But yeah, to the topic of the thread, they won't be on Criterion.

Honestly the joy of the Herzog boxsets (I own both the Shout and the BFI and I highly recommend both) has been discovering all the short films and documentaries. So many curiosities here that really expose you to things I thought I'd never know a thing about.

I've seen all of the films in The Werner Herzog Collection DVD box set and the Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski DVD box set, as well as about a half dozen subsequent movies.

I like Stroszek and I even think that it's wonderful in many ways, but, my God, it's a depressing flick. Incidentally, it was reportedly the film that Ian Curtis of Joy Division watched shortly before committing suicide. If you're already having a bad go of things, then it's the sort of film that could push you over the edge in a big hurry.

Herzog's documentaries are cool, but I'm really not a huge documentary person.

Agree here as well. Not one of Carpenter's finer moments, but everyone seems to love it?

It reminds me of the electronic look of Harakiri, which was due to the contrast-boosting applied by Criterion making the grain looking coarser.

Actually the encoding appears better on the Criterion release. On the surface it may look worse but if you look detail is better on the Criterion release and it's also a tad sharper:

Not so much extra detail just an overall slightly sharper and defined image.

A film from that era is probably naturally pretty 'grainy'. To me the MoC disc looks a bit soft.

I don't see a difference in detail or definition, seems only the grain structure is different.

I'm almost on the same boat, i have the BFI box set but haven't seen any yet, i have seen some of his documentaries that were on Netflix, i found Grizzly Man and Into The Abyss both outstanding.

It looks like the former hasn't got a US release yet, here's hope for a Criterion release, since they have been releasing many documentaries lately.

I was going to buy the Shout! set, but spending over $100 for films I don't think I will love enough to rewatch seems a bit over the top. Furthermore, they're all available for rental on Amazon for about $2 each.

Grizzly Man is an essential. I recall seeing it at the local art house when it came out. There were some dudes laughing during it. My buddy was really upset.

[Show spoiler]Sanjuro takes on 8-10 guys, wiping them out, including slicing a guy's arm off (Obi-wan Kenobi saw this film). The guy is still screaming like a little pu**y as Sanjuro walks away. Well, when it came out, I thought, "FINALLY, John. You made a film that's fun, is funny, doesn't take itself so seriously, and is free (or less cluttered) with your dang Howard Hawks obsession." Felt a bit like that for Christine, too.
