I continue to wait impatiently for "The Passion of Joan of Arc" to be re-issued on Blu by Criterion. It's my #1 favorite film, and I long to see it in Region A in high definition.

THE MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA (Dziga Vertov / 1929) - I believe Kino owns the rights to the film, so expect a BD from them if anything.

PATHER PANCHALI (Satyajit Ray / 1955) - The Apu Trilogy is being restored and should be out this year.

A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY (Edward Yang / 1991) - It's in the process of being restored. Criterion is doing some commentaries, I believe, so expect it late this year.

HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR (Alain Resnais / 1959) - It's recently undergone a 4K restoration so I would not be surprised if it was released soon.

THE LADY EVE (Preston Sturges / 1941) - Considering Sullivan's Travels and The Palm Beach Story have been released, there is a good chance that this will be restored soon.

BLOWUP (Michelangelo Antonioni / 1966) - It's a film that many seem to want, so I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion does eventually release it, especially because they have recently struck a deal with Warner.

THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE (Victor Erice / 1973) - Another film that many want and they have stated that more Erice will be coming to BD so expect both this and El Sur.

ROME, OPEN CITY (Roberto Rossellini / 1945) - Criterion has confirmed the release, plus it has recently undergone a 4K restoration. Being that they originally packaged this film with the other two War Trilogy films, expect the others to come as well.

NAPOLÉON (Abel Gance / 1927) - It's been rumored for years and Criterion recently stated that they would restore it if they got the green light.

DUCK SOUP (Leo McCarey / 1933) - Universal owns the rights and we know how much they like to release old films, especially when they just re-released the DVD a year or so ago.

THE LAST LAUGH (F.W. Murnau / 1924) - Kino owns the rights, so they would be the ones to put it out if at all.

PAISAN (Roberto Rossellini / 1946) - See: Rome, Open City.

NIGHTS OF CABIRIA (Federico Fellini / 1957) - Criterion no longer owns the rights, but hopefully they get another deal of sorts with StudioCanal so they can put this one out in HD. Great, great film!

CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING (Jacques Rivette / 1974) - Criterion has stated that they will be releasing Jacques Rivette films in the future, so assume that this is one of them or will eventually be one of them.

MCCABE & MRS. MILLER (Robert Altman / 1971) - Vilmos Zsigmond was recently at Criterion's studios. While it seems likely that it's for The Rose, I pray it's for McCabe and Mrs. Miller.

I should probably check this thread more often, you guys have a lot of good suggestions. Was at Hastings an hour ago, and found 4 different CC. Some black and white shit I'd never heard of, The Life Aquatic, Scanners and another movie with 2 different versions of the same movie, can't remember what it was though. Nothing I was looking for, but it's nice to know I may get lucky one day and find something interesting out and about, without having to order it.

Judging from the forum, it doesn't look as if it was ever released.

Having seen both films and read the book, I think Soderbergh's version of the story is the best. Very interesting differences between all three though, and all good in their own right.

Hmmm, looks like it still hasn't been released. The film is still on their website though...I'm assuming they still have the rights.

I still followed the same procedure that I did with The Third Man by putting the disc and the booklet in one of my empty plastic Criterion single-disc cases and putting the digipak in a safe spot, but I'm still happy that everything looks great.
No need to do that. I have a spare TMWFTE plastic case w cover art. You can have it for free if you PM me where to mail it. You'll have to wait a few days for me to dig it out of one of the boxes in my closet (not sure which one it is in). Can't help you with The Third Man, though. My only copy of that case is holding my only copy of the disc.

I could be entirely mistaken, but it's my impression that Kino only owns the rights to the print that includes the wonderful musical score performed by the Alloy Orchestra.

Other video companies have issued the film here and abroad with more mundane musical accompaniment that failed to capture the rhythm and exuberance of Vertov's brilliant editing ... I've seen two other prints from other sources, and both were huge disappointments.

Apparently there is a multi-region blu-ray edition of the film from Lobster (?!) that is part of a 4-disc box set entitled Dziga Vertov: Man With a Movie Camera. (Their print is issued under its original title, Chelovek s kino-apparatom. I haven't seen this particular release, so I can't comment on it. I'm stubbornly awaiting for Kino to upgrade their DVD, which I consider a near-perfect presentation.

Not quite a remake, but All That Heaven Allows heavilly influenced Ali: Fear Eats the Soul...

I just purchased 'Solaris' today and look forward to watching it this weekend.

When I opened it up, I noticed a small, black "speck" in the printing on the disc. I was curious if anybody else's disc printing had a small, black spot about midway in from the edge, above where it says "SOLARIS The Criterion Collection"? I want to make sure it's just a printing error on mine, and not a physical disc flaw.

If Kino would blu Man with a Movie Camera and Criterion would do Passion of Joan d'Arc, I'd quit complaining about the limits of R1 catalog for a long while. Or at least a little while. You're right about Alloy Orchestra score for the Vertov; it's great. I think the original Metropolis score on the new Kino release is likewise.

With all this love for Soderbergh's Solaris, it makes me wonder if possibly today's movie audiences have more attention deficit disorders than those people back in the 1970s? I think so. It's a chore to watch those older films for young kids these days, and I think people today just don't have the patience, so we naturally understand and adapt to more modern films (especially remakes).

I don't think it's that we younger people have shorter attention spans, it's just that when being brought up on films that follow completely different rules in regards to editing/pacing it can be hard to adjust to older material. Personally I prefer the restrained filmmaking of old (still love many modern films though), but a lot of my friends don't.

I don't want to be judgemental or come across as rude.

But people who say they won't watch films cause they are in black and white or because they have subtitles realllllllllly angers me lol.

I personally think Soderbergh's Solaris is a wrong example as a remake for attention deficit disorders. It happens to be more emotionally direct (some would say less up its own arse) and shorter in length, but it's no Michael Bay style chop-chop-a-thon. It's an excellent film in its own right. I have also seen the Tarkovsky film and read the Tem book, but like this one best of all.
