Last year's was the last Tuesday of the month. I'd expect similar this year.

But even when Criterion got those new plastic cases people still cried and moaned. Also flimsy? The newer digipaks have been very high quality and very sturdy compared to some of the older stuff.

You can't please everyone I guess. People were more upset about paying bluray prices when they only use the DVD (they ignore the fact when/if they upgrade they don need a second purchase for Bluray).

Oh well!

I just hope people enjoy unfolding leaflets and folding them back :P lol
I like digipacks aesthetically more, but I prefer the plastic cases because they endure in time more.
I just received my Fanny and Alexander digipack the other day, and it had a bit of creases on the edges and I'm sure as time goes by it will get worse.

You can always store the discs in those dvd cases for easier access - although it would be cool if C offered replacement case for every digipak release to please everyone lol

Second, are there any upcoming releases of the 1940 Thief of Bagdad planned? Criterion, etc.

Apologies if this has already been covered. Thanks!
I'm surprised the film hasn't received an upgrade yet. For some reason it seems like a film they'd release near the July sale. This is 100% my guess though.

I just watched the Palm Beach Story disc. Grade A movie, lovely transfer and solid extras. I particularly enjoyed the 20-minute chat with Screwball expert James Harvey. It was the first time I'd seen the film, and it's a lot more "out there" than I ever expected, it's a truly strange film.

Can't speak for everyone, but I didn't mind a Digipak here and there. But then when they went dual format it became clear that almost every single release was going to be a digipak, and I was certainly frustrated by that. I was happy to see the move back to clear cases.

When I read this quote and because of your icon, I couldn't help but think that it was being uttered by Woody Allen.

In non-Criterion news, I just topped the 1,000 list on movies owned with my Best Buy purchases of Big Trouble in Little China ($4.99) and The Grand Budapest Hotel ($5.99) being #999 and #1,000 respectively.

Nonsense, Woody Allen HATES home theater.
He tries to create worlds where revival theaters still exist in NY. (Or Europe.)

So is The Last Emperor Blu-Ray actually OOP, or are they just switching over to a clear case version? Out-of-stock on Amazon.

A film that is currently out of stock on Amazon does not equal it being Out of Print.

That being said, it is not listed as Out of Print on Criterion's website so it is safe to assume that Amazon has simply run out of inventory.

Considering the case and insert cost more to produce than the disc, that would be a waste of money.

I agree, Riot in Cell Block 11 is really something else. And thank you Criterion, would never have heard of this or watched it if it wasn't for them.

I know, just would be nice if there was the option :P

I did love the new plastic cases though, dunno why they didn't stick with that for a bit longer!

Our review will be up tonight, but I wanted to leave a small note. This release eliminates all of the issues present on the Canal release -- the smearing/electronic sharpening is gone. So, if some people have been waiting for comments to make sure that the release is as good as it ought to be before placing their pre-orders, you can do that now without worrying about the issues from Canal's release

My local Costco had The Last Emperor (and Tess) in clear plastic cases.

Unfortunately, the lack of Pynchon's absurd humor in PTA's adaptation was my biggest disappointment with the film...meh. You're right, the book is great and one of the most enjoyable reads I have had in a while.

I'm inclined to think that The Essential Jacques Demy set got the worst end of the deal as far as the Dual Format packages go. It's so fragile that it's almost like an origami sculpture.

I'll get around to watching the movies pretty soon, but the package demands careful handling. I was fortunate to get a perfect condition copy at the local Barnes and Noble.

All you have to do is read thread for about a week and it will become clear that there is nothing Criterion can do to please everyone.

They could give away free copies of their releases and people would complain that now they need more shelving.

Then clearly Criterion needs to start selling custom shelf units :P

People would complain that the instructions to build the shelves were a leaflet instead of a booklet.
