cool! it's about time I see it again, actually. for all those pining for Mulholland Drive, they should probably check this one out. It will give them their fix in the meantime.

Hard to make a top 10 criterion list, don't think i can give an order to them:

The Big City
Jules and Jim
12 Angry Men
Three Colors: Red
Stagecoach
Nights of Cabiria
City Lights
Viridiana
Seven Samurai
Black Narcissus

Others that didn't want to left out: The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, Early Summer, Paths of Glory and Solaris.

It didn't quite live up to the hype, the first hour or so was very slow, the characters aren't that likable, and because of those things the urgency to succeed on their mission was a little lacking IMO. Maybe if Mario had an actual relationship with that one girl? Idk. But once they started the trucks, it picked up and became very interesting and suspenseful. The cinematography was great, I loved the look of the scene early on in their journey when they're passing through the tall, thin trees, and the second truck passes them. I just realized while typing this, I'm not sure there was even a musical score, or it was used sparingly, an interesting and appreciated artistic choice. Too much music would've sucked away some of the tension. Overall, a well-done thriller that I will certainly pick up at some point.

4/5

I'm still somewhat mixed how I feel on the ending. It almost felt unnecessary?
I watched the The Wages of Fear for the first time last Autumn, via Criterion blu-ray, and loved pretty much everything about it: the hot, arid, depressed setting; the performances of Yves Montand and Charles Vanel; and the brilliant cinematography in which shades of silver conveyed the impression of insufferable heat. It was my introduction to the career of Henri-Georges Clouzot, and prompted me to seek out his masterpiece of suspense, Diabolique, which I liked even more than The Wages of Fear.

It's funny about the musical score for Fear; as much as I loved the film, I don't remember it, either!

One thing I might add is the fact that the supplements on the Criterion blu-ray are phenomenal, and really increased my appreciation of the film. Since you liked the film, I think you'll appreciate them as well.

A pal is at the SCMS conference, where Criterion just mentioned that the Before Trilogy is coming this year. They said that Boyhood is still definitely happening too.

Great news, i didn't think they would be releasing it that soon, so with the Apu Trilogy we already have two new box sets confirmed for this year, i think there is still chance for another one, hopefully an upgrade

I have a running list of all the CC's I've seen. After I see one, I'll think about it for 30 seconds or so and throw it somewhere in the list. So, I have a ranked top 100, actually.

really? I can remember 'fav by country,' 'top Ford,' 'top Kazan,' 'absolute fav and how many times have you seen it,' 'your first CC purchase (this one has come up more than once) and shell's year end polls, but not a 'top 10 favorites.'

Eek. I don't think I could do that.

According to this list, I've seen 542.

Five years ago I would have had a list ready to recite off the top of my head.

As I've sailed into middle age I've come to believe that each type of film has something wholly unique to offer that can't quite be quantified or ranked... thus I have tried to steer away from these types of exercises lately.

That said, here are ten that come to mind without too much over-thinking, presented in alphabetical order:

Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
Bicycle Thieves
Le Cercle Rouge
L’Eclisse
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Nights of Cabiria
The Seventh Seal
The Times of Harvey Milk
Umberto D
Winter Light
