Just finished watching Solaris (1972) for the first time. I can safely say it wasn't my cup of tea. It had an interesting premise, some nice imagery here and there, but overall I just found it to be quite dull, and hard to get into. The first half worked better for me, but about 2/3rds in, it just felt kind of maddening, and I couldn't wait for it to end. The score was nice though, quite haunting at times

Basically, just put it in the machine. If it plays, you're all right.

Now look at the disc itself - is it a weird brownish colour or going that way? If it is, it may not play much longer.

It's a legitimate problem. Way too many instances of it happening not to be, and happening in the same patterns. The disc most affected seems to be WALKABOUT - mine is coffee-stain coloured and won't play at all and I've seen several other posts saying the exact same.

It's most likely a pressing-plant problem and only affects a few discs within a certain time period as far as we know. Obviously, some people are running around like headless chickens as they are wont to do on here, even for much more minor reasons. But that's no excuse to dismiss the non-hysterics on here - it's a definite problem but the world still turns and Criterion will carry on.

not saying that it can't be true, but I don't know how other people store their movies and I need not qualify how unreliable the internet can be, so there's no need for anyone to panic.

btw... I'm the farthest thing from a Criterion fanboy. I know that I can't expect you to follow or recall things I've said, but anyone who might have a bead on me knows that I'm the last person to fit that description
I am taking it easy. I just want people in this thread (who have not been following the Summer Hours thread) to at least:

- check out the thread (it is currently only 9 pages so it is a quick read) or CriterionCast (have not checked out Critierion Forum yet).
- now check your discs, especially those released from 2010 and before as they are the ones that seem to have the same symptoms.

It is obvious you have not read the thread at all but I was hoping some people could at least come to their own conclusion without Jon Mulvaney/Criterion telling you there is a problem.

Anyway, it makes no difference to me whether you have defective disks or not. But I think this problem is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. Where there is smoke, there is usually fire.

Interesting statement, there. Basically:

A problem is not a reality until those responsible for the problem say it is.

My mind's already buzzing, thinking of the possible applications for that little gem of reasoning.

(Mr Rumsfeld, is that you?)

Yup, what was just thought to be Summer Hours and Walkabout now seems to potentially include other early titles like M, Stage Coach, Paris Texas, The Thin Red Line, etc.

It happens to be the first Truffaut film I've seen, which sounds ridiculous if you know me because I'm a huge fan of french film and specifically the french new wave! I'm just not quite sure what to think of it, though! I love the acting and design. But I don't like the story or characters that much; well, at least not as much as I thought I would. After watching a supplement from a documentary about the real people I appreciated it a lot more and saw it as a better film in my mind but I think I need to watch it again to really form my full opinion on it. I want to know what you think of Jules and Jim
I think that all films need to be viewed within the context of their time. And "Jules and Jim" was an incredibly remarkable film for 1961, especially for Americans who were used to what Hollywood was producing.

American films repeatedly followed the formula Boy Meets Girl, Boy Loses Girl, Boy Gets Girl. "Jules and Jim" had a convoluted path through Boy Meets Girl, Boy Shares Girl, Boy Loses Girl, Boy Shares Girl, Boy Loses Girl Forever. Quite a different take on life and probably heavily influenced by the losses in WWII. It was only 16 years after the end of the war and Europe still had not been completely rebuilt.

I probably didn't see it until around 1968 or shortly after, but it was still remarkable even then.

Not that Hollywood was producing bad films in that year - the top 10 included "101 Dalmatians", "West Side Story", "The Guns of Navarone" and "La Dolce Vita" and the year also gave us "Judgement at Nuremberg", "The Misfits", "The Hustler" and "Raisin In the Sun". But it also gave us tons of Elvis, Gidget, Beach Blanket Bingo movies, a Peyton Place sequel and Jerry Lewis and not many personal films with the exuberance of a "Jules and Jim". Being a fan of French films I'm sure you realize that French directors like Truffaut had a completely different take on the role of film and how they saw the world. Even though the film takes place in the first half of the century, it's mindset predicted the coming hippie era.

You might want to read Roger Ebert's retrospective view of the film:

Your statement: "it is only a reality when CC confirms the problem."

My interpretation: "A problem is not a reality until those responsible for the problem say it is."

Can you explain the difference to me? Or is reading comprehension not your forte?

I didn't choose the word "reality." thebunk did.

so, that may be what I said, but it is not what I'm saying.

let's just say that "contextual reading" is not your forte. but keep pushing.
you're nowhere near as clever as you think you are, my friend.

FFS, I'll play the disc when I get home and have a look to see if there is any discolouration.

I don't think there is any need for insults to be flying around.

So just tell him what you're saying.

Cause it sounds like you're saying the people reporting problems are in the tin foil hat club and you're not going to believe otherwise until you hear it from John Mulvaney himself.

I Believe it is best to keep the disc problems in the other thread, by now it has enough popularity to attract anyone with CC titles, it is now 15 pages long.
