Last month, they announced on the 15th...the month before on the 16th so it will be close...

Well, Criterion generally announces their releases on the 15th of each month. Since it's on a Friday this month, I'm not sure whether or not we'll get the announcement then or on the following Monday. I'm hoping we'll see it next Friday, though.

I spent the day watching World on a Wire. I had previously watched the first part several months ago but I shut it off due to boredom and disinterest in everything that was happening.

Today was an entirely new story. From beginning to end, I thought it was a very good, thought provoking film. I had a general idea of what was going to transpire, but I admire the way it was played out, especially with all of the mystery surrounding the film.

What stood out the most was its relevancy. I don't think we will live in a period where there isn't conspiracies and government secrets.

Hopefully in the film world (post-ending),
[Show spoiler]Stiller will destroy the program.

All depends on how trashed they get on their 4 hour Friday lunch break

Default Bronzing??

Does anyone know what the actual bronzing looks like. I saw the post on the Criterion site with the list of Blu's that could be effected. Of the titles I have on the list, my Howard's End and Pierrot Le Fou look kind of weird. When I watched them last probably within the last year there were no issues with playback. If there wasn't then does that mean my discs weren't affected? Or should I re-watch them now? What does an actual bronzed disc look like. Does anyone have a picture of a bronzed disk?

I hope this hasn't been addressed elsewhere but Im a little worried since both the discs that look weird are of course OOP Criterions lol

The third post on this page shows a picture of bronzed Criterion disc. My copy of Summer Hours was bronzed, and looked exactly like that. I exchanged it quickly and painlessly by following the instructions on the Criterion website:

Thank you that helped greatly. Mine are not bronzed as bad as the ones pictured but they definitely look different compared to my other Criterion blus. Ill have to check some of the IFPI codes just to be safe.

Glad you enjoyed it second time around - this is why I think people should give films they hate a second chance, so many times a second viewing can change your views.

Hence I'm waiting for Boyhood to drop in price so I can buy and give it another chance.... But will shall see lol

You're very welcome. When I tested my copy of Summer Hours to confirm that it was unplayable, I fast forwarded the disc to the 55:00 minute mark and then waited; within a couple of minutes, it hung up, then skipped about 20 minutes forward and began playing after the 1:14:00 minute mark.

I hope your discs turn out to be okay!

Maybe they will do a double director month with a new release of Dressed to Kill and an upgrade for Sisters.

I wanted to offer a response to Polaroid's intriguing question, but finally gave up in frustration and embarrassment ... there are too many celebrated performances among the films in the Criterion Collection that I've not gotten around to seeing!

One performance that would be in my current Top 5 is Michael Fassbender's incredible turn as Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen's Hunger. I was unfamiliar with Fassbender as an actor when I screened the blu-ray, and was blown away by the intensity of his performance. I've since been so impressed by his work in Shame, Prometheus and 12 Years a Slave that he's become one of those actors whose name alone will sell me on a film ...

Watching Insomnia this afternoon for the first time. I really enjoy Stellan Skarsgård and crime films, so I've been looking forward tot watching this one for a while.

Later I'm planning on watching Eating Raoul and two Lane Blacktop. Have to fit in Inherent Vice as well.. won it from a giveaway here last week.

Also, loved the tease for Dressed to Kill earlier this week. Great to have some more Brian De Palma in the collection.

This is what the bronzing looked like on the underside of my Walkabout disc. I photographed it next to a normal disc for comparison. When I emailed this photo to Criterion last year, they promptly replaced it.

Thank you. That helped a lot. Mine have a bronzey cast but its on the entire disc not just around the edges. Ill have to rewatch them and see if there are any playback issues now. They were perfect the last time I watched them but thats been awhile ago.

I watched Kagemusha this afternoon. It was a solid enough film, but it does not come anywhere close to his films of the 1950s and 1960s, especially with Toshiro Mifune.

It's the only one of his films I've seen that I didn't enjoy. I absolutely love Ran, and I do appreciate Dreams, so it's not that I needed it to be a more lively flick in the vein of his 50s/60s movies. It just seemed stylistically like Ran without any of the emotional impact and with much less interesting cinematography. The climax in particular bugged me, with the endless repetitive shots
[Show spoiler]of horsemen getting shot down.
I think I understand what he was going for but it just didn't work for me at all. I was not at impressed with the execution of it either, especially when compared to something like the battle scene from Ran.

It may be something I appreciate more on second viewing but I haven't felt any desire to do so in the couple of years I've owned it.

Yeah, I was thinking to myself, "how many more times is he going to repeat this?"

I really like the concept of the film, the use of color is awesome, and I think the nightmare sequence is cool, but as it went on it dragged on and became less emotional and less of a character portrait and more of a war film.

You really should give Fish Tank a chance. Trust me. It's a great movie. The short film Wasp that's included on the disc is fantastic as well.
