I hope that someone from Criterion reads this thread. I understand if they have to cut costs, but if they're going to continue to print essays at all, and I hope they do, then I hope they strive for readability. A simple foldout brochure with dark text on a light background is easier for us older folks to read.

And yes, I know that the essays are available online. Sometimes I have resorted to reading them there, but that kind of negates the point of physical media, doesn't it?

If everyone who wants booklets to return sends a polite email to suggestions@criterion.com, maybe they'll switch back. Couldn't hurt

Le Plaisir (1952, Max Ophüls)
French Cancan (1954, Jean Renoir)
À nos amours (1983, Maurice Pialat)
Van Gogh (1991, Maurice Pialat)

The grand total for all four films including shipping was $53.62, which averages out to a little over $13 each. All of the films listed above received either "Highly Recommended" or "Very Highly Recommended" reviews from blu-ray.com and include English sub-titles.

Blu-ray review links:

Le Plaisir

French Cancan

À nos amours

Van Gogh

Worth pointing out that the (copious) extras are not subtitled so it might be worth picking up the UK versions of Van Gogh and French Cancan if you don't understand French.

They could put them on the disc as a .pdf file

Until Sunday 11:59PM (CET).

I think it is the first time Amazon.fr acts like that for Blu-rays.
Usually their offers are 3 for the price of 2.
Or 3 for a 30 euro price.

So volume was the only way to get good prices, until now, from them.

For the first time, they officially do a sale like it exists for a long time in other countries, without forcing the consumer to buy 3 or more, as they call it "The week of the video"

Here is the page for the sale:
http://www.amazon.fr/b?ie=UTF8&node=6711172031

It is probably a test for them.

Having it also on disc is a great idea. Doesn't have to be a PDF, just an option in the supplements section to read the essay. They could even have the option of having background music and/or imagery from the film to accompany the write-ups.

If anyone sends a suggestion to Criterion, personally I would prefer it to be a request for a return of the $29.99 releases instead of booklets. 😎

Eh, I'd rather pay the extra $$ and get excellent features. The skinny releases seem too expensive for just a film by itself and too cheap for a Criterion.

Thanks Yami (as well as Roninblues) for the head's up. How can I not purchase the films of a man who wrote a book on Ozu?

As physical media gets more niche I think there's a greater chance of Criterions getting more expensive sooner or later, rather than less.

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

Costco Connection (in-store magazine) coverage of June Criterion releases, and spotlighting The Rose.

Costco Connection is available in the iOS Newstand app. On Android ... as an app IIRC.

I was thrilled to pick up Seven Samurai ... I was debating ordering it during the Criterion Flash Sale.... Can't wait to watch it.

I wanted to ask, is there any chance of Lost in translation coming in Criterion possibly from a new 4K scan?
I don't know how it goes with the studios, rights and stuff..

Interesting stuff about The Rose. Glad to see Criterion getting in such a public area. Happy about your pick up of Seven Samurai, that is one of those films that are so densely layered.

It would be great to see Sofia Coppola in the Criterion Collection. This is her best film still to date and one of my favorites. Good pick.

I just read news that she walked out of directing the live action film "The Little Mermaid". Seems like there was a disagreement with the producers on the lead actress.
