Do people really think Criterion is that poor? I know they're not MGM or WB, but give me a break. They're going to charge what they know will bring the money, they invested into the Apu Trilogy, back. They're not dumb. Add on to that, their big name releases like their Wes Anderson stuff, Terry Gilliam films, Seven Samurai, Dazed and Confused, and even their popular French stuff like Jean Luc Godard. They're making money. Maybe not millions above what they spend, but they're not poor by any means.

Default August Titles

You can all thank me for Day for Night being announced! I sent an email to suggestions@criterion.com requesting it about a year ago. I'm sure everyone at Criterion was compelled to get the rights to it ASAP at that point and release it the following year. I'm just kidding of course. For all I know, they took one quick look at my suggestions and then trashed the email. I like to think I made a small difference though.

Day for Night is the only definite buy for me right now.

Dressed to Kill: Blow Out and The Untouchables are two of my favorites films, but I don't think I will be picking this one up. DTK is an interesting film, but has no replay value for me.

Night and the City: I'm a fan of Jules Dassin's work, but don't recall enjoying NATC as much as Rififi or Brute Force. I should probably give it another try though. I am now more hopeful that Criterion will upgrade Brute Force soon.

Two Days, One Night: Haven't seen this one. As a fan of Marion Cotillard and the Dardennes, I look forward to seeing it soon.

The French Lieutenant's Woman: Haven't seen this one either. Looks interesting though. The only other film I have seen by Karel Reisz is Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, which I thought was quite good. So, I want to eventually check out The French Lieutenant's Woman also. It doesn't hurt that at least two great actors (Streep and Irons) are in it.

Agnes Varda in California: I understand what the Eclipse series is about, but I try to avoid buying DVDs if at all possible. Hopefully, Criterion will upgrade Cleo from 5 to 7 and other Varda films soon.

So, overall a solid month.

Ronin getting the Criterion treatment would be awesome since the present blu-ray truly needs improvement in picture quality. A 4K restoration would be sweeeet.

The BFI is touring a restoration of in the UK and I saw it last night at my local Picturehouse. I do believe this is the first time I have seen a Fellini on the big screen! It was my third viewing (previous two on the Criterion DVD). It looked gorgeous - the B&W photography was stunning. I'd not claim to understand it all but seeing it on a big screen helped me pick up some details I'd not seen before - like the way Mastroianni's foot was tapping nervously while he sat at the spar. The ending reminded me a bit of Tati, using fairground-like music to propel the final scene along.

[Is it odd that the most attractive woman in this film for me was Anouk Aimée, the one most plainly dressed and wearing glasses?]

They also showed a trailer for The Misfits - it looked amazing!

Polaroid's one title answer embodied wise-ass-ness, Innocence, sarcasm, sillyness, desperation, and a great visual, with the 7's being L's that were literally spun 180°!!! I can't believe I woke up today still laughing about it

Surprised about the re-release of Throne of Blood. I guess it's been selling really well for it to have exhausted its existing inventory already. The switch is minor compared to other releases as it was already in a standard case (i.e. they're not switch from a Digipak), so they're just dropping the DVD. So less product for the same price

Just watched Dressed to Kill on Netflix, I didn't enjoy it sadly, it was a tad predictable and didn't have much tension...

Oh well, wasn't awful and I wasn't bored it just didn't do much for me, I don't see the need to own it on Bluray.

I did enjoy the museum 'chase' thought that was executed quit nicely, and also loved the the stuff that went on in background when focus was on the main characters, such as the restaurant and on the train station.

But yeah was so-so!

The only Brian De Palma film I like is Passion. In fact, I love it.

Blow Out is solid, but the others...

We already knew it was coming, but I am excited for Day for Night. Feel like I haven't watched any Truffaut in ages. Now we just need Shoot the Piano Player at some point.

I still need to see Passion but I think Femme Fatale was incredible work. Loved the score and so many of the scenes.

I loved Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace... there is something about Noomi I just adore, her accent in Prometheus made me melt lol

I think the trailer was so deceiving that that is why I am disappointed with the film, I went in expecting something different...

I do need to revisit though as I can't remember every detail :P

I'd click thanks, but I'm all out from yesterday still (seems to happen to me every Criterion announcement day). Agree wholeheartedly on Femme Fatale - saw it on opening night of its theatrical run, and was knocked out by it. Would love for Criterion to pry it from WB, as it deserves an HD release (the snapcase DVD on my shelf is painful to look at).

I actually haven't seen all of Femme Fatale but I have heard it's one of his best films. I'll check it out!

It can't be that bad :P

Only reason I got into the Black Dahlia story was due to Marilyn Manson's horrifying watercolours!

De Palma seems to get so much recognition but for me a lot of his films are just average... strange lol

The book is great. I'm afraid the film's quality will let me down.
