Just hook up your TV and stuff to a treadmill and the only way to get it to turn on is to exercise lol :P

I just got in on a presale for tickets to The Rolling Stones here in Atlanta on June 9, so I'm looking forward to seeing them for a third time.

I also figured that this occasion would be a good excuse to place an order for the Criterion Blu-ray of Gimme Shelter, since that movie has always intrigued me, so I did that as well. $29 from Barnes & Noble.

Pro-B says in the review that The Rolling Stones were never a great live band. While it's true that I've seen better live bands, I will say that the Stones are captivating in concert even these days simply for the sheer energy of their performances. I had a blast at both shows that I saw (1997 and 2006), at any rate. From what bits and pieces I've seen of Gimme Shelter, I can understand that their live gig chops are not quite the highlight of the film, but it's an interesting flick for so many reasons.

Is that so? Hmmm...they were on my bucket list for quite some time. I saw them last year and thought it was a great show. I am not much of a music aficionado and I see many more solo acts than bands, so I guess I don't have much to base it off of. Regardless, you'll have a great time seeing them again. It's amazing the energy they have. I was on the floor like 5 people deep from the stage. Incredible.

Gimme Shelter is a great film.

Wouldn't Criterion Collection addicts be more likely to be having cheese and crackers with a nice wine, maybe a few other hors d'ouvres? A fine single-malt Scotch with some imported shortbread cookies could also become pretty fattening in a hurry, however. Certain movies call for certain combinations. For Kurosawa, Ozu, etc. it's gotta be sake and ricecakes.

I don't know about all of their live performances, but from what's in the documentary Gimme Shelter I agree with pro-b. The instruments are much better than Mick Jagger's singing. The bizarre performance certainly adds to the film's depiction of that generation however, and sets up the pivotal chunk focusing on the tragic concert that illustrates the end of an era. I watched Gimme Shelter toward the end of March off of TCM, along with the other Maysles docs Grey Gardens and Salesman, and it was definitely the best one IMO and a solid documentary. The one real flaw is just that the doc doesn't get super fascinating or interesting until they start showing Altamont, and that ending is perfect. I'd agree with his rating of 4/5 stars as well, and would consider buying the Blu-ray at some point.

While I'm at it, I'll say Grey Gardens didn't particularly appeal to me. It just felt pointless to be honest, I hardly got anything out of it, except for a few laughs and the shots of the raccoons and exteriors showing the isolated, decaying house that the two women live in. There is some sort of undeniable appeal that's hard to pinpoint, I just wish it had more of a purpose. Salesman I got even less out of, I just could never get engaged with it.

This is actually a pretty good performance from their most productive period, IMO, the Mick Taylor years. Mick was and still is a great blues/rock guitarist, having replaced Eric Clapton in John Mayalls Blues Breakers when Eric left to do Cream:

Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones

Now that you mention it, it would be great to watch Il Sorpasso with some spaghetti with seafood.
(I don't really like fish soup)

And for The Big Chill, i would suggest a salad!

Nymphomaniac has ruined Lars von Trier altogether for me at this point.

I rewatched Breaking the Waves tonight, one of the only films by him that I saw some merit in, but nope.

By the way, it looks like Criterion changed the coloring in the Five Easy Pieces standalone release.

I've only liked Melancholia out of the few of his I've seen and that was more for the "end of the world" aspect than the family drama part of it.

I was let down by Nymphomaniac, it for me had very strong elements and I enjoyed most of it. However his references to his previous works got tedious and certain scenes NEEDED cutting out, I did love the hunour though.

I did love the Littlw Organ School Chapter, I thought it was really well executed.

Yes, how could I not think of that! Criterion collectors are far more sophisticated than the general moviegoing public, at least that's what we all want to believe. Forget the chianti, fava beans and shortbread cookies though. We're talkin' food right out of Babette's Feast. Yes, we're talkin' sumptuous and decadent. We're talkin' turtle soup, buckwheat cakes with caviar and sour cream, quail in puff pastry shell with foie gras and truffle sauce, rum sponge cake with figs and candied cherries and then of course the sherry wine, the champagne, the pinot noir and then of course, how could I forget, the Louis XIII de Rémy Martin cognac with coffee.

Holy baloney. Now that's what we Criterion collectors like to eat!

I've soured on Lars von Trier post-Dogville, and I agree that Nymphomaniac is a mess, possibly his worst film, but nothing he could do will change my adoration for Breaking the Waves.

I wouldn't say Nymphomaniac is a mess, I just feel there was a few poor decisions during the process, from editing to casting.

I loved a lot of it and really loved the digressions - but yeah, doesn't live up to Antichrist, Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark etc :P
