(and no, I can't really believe I put Frances Ha ahead of Double Life or Blow Out or Thief or Naked but there you go)
I can. Watched it last night for the first time on Netflix and was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it, given that I generally avoid lugubrious, self-analytic, 'relationship' movies, especially those who feel it necessary to convey a 'message'. But this was so much more. I loved and cared for the Greta Gerwig character and was involved enough in her story right from the start that I honestly didn't even notice, until I saw a forum comment later, that it was shot in black-and-white. And by the end I was more concerned that she find some happiness in life than by the route she may or may not have taken to achieve it. Just another example of how cineplex Hollywood is being shamed by the independents.

My first post.

Mine would be:
Wings of Desire
Paris, Texas
Down by law
Benjamin Button
Three colors: Blue (I'm not a big fan of the trilogy but this one is great)

Her performance in that movie is simply stellar. The movie is compelling from the first moment she is on the screen. And I loved the black-and-white cinematography.

Welcome!

It's interesting, when people say that Blue/White/Red is their favorite. I've been convinced that it tells a lot about the person which film they pick. I just have never been able to figure out WHAT it is saying.

Red is my favorite, btw.

I paused La Dolce Vita to let you all know that Criterion does not include subtitles for the English speaking portions of the film. It certainly would have been nice.

Still, those who have yet to watch the film will be pleasantly surprised to see how excellent it looks with the new 4K restoration. Absolutely beautiful!

Just curious, was Criterion supposedly going to release an updated edition of that film with supplements? It seems like they rushed out to get this in their collection in time for the 2014 Academy Awards this year so people could purchase this. Any idea Criterion is going to re-release this with more extras? It's an anomaly of a release in my opinion, but then again there are plenty of Criterion titles with zero supplements.

Speaking of which, I might as well ask everyone: what is your favorite bare-bones Criterion release that comes without any supplements?

Mine would have to be: Letter Never Sent

I've noticed that that seems to be standard practice with a lot of foreign language films. At least, with some I've been watching lately. They just don't sub the English portions. I guess I kind of get it, but I agree with you that it would be nice. I mean, why not, really? What, would it take 10 minutes?

As to your first question, the answer is probably yes, since I just ordered this one. It's almost a fait accompli at this point. The Universe hates me.

I don't really have an answer to your second, because I almost never buy anything without at least minimal supplements.

I know I'm supposed to say Letter Never Sent and part of me definitely wants to but Three Outlaw Samurai was a lotta fun

(I'm not counting Blue is the Warmest Color since that was a rental and I'm holding out for the full version down the road...throw that in the mix and it would win no contest).

It's a tie currently between Letter Never Sent and Summer Interlude. Could change once I get my B&N sale items.

If I recall correctly, Everlasting Moments concerns a woman finding her independence during a time when the male was seen as the dominant-being and head of the family. From that respect, it is quite captivating. Furthermore, the mise-en-scène, the lighting, and the other components making up the film are well-established by Troell. Unfortunately, the film as a whole, specifically the story, did not leave too much of an impression on me.

I see a lot of praise about the film, though, so if you are feeling testy you should definitely check it out. It certainly won't hurt.
Fair enough! For me, I thought the story was really lovely, especially the fact that photography played such a prominent role (not a spoiler). I also found the cinematography and lighting to be some of the best I've seen; I loved the sepia tone of the film and several shots really looked like photos. The train scene in particular, if I recall.

Letter Never Sent is incredible. The cinematography is about as good as it gets; reminiscent IMO of Ivan's Childhood but more dreamlike.

Speaking of barebones, how is the only Ichikawa released on blu thus far the barebones Makioka Sisters? I would have thought more would've been released by now, although of course the same could be said of many directors.

I've seen Carlos mentioned. I tend to consider it a mini-series instead of a feature film, but I can't recommend that one enough. So well done; I think it's much better than Che (which I liked but didn't love).

I just checked the page today and it still says this:

"A full special edition treatment of this film will follow at a later date."

La Dolce Vita (Honestly, I thought I had already ordered this! OOPS! Also an upgrade.)
Don't get rid of your dvd. Not all the special features made the transition to blu.

I have to add to my earlier question about "favorite Criterion release with no supplements" that Identification of a Woman was a close second for me in terms of a barebones Criterion release, mainly because its 1) Antonioni and 2) has a cool soundtrack.

I've only been through Three Colors once and Red was pretty solidly my favorite but I have a feeling White might gain some ground over time.

Mine too , although on my first watch, my favorite was White.

To the question about barebones release it has to be The Organizer for me, really wasn't expecting such a great film, need to get more Monicelli in blu.

I was skeptical that Hoop Dreams would ever be upgraded, but this remaster video has me reconsidering.
