Wow there seems to be a bit more disappointment than usual, which I find odd because I actually thought this was one of the best months in a while. I cannot wait to get Black Beauty, Moonrise Kingdom, The Killers and Hiroshima Mon Amour. Now all I have to do is cross my fingers and hope they will be included in the BN sale. Otherwise hopefully I can scrap up enough loose change to get a decent Amazon gift card from coin star and I'll get them on Amazon.
Edit: oops sorry I meant Black Stallion not black beauty

That's twice now that I've seen someone call it Black Beauty.

If there's anything definitively positive I can say, nothing got added to my already long list of titles to narrow down for the B&N sale.

I think the disappointment comes from the fact that we've pretty much known everything was coming for some amount of time (Hiroshima for ages, Moonrise for several months, and Laundrette/Life for a few weeks) so there's really only one title that was a surprise (Black Stallion) which isn't even new to BD.

So even though it's the most stuff I want in a single month the whole year so far I too feel a bit disappointed because I was hoping for at least one bigger surprise.

Those people who were in denial that it was Tree of Life not Here's Your Life got a surprise. ;D

Dear to whom it may concern,

You know what is long overdue?

Wes Anderson in the Criterion Closet!

Yeah, you heard me, people.

Get IN THE CLOSET, Wes!

We wanna see you, the most Criterion-decorated director on Earth, pick and choose and talk about his favorite Criterions.

We/I wanna see you pick a bunch of your own movies out of those shelves, and we know there are a lot of your films too.

If there's anyone who is long overdue for a trip into that holy closet, it is YOU, Mr. Anderson!

So, sir, get in there. Pronto.

Sincerely,

J.W. - 007

Yes, I never watched it. It was based on a book instead of a script written to cash in, and they got most of the same actors (including a horse!) back, so it's probably not that bad of a sequel, but it certainly doesn't have the rep of the original. It's probably about Karate Kid 2 level

Very happy with Criterion's latest announcement. Especially for Hiroshima Mon Amour. I was under the impression that we would not get that title until the fall. So I am VERY happy that it will be available this summer.

Also excited for The Killers (both versions), which will be a DVD upgrade for me and also for My Beautiful Laundrette.

Black Stallion seems to be getting a lot of positive reactions so I am now interested in seeing this.

Glad I held off on buying Moonrise Kingdom. Probably my least favorite Wes Anderson film but I will still add to my collection.

I am sure I will also add Here is Your Life to my collection at some point but I will wait for a review to decide how soon I want to purchase it.

This is all beside the point, because it's not the point of yours that I was debating. You said:

Quote:
I don't even know why Criterion is putting that motto about being "a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films" when the films that follow those guidelines are release few and far between. At this point, they just release whatever the hell they want to release.
You weren't saying anything to the effect of "I understand that these films have their importance in the history of cinema, but I think there are others that are more important, and therefore should be given priority". You were flatly stating that Criterion was not following its own...criteria...in releasing "important" films. That was the point I was debating.

Seriously, even if you don't like it or aren't interested in it, I can't believe that you wouldn't think that Hiroshima mon amour isn't a vitally important film in the history of cinema. It's one of the seminal films of the French New Wave.

Admittedly I haven't seen either of the Black Stallion movies since the 1980s but I don't remember the second one being a step down from the original? My childhood memories put it in place with something like Lawrence of Arabia with similar setting and location photography.

I would say the second one hasn't been restored yet.

That's what I was thinking. Only a couple of titles have been released since November's sale that I really want. During July's sale I'll mostly be catching up with past releases I haven't added to my collection yet.

I was hoping more upgrades would be released.

I rather wish they'd used the original poster for BLACK STALLION, which featured a gorgeous hand drawn illustration, but I guess this cover art is nice enough. The sequel ... gawd, just look for it online, the poster says it all.

Straight potboiler story, where Ballard made an intimate myth.

Yes, yes, yes....

Kaufman's HENRY & JUNE hasnt even had a proper DVD release, let alone BD (so far's I know).

I'm surprised and a little disappointed that Two Days, One Night wasn't announced. On the whole though, it's an interesting lineup. Looks like like I'll finally get around to watching Hiroshima.
