in-all, Pierre Etaix is certainly not a bad set, but nothing that I could see myself rewatching again.

I also finished watching All That Jazz a little while ago. It's a pretty morbid film at times, but the acting is great and it's definitely entertaining, as well. Who knew that singing about death could be so fun?

All That Jazz is being released by Criterion on the 26th. Will you be upgrading?

My wife and I have really enjoyed the Etaix set, except the documentary film. That was very grating. I think we still have one of the films left to watch though.

I don't think so. At least not any time soon.

The documentary started off cool for me, but I honestly didn't like it by the time it was over. It raised some interesting questions, but I felt it jumped around too much.

I think my order is:

-Rupture
-Le Grand Amour
-As Long As You've Got Your Health
-Happy Anniversary
-Yoyo
-The Suitor
-Land Of Milk And Honey
-Feeling Good

I watched The Suitor and Yo-Yo about a year ago. Got busy and by the time I went back to being able to watch films I moved on to other titles. Looking forward to diving back in thanks to this post. Hoping to finish before the Tati set comes out and compare the two friends' styles.

I believe I read somewhere that Pierre Etaix was influenced by Jacques Tati and his style. Still, it would be cool to compare the two.

I wouldn't go that far myself, I've certainly disliked Criterion titles that I'd never own, I've certainly seen worse than The Game. I'd say it's a good movie, but definitely not great, and when you put it up against Fincher's other work, it's doomed.

Especially when you add in that they won't even deliver it - you get a card and have to go to the sorting office to pay and collect! You should get a refund for doing their job for them.

They do deliver it, if you pay online or send the card back with the value paid in stamps at the post office.

Another stunning film from Hitchcock. Amazing film making on the effects for 1940. Like most other Hitchcock films before 1965, the film builds and builds with stunning results. The picture quality is top notch.

They usually leave a note and and then you sort out redelivery/payment, would be nice if they could take payment at door :/

Okay, folks. My mind = blown.

I just realized why the tower at the beginning of Antonioni's L'Eclisse looked familiar to me.

From L'Eclisse:

And now...

(drumroll, please)

From The Last Man on Earth, starring Vincent Price...

At least now, we know what happened at the ending of L'Eclisse, and
[Show spoiler]why the main characters are absent from the final shots.

They caught the disease, became vampires, and were killed by Vincent Price as he roamed the empty daytime landscapes with a stake in hand to kill the infected one by one.

This explains so much. So much.

I'd really like to see Criterion do a Scorsese set, definitely with After Hours, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, and Bringing Out the Dead. Throw in Boxcar Bertha and Italianamerican as extras, and his Dolce & Gabbana commercial Street of Dreams, and you'd have an awesome Scorsese set.

They used to take payment at the door - and sometimes our postie would be nice and ignore the violent green "CHARGES!!!" sticker on the box and just hand it in... ah, happy days

My Demy set just got posted by B&N; so that's two parcels over the limit that are on the way. I am worried that my first foray into over-the-limit Criterions is going to hit me hard. I could've posted them to my San Diego office but I'm not there till October and the 10% CA sales tax is the same as postage to the UK!

Bringing Out the Dead in any edition would make my day. Terribly underrated, imo.

I've been patiently waiting for After Hours for years now, so if Criterion decides to release this, I'd scream Hallelujah!

I've got a STRONG feeling that there will be something special for me this month. Last time I had a strong feeling, they announced Y Tu Mamá También.

So with that being said, expect one of the following:

* most likely
A Woman is a Woman - Godard
Ikiru - Kurosawa
Elevator to the Gallows - Malle

quite possible
Contempt - Godard
Bicycle Thieves - De Sica

long shots
Bob le flambeur - Melville
Talk to Her - Almodóvar
Le boucher - Chabrol

so yeah.. we'll be hearing about one of these...

I was just listening to the audio commentary on L'Eclisse and apparently that view out the window is a photograph Antonioni placed there. That neighbourhood was going to be a world fair, but instead it's where the nouveau riche settled.
