Fill in the blank:

mine would be Jean Renoir
I've never seen a David Lynch film. I saw a couple of episodes of Twin Peaks when I was younger because my mom watched it, but I have yet to watch an actual film of his. Any suggestions?

Blue Velvet.
Wild At Heart.
Dune.

Those are where I'd start. Different feelings and styles for all three.

Well, Lynch's films are pretty different from one and other. But I believe his masterpiece is Mulholland Dr. (as if that comes as a surprise to anyone here ). Blue Velvet is excellent, as well, of course. And The Elephant Man is something that he did very early in his career and is completely different from his other work, but it's definitely something you'll never forget.

Those are the three I would suggest.

I watched the documentaries of Louis Malle last year in the Eclipse box set I bought during one of the B&N sales. What a fantastic collection of documentary films I must say! Obviously his "Phantom India" epic was great but my heart goes with "God's Country" (1985) and "...The Pursuit of Happiness" (1986). So genuine.

Completely agree with AaronJ comments, those are his strongest films, i would also add The Straight Story, which demonstrates he can do films not only about weird stuff happening

Thanks.

Yeah, I thought about including The Straight Story, but I was trying to keep it to three choices. If I had included a fourth, that would have been it. Great film!

Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart are definitely the Lynch movies I would suggest for the average viewer. I actually dislike his more... abstract?... stuff. Not knocking those who like stuff like Lost Highway and Mullholand Drive, it's just not for me.

I don't remember anything.
Maybe I was too tired? I don't know.
And I love Ingrid Bergman.
Ditto, one of my least favorite Renoirs. I'll settle for the tired excuse too, perhaps a revisit would help some though.

Yes! I love these documentaries, especially the two you mentioned from the 1980s. I even enjoyed his short piece on cycling, Vive le Tour. I think that his being a good documentary filmmaker made him a better fiction director. Just think that Au Revoir les Enfants followed the American docs, and some of his best output (IMO) came after Phantom India.

Twin Peaks might be a good place to start, actually.

I have seen 6 David Lynch films.
I must say I'm not a fan of his weird films, but I like the mainstream ones:
Elephant man, Dune, Straight Story.

(haven't seen Mullholand Drive)

Naked Lunch isn't a David Lynch film, nor is it very good.

Mulholland Dr. was my first Lynch film when I was about 16. I had no idea what I had gotten myself into.

To summarize this discussion:

Watch everything David Lynch has ever made. Even Dune.

I'm a big fan of Inland Empire as well, although that one seems to get a lot of hate.
