The man with the cart is Fassbinder's The Merchant of Four Seasons (shirt and apron match):

I agree... it does look like a drawing of her... but it can't be a clue to that movie. It just can't.

Maybe, just maybe, Criterion has plans to release the original versions without the dubtitles?

Re- directors streaks. I always think of Godard's 60s run when this question comes up.

Breathless
Le Petit Soldat
A Woman Is A Woman
Vivre sa Vie
Les carabiniers
Contempt
Band Of Outsiders
Une Femme Mariee
Alphaville
Pierrot Le Fou
Masculin Féminin
Made In USA
Two Or Three Things I Know About Her
La Chinoise
Weekend.

15 stone-cold masterpieces in 7 years. And that's not included shorts and collaborations.

Disney's release has the original subtitles along with the subtitles. It also has pretty much identical special features to the international releases. What it doesn't have is the original opening titles in Japanese.

Now, even if Criterion really really really wanted to fix that and release it, they would still have to get the rights from Disney, and that is simply not happening.

And people who keep bringing up Wes Anderson as an example for Disney/Criterion relationship- he's a unique case. If they still has a working relationship, I'm sure they would have released upgrades for Armageddon and The Rock already.

Someone mentioned at criterionforum that the clouds in the drawing could be for Clouds of Sils Maria.

Somebody mentioned on the other forum that the car on the bridge could be the Carnival of Souls.

That makes sense.

I always enjoy reading everyone's post about what titles might be coming out this year. It sounds like there's some great films so 2015 is looking very promising!!! Would love to see STRAY DOG this year.

The thing I pointed out about Nausicaa earlier is that it just received a new restoration in Japan in the Miyazaki Ghibli collection set. I have it. It is very different from the current Blu-ray release. So perhaps Disney has worked something out with Criterion and they will issue it with the new restoration? And perhaps some supplements associated with Ghibli.

Also, the drawing that reminded some people of Ponyo is because of the watery shaped face in the ocean that can be seen in the film. It looks pretty similar. As to Ponyo, the film had a 8 hour or so making-of in Japan that has never been subtitled and it also wasn't released in the US with lossless Japanese. So there would certainly be plenty of material for a Criterion edition if they went down this route.

For sure that's what the man and cart represent. The cart itself appears to have some vases in it though, is that relevant in that movie, or is that a separate clue? I believe in The Merchant of Four Seasons, he sells fruit

Given that he mentioned The 1000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse, I suspect that dsman71 is referring to the 1962 remake of Testament. These two films were released on DVD by All Day under the banner "The Diabolical Cinema of Dr. Mabuse".

Maybe the woman by the river beside the bloodstain resembles the North American Distribution of Lady Snowblood.

If ILD does happen (and that doodle is clearly Llewyn), Criterion could add the Showtime concert footage (Another Day/Another Time) that accompanied the Canadian release. That would be deserving of a re-release. Really hoping this is the case.
