Damn, the DVD I got from the library of Last Year at Marienbad is amazing. The extras are terrific. And I can only imagine what it looks like on BD. *sigh* May have to just drop the C-Note and be done with it.

If only they would re-release it.

Going through a Visconti phase, caved and finally bought the (I think OOP) DVD of The Damned, so thank me when it's announced on Criterion next month.

Can you buy Death in Venice too, so that it will be released on Bluray too?

I finished Che tonight and Benicio Del Toro absolutely killed it. One of the best performances that I've ever seen.

The story was pretty interesting, as well, as I was familiar with some of the players but not necessarily all of the events that had transpired. Still, I can't help but feel that something was missing. For one, I personally think they should have shown everything that occurred between the two parts. Oh well.

Jour De Fete Blu-ray REVIEW

The same excellent Canal restorations for the 1949 and 1964 versions are used.

A note I would like to leave here, as there might be some confusion going forward:

Both Canal and Criterion are referring to the full-color version as, and I quote, the 1994 version and the 1995 version. These versions are identical, both coming from the standard definition source -- which means that they are presented upscaled on both releases -- but I have flagged them as described by the two parties. Additionally, they have different running times, but the discrepancies are caused by the different conversion methods. (PAL/NSTC and upscaling). There are additional notes for the 1949 and 1964 versions where some logos and tech credits have also introduced some minor discrepancies. There is no missing content.

Can't wait to get my hands on the Tati set. Then there's La Dolce Vita and some September releases I need to pick up during the sale. It's that time of year again for Criterion to spoil us.

If SC titles start re-joining the collection, I'd think it worth the wait. I will be all over a CC edn of Grand Illusion (not that the SC/LG version is bad), if announced and will recalibrate purchase-plans in anticipation of other titles returning to the fold.

No guarantees, but it's not at all likely. The issue is due to oxidization of the metallic surface of the disc. It's an issue that, given current data, seems to be an issue with a specific pressing plant (Sonopress/Arvato) during a specific time frame (mid-2009 to mid-2010). And, in fact, it appears to be confined to bad batches, as not all copies of the affected titles from that plant in that time frame are bad.

Someone brought that up at some point, but it's been debunked. If it was the cause of the problem, then allCriterion discs, regardless of pressing plant, would be affected. Even more, discs from a large number of other labels would also be affected.

(God...can you imagine the hysteria if the OOP Twilight Time titles started rotting?)
Thanks for posting this link, jayembee. I leave town for two weeks, and the world trembles on its foundations.

My Criterion list is in my sig if that's any help

Bookie is my favorite Cassavetes film. It's incredibly gorgeous. Personally, I think Opening Night is the best to start with in that box-set if you're a first time viewer. Solely because it's got EVERYTHING. I've never met a person who has seen that film and disliked it. Faces is hit or miss for some people, but it is brilliant. All-in-all, you really can't go wrong.

Just noticed that My Darling Clementine is already in stock on the CC site, so between this, the maintenance notice earlier today and the Eraserhead back in stock, all seems to point that we may not have to wait until next Tuesday for the next flash sale.

I wonder if its just worth waiting until the Barnes & Noble sale happening in a few weeks? I think in 3 weeks? I might just wait and skip the flash sale since you can save more money with the Barnes sale with those added coupons. The question is, maybe the Criterion.com flash sale is advantageous to those people living in foreign countries? (or perhaps they don't ship overseas?)

Criterion don't ship over seas. B&N does.

I believe it is advantageous if you don't have a B&N close, and if you live in a state that don't need to pay taxes (anywhere but New York and Kentucky), also only if you purchase at least $50 for free shipping.

Actually Barnes & Noble is way better than Criterion.com for international shipments (in Canada anyway). The shipping costs are cheaper and its relatively fast (during their last sale my 2 orders came within a week). On top of that I can use the non-members coupon and B&N uses USPS and I never got any custom fees with them. Meanwhile Criterion.com deals with DHL or UPS which means a HIGH probability of custom fees.

Who knows, it may happen, now that it appears that Criterion and StudioCanal are playing together again.

Well, the extra stuff wasn't exactly free. If distributers suddenly dropped 2D releases and only offered more expensive 3D/2D releases I suspect those of us with little or no interest in the 3D discs would voice our displeasure.

I certainly would.
