Some of us just like to watch movies and that's okay too...I think

I think seeing Mr. Waits on the David Letterman show a few nights ago had something to do with spurring me on to watching this now. I was pleasantly surprised to see what a good job he did in this film ... although arguably, Roberto Benigni might steal the show. I'm probably not the best person to give an elaborate review of the film itself, but just wanted you all in this forum to know how much I enjoyed this film. (On to the supplements!)
Very glad to see you're also a big Tom Waits fan. Same with me. And Down by Law is a movie that drives me, impassions me and moves me. I don't know what it is about the combination of Jim Jarmusch and Tom Waits but its like the equivalent of cheddar cheese and apple pie... or milk and cookies... or pastrami and rye. You get the idea. They simply make me laugh, PROFOUNDLY, like none other. Well, Roberto Benigni is another actor too (when cast effectively, such as in Jim Jarmusch's films). And I guess you can include John Lurie too (but he's a whole different animal). Anyway, I watched that very same episode of Letterman that night and I laughed myself silly when Tom Waits made a joke: "so what is the one business you can't retire from?"... "the tire business"! HA HA HA HA ha ha ha mua ha ha ho ho he he he haaa heee heee.

I think the reason not many people rave about his short films are because, he's too weird!!! And that weirdness that works well across a long palette, such as a feature length film (Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway... etc) doesn't translate well in an 8 minute short. He's too avant-garde for short films. His shorts feel like too much oddness forced and condensed. And what happens when something is condensed!? Its too bitter, too strong, needs diluting.
Totally agree on that, his shorts do totally nothing for me neither.

One thing for sure ... Tom Waits is unique!

EDIT: I forgot to mention how beautiful the cinematography is in Down by Law. Just gorgeous!

I watched The Rose via the Criterion Blu-ray over the weekend, and it certainly lives up to it's reputation as one of *the* great cinematography films. I'd never seen the film prior to this disc, but was very impressed in general. Midler is outstanding, but it was Frederic Francis that really stole it for me.

I kind of liked their current look of the box set and title artwork. Strange since it doesn't seem that old.

But there are times when I wish Criterion would do a poll where they would giove 3-4 cover art options and let the winner be the cover.

But if they dropped the blue key hint, which we know is Mulholland Drive, doesn't that mean Mulholland Drive is what they're going to announce next?
Or do they drop hints for an announcement two or three announcements away?

it's not always the following announcement. Sometimes quite a bit of time goes by between the hint and the announcement.

Gotcha.
That's what I was wondering.
Never really followed their announcements before. But ever since the "key hint" was posted in the Mulholland Drive thread, I subscribed to this Criterion thread

Or at least months of a few upgrades and new stuff peppered in. Acquiring new films is great, but I don't want their vast back catalogue to take a back seat. There have been stretches of time where I wonder if anything will be upgraded.

Default Jim Jarmusch

I saw Night on Earth this past weekend. I had caught the end of it on IFC more probably 15 years ago and remember being transfixed. Now that I’ve seen all of it, I’d say it is a very cool, unique film. I was quite a fan of Jarmusch back in the day before I knew much about world or art-house cinema. I had not seen or revisited anything from him for years. I’m thinking now that that may have been a mistake.

I like how Jarmusch’s establishes mood for each of the episodes by starting with a series of nighttime shots of each of the cities. The dialogue is tight and effectively written. Most of the acting is top-notch too, although I could have done without Rosie Perez and Roberto Benigni.
I’d rank the 5 episodes as follows:

1. Paris
2. Helsinki
3. New York
4. Los Angeles
5. Rome

Just saw on their site that Moonrise Kingdom is slated for Sept 22. Has this always been the case, I thought it was coming out in July with the rest of the July releases
