All I want is a Powell and Pressburger film.

Anybody think we'll ever see the criterion of This is Spinal Tap getting the Blu-Ray update? I really want the two original commentaries that aren't on the current release, amongst other extras. Also I'm hoping for The Brood tomorrow. Also I felt like they held back a lot of extras with Boyhood, like a friggin commentary. Maybe a criterion of that down the line.

Since Boyhood will surface in the Collection eventually, I thought I'd share my thoughts.

I was reminded of Sansa Stark's line: "The truth is either terrible or boring." Now, the film is far from terrible, but I did find many parts of it to be boring. I wasn't interested in the character of Mason until he turned 15. I kind of got bored with him maybe 45 minutes later, too. I think my main problem with the film, and, in turn, my problem with Mason and his family, is that cliches run rampant and nothing is given a chance to be explored. Cliches are inherently boring; whatever is cliche is well known, and something so universal, for me, was utterly boring. I can understand how universal themes can be loved by everyone, but I felt here that it just doesn't work. Nothing seemed surprising and that's disappointing.

And, to go off the cliches, it becomes difficult to connect with the characters. Yes, I went through ages 6 through 18, and while I didn't have the same experiences as Mason does, I still feel like the opportunity to connect with the character just didn't happen. I also found it difficult to connect with any other character, too.

I think that because there are distinctly separate moments in Mason's life, the characters aren't fully explored (which, I guess, is ironic). Situations were put in place, but those cliches were put in place as well, and it got boring.

I also felt the acting wasn't that great (and that includes Arquette). But, wait! There is one redeeming grace and that's the music. It's not because the music used was all that great (though I do love me some Black Keys), but because it helped me set a timeline. Since I was born in the early 90s, I was quite familiar with all the songs used in the film, and that helps in the timeline. The film didn't look that bad, either, so marks for that. I'd go with 3.5/5.

Anyone know the chances of Criterion releasing either a Dardennes box set or a Malick box set (not tomorrow, but ever)? I own all but one of Malick's but don't own any of the Dardennes films.

I really like box sets and am dying to get my hands on the Before Trilogy.

I thought he as great in Perfect Sense :P and he has done some very odd films lol

I wont make predictions, my wishlist is still the same Criterion titles that I have on DVD that Id love upgrades for( Fiend without A Face, Le Samourai, Equinox, the Devil and Daniel Webster, Night and the City among others) .

I will say that being a huge fan of Japanese monster/scifi films I would love The Mysterians to get a Criterion blu ray release.. probably unlikely but they did release Godzilla. I heard that there was talk of more Kaiju films but it all went down the toilet !

Does anyone know which studio currently has the rights to Bob le flambeur? Is it Studio Canal?

I have enjoyed every Melville film I have seen. So, I wish Criterion could get the rights back to Bob le flambeur, Army of Shadows, etc.

Also, an upgrade announcement for Le Samourai tomorrow would be great. I would also attempt to perform some cartwheels if more Nicholas Ray (In a Lonely Place) is added to the collection soon.

I love the first Lady Snowblood, but no doubt the first three Scorpion films are much better films than the two Lady Snowblood movies. Criterion, weirdly enough, has never released a Toei film. So, maybe Arrow can get them and give them the treatment they deserve.

My initial thought was The Set-Up. Although, it's been a while since I've seen it and I haven't seen the other guess (Rocco).

The trim on the shorts appears to be the same found here:

Cheers. We are way overdue for some P&P. The top of my wish list would be A Matter of Life and Death, but I know it hasn't been restored. I'd be pleased with A Canterbury Tale upgrade instead.

When I was reading their designs book I was amazed to see some of the titles they'd released on LD. Diva - yes please!

I too would be doing cartwheels in the road if they announced this. I would be in A&E shortly after with a broken neck, however...

Yes, you're right, the French Le Samourai Blu-ray does not have English subtitles.

I've yet to see A Canterbury Tale (my library doesn't carry it), but I'd love a Blu-ray version of I Know Where I'm Going!

I would like AFTER HOURS announced as a summer release.

My dream release would be Antonio Gaudi on BLU

I think there would be a box set out in July also since that is a B&N sale month.

I would love to see a another P&P Criterion release too. Shame Studio Canal has the rights to The Tales of Hoffman. I guess I have to import that release.

I would bet money on Criterion releasing Tales of Hoffmann to blu. It could be a long gap like there was for the UK to US Red Shoes, but I think this is a title they will get a deal with Studio Canal on thru Martin Scorsese. They want to make some money from this title. otherwise I don't see Lionsgate / Studio Canal doing a U.S. release at all.

the whole Studio Canal U.S. collection has just been a flop IMO and S/C has probably lost a ton of money ending their licensing deal with Criterion like they did. bad business move.

I did import the UK Hoffmann disc and it looks as great as you can imagine. worth every penny.

I didn't see any comment on my post about Best Intentions.
Has anyone seen it? Do you think it's a film that Criterion could release, rights wise?
