The way I see it, it's another month where I can catch up and not spend spend spend.

Although I do miss having a release I'm dying to get hands on...

Last one for me was probably Breaking the Waves...

But surely you've heard the title song? It was a huge hit, and is still fondly remembered.

The Rose was Bette Midler's film debut, and she received an Oscar nomination for her bravura portrayal of a fast-living rock singer. It's a thinly-veiled take on the life of Janis Joplin, and features two creditable supporting performances by Frederic Forrest (whatever happened to him?) and Alan Bates. The movie itself falters script-wise, but I think Midler makes it worthwhile.

Don't forget the leaflet inside.

Can't remember the last announcement when I said "I'll buy that" thankfully I have plenty on my shelf to watch. One of the benefits of being less than 2 years into collecting, plenty to catch up on.

Very happy about Limelight, if only to see Norman Lloyd find his way onto a Criterion title.

It's the only one I want now, now. The others are either nope, or maybe.

Also, to the folks complaining about "obscure foreign art house," that's kinda Criterion's bag, if you look at their history of releases. Why do people seem so surprised by this every month?

I think somebody posted a screengrab of the movie title from the film and the time matched the clue, plus Criterion's statement of upcoming Warner Bros. titles for future release gave me hope. Didn't someone in the past mention that the transfer was being supervised by Scorcese?

So, the "exciting" project involving Vilmos Zsigmond is most likely The Rose and not McCabe & Mrs. Miller...?

Decent month, though.

this post fascinates me. no sarcasm intended whatsoever.

1) I'm as annoyed as anyone w/ all the outpouring of affection for David Lynch, so I kinda like it. find my rant about Lynch wanting people to have properly tuned television sets after Eraserhead was released.

but at the same time...

2) although, and needless to say, it is all subjective, I somehow feel compelled to say that Fassbinder's supposed best film isn't even better than Lynch's best work.

..and if you want a scientific polling to prove it, you can refer back to the much discussed list from 2 weeks ago:

I'm in for Merchant of Four Seasons. With the announcement of another Fassbinder film, I think I'll finally pop in Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant tonight.

Nothing stands out for me in May, and thank heavens because I have a few Arrow pre-orders up.

But I am a Fassbinder fan, funny to me someone who never have seen it, calls his film 'shit' because he expected something else, even though Criterion has a history of releasing Fassbinder and Chaplin, so what did one expect?).

If you're referring to me, I said "don't give a shit", not "these films are shit" because I'm pretty sure they aren't. I just have no interest in watching them at this time.

McCABE AND MRS. MILLER would have been much more exciting to me than the titles which have been announced. I vaguely recall thinking that THE ROSE was more soap opera than anything else.

The last Criterion title that really excited me was FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT, which may have been nearly a year ago, now.

Fair enough. Agree on all points, actually. Whining about how criterion has been failing because they haven't released the most mainstream of all possible titles, however, it's a tradition as old as time.

I personally never dismiss a slate of titles that I am not familiar with. I guess that means that those are complaining feels that they have seen every good movie that has ever been made. I don't get it either

Indeed, although my latest crackpot theory is that since their Blu-ray artwork was fantastic up until the release of their covert art book, perhaps one of their best artists had a falling out with them regarding royalties from said book and that's why it's taken a noticeable nosedive in quality recently

I recall a similar vibe - I would have said 'made for TV' but yeah.

But to be fair, that was like a million years ago and I was in high school. Or maybe not even in high school yet.
