I've been watching quite a bit of Bergman lately, and found it interesting that while some of his films are accessible and understood on the first go-around, others leave me completely perplexed by the time the credits roll.

So far, from what I've watched, here is the most accessible Bergman to the least accessible:

The most notable transition in accessibility happened when I watched the faith trilogy, since it went from a relatively straight-forward, but serious take on mental illness (Through a Glass Darkly) to one of the most perplexing films I've seen (The Silence).

I still own, but have yet to watch: Summer with Monika, Summer Interlude, Scenes from a Marriage, and The Magician. I also plan on seeking out Cries and Whispers, The Virgin Spring, Hour of the Wolf, and Shame.

My ranking is something along the following (I consider all to be a 4/5 and higher).

The Purple Rose of Cairo is great and according to Twilight Time, will be released next year.

Just began my Hulu Plus membership and watched Ozu's Late Spring, which I enjoyed, but not as much as Tokyo Story. I was on the fence about Hulu Plus, but with all of the Criterion films available, I just couldn't say no.

I don't think Late Spring has the same effect on me as Tokyo Story, but I still think it was quite a good movie.

I'm surprised people are dropping their prices but I'm holding onto my copy since the UK version has a different color timing then the previous BLUs. Waiting to see what Criterion's new blu will look like first.

I really enjoy Late Spring. I love the bicycle ride sequence which features one of the few times Ozu strays from his normal camera height and angle shot that are synonymous with his films.
