Oddly enough, I just saw the trailer for this on the Sony release of Leviathan. Looks like a hoot.

Watch my copy of The Rose and, wow, it's like watching it for the first time in terms of picture quality. There are things I saw in this restoration that I've never noticed before. Very refreshing.

IMO - a very fine film with an awesome performance from Midler and an amazing soundtrack.

Big thumbs up for this release.

The most likely candidate is Hitchcock's 'Young And Innocent'. The coat has huge significance to the plot and the identity of the wearer of the coat is the question as there's more than one. Plus Criterion have the rights and Network released the UK blu-ray earlier this year.

Interesting! Does the coat in the film look like the one from the clue?

I can't check right now, but the fact that the coat has a belt is vital to 'Young And Innocent'.

Yeah, I'm skimmingi through the movie on YouTube and I noticed they showed the belt, but didn't see the coat. The belt certainly matches that style of coat too

The movie is in Criterion's library too

Just checked Youtube very quickly and the coat does appear. Difficult to see from the resolution how close a match it is. The clue translates as "who is in the coat?", which is the key plot line. I'd be amazed if the clue is for anything else.

Although i said Missing, I would hope it's the one you say because I'd love some more Hitchcock. (but I doubt it somehow)
On the other hand I've never seen Missing and they say it's a great film.

By the way, there's an Italian Bluray of Missing just released!
http://www.amazon.it/Missing-Scomparso-Jack-Lemmon/dp/B00V1DYIP8/

Also, I think it could be Missing more than Young and innocent for this reason:
The ? tells me "Where is the person", and we see only this coat with the person missing.
If they wanted to hint at "Young and Innocent" with a "Who is in the coat" clue, I think they would draw a person with the coat, and eg. a ? on his face or something.

Disorder, Winter's Child, Paris Awakens, A New Life and Irma Vep have all been restored recently and it wouldn't surprise me if Criterion picked up his early work.

Arrow have said that their upcoming Kiju Yoshida set will be region free, so I'd highly recommend folks here check it out. Yoshida is up there with Rivette as Criterion's most egregious omission from its collection so far. Arrow's set will be the first English subtitled release of any of his works, I believe. Limited to 3000 copies.

The Young and Innocent suggestion is intriguing. Criterion has the rights to several early Hitchcock films and they've been sitting on them for awhile. Others that I'm familiar with are:

Downhill
The Lodger
Sabotage

I'm sure Secret Agent and others could be gotten because they are in the public domain. Maybe this is a pipe dream, but could we someday get an Early Hitchcock boxset?

Speaking of Hitchcock, what was the opinion on the newsletter clue that could or couldn't be for I Confess? I'd be thrilled to get that one on CC. More Monty Clift is always a good thing.
