Maybe The Big Chill, Tootsie, and Eraserhead as well if my wallet approves.

The only Criterion titles that I plan to purchase before November are The Innocents and The Vanishing, because those are day one priority, or really close to day one.

This all might be up in the air, though, if I end up moving to a new place in November or December.
Yeah, I definitely want to add the Capra. I gotta work it into my budget.

After going to see this sensory overload at the theater to find out what all of the excitement is about, I'm now tempted to watch something really quiet and subtle.

I may have to shake the dust off of my Criterion Blu-ray of A Man Escaped.

Actually, Robinson Crusoe on Mars might be the better option. I've been looking forward to seeing how well my old DVD has been upgraded.

Yeah, I'm a fast reader, so subtitles are usually no big barrier to me.

I think I prefer subtitles to dubs because what you see on screen is so related to the actors' speaking. Even down to individual words, body language reinforces stress. If you have a word like "priority," it's likely that if an actor is going to make some movement with that word, it's going to happen on the "-or-" part -- hand gesture, body movement, facial expression change.
Languages like Japanese, which don't have stress, still have links between body movement and speech. So even if I don't understand a language, the actors' speech is almost like a soundtrack that choreographs movement in the film, and when I see a movement and hear a different language, it's like watching a film with the wrong musical soundtrack. Well anyway, to me.

So preferring subs isn't really snobbishness; it's kinda like having the right color setting on the screen.

You think "Downhill" could be the next Alfred Hitchcock reléase??

You know if Criterion has the rights of other Hitchcock movies? They only reléase 4 movies on Blu-Ray:
-THE LADY VANISHES
-THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
-THE 39 STEPS
-FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT

Just found the Penn State library site, where I, as a Penn State student, can request things from any of their libraries. So guess who just requested Fellini's Amarcord and the OOP David Lynch Lime Green set?

Same (general idea) here! I am a UT Grad Student and in my department I have access to 16,000 individual titles on a whole sampling of formats at my disposal. I'm dying to take a look at the 35mm reels and see some films in their native format.

I don't know much about rights to films, but what are the chances of seeing either Key Largo or Hard Eight (a.k.a. Sydney) on blu-ray? Neither of them are on blu yet and I'd love to see either of them (or both) released by Criterion.

Both Hard Eight and Punch-Drunk Love have been long rumored Criterion titles. Being that both films are Columbia (Sony) distributed titles and Criterion has recently struck up a partnership with Sony, I would say those two are safe to come out.

Key Largo, on the other hand, is a Warner Bros. title. The day that Warner Bros. either stops repackaging everything and / or Criterion strikes a partnership with them will be the day that pigs fly.

Also, you are at the whim of the translations, which are often abridged in order to avoid having a novel's worth of subtitles on the screen, so subtleties of language and dialogue may be lost.

Like you say, it's personal preference (and I can go either way) but I often get the sense that there's some definite snobbery towards dubbing in favour of subtitles which many view as the "correct" or even the more "intellectual" way to go.
Full effect? No. But for me, subs are infinitely better than dubbing, since as others have pointed out I am hearing the actual lines spoken by the actual actors. Thinking of a film like Persona, for instance, I honestly cannot imagine what that film would be like dubbed. Talk about "not getting the full effect!"

And a few years ago when almost every movie I was watching was in French, after a while it began to slowly sink in. I don't mean that I was learning French -- but that I would go long periods of time not even realizing that I was reading the subs in the first place. It just became one cohesive process after a while. It's difficult to explain.

I'll get back to you after my Demy marathon. Of course two of those are musicals.

Two more HD catalogue titles have been added to iTunes (pre-order):

- Shoot the Piano Player
- I Vitelloni

Hopefully blus of both will be on the cards for some future release!

No, it only has the Japanese subs. I have it, and the image quality is quite nice, though.

Paramount is handling the initial DVD/bluray release for Boyhood. The Criterion release will come later. It is not yet being produced and the release date is unknown.

That's how I thought it would happen. I'll probably buy the Paramount release first.

I ended up watching Bresson's Pickpocket, since I purchased that one recently and had not had a chance to watch it yet. I'll write more words about this movie later today when I have time, but I loved it.

I picked up the new UK Blu-ray of Shoot The Piano Player as it has Raoul Coutard's audio commentary on it, which is lacking from the Criterion DVD (which I also own). It's a nice disc too, well worth the £12.99.

Helllllll yeah! Love I Vitelloni. I think you could draw an interesting comparison to Y Tu Mama Tambien, with good childhood friends growing apart as they enter adulthood.

Yes, a great film! And I'm not sure why I included a comma there - must have been in 'I, Claudius' mode and typed without thinking.

Or maybe you were thinking of I, A Woman.
