I get the feeling that Sofia probably wanted to tell the story more closely to the original fairly tale, and that the studio wanted something far more upbeat.

I have zero evidence for this theory, btw.

I'm a HUGE Sofia Coppola fan. But yeah, Lost in Translation would fit in perfectly.

Ah dang, that's a shame - tbh would rather she drop it rather than be forced into making the film who others want it if that makes sense...

Would have been very interesting to see how she would have done it though!

Its like Twilight - wasn't Lynne Ramsay originally going to make that, and The Lovely Bones.

Both could have been so incredible had she done them, you watch, we will get a straight up remake of The Little Mermaid now :P Probably mostly CGI like Alice in Wonderland and stuff lol

Life would be a lot more brighter if Lost in Translation was released by The Criterion Collection with a better transfer and a slew of extras.

I am constantly going back and forth between Lost in Translation and In the Mood for Love as my favorite films.

Am I the only here that's seen Somewhere multiple times? (Included in that is multiple times in the theater).

I'm glad that many people like it (Lost in Translation).
I myself have seen it only once.
I liked it a lot but I would like to revisit it in a restored Bluray.
So, anyone knows eventually if it is something that Criterion could do?
Or is it out of the question due to the studio that owns it?

My second request for Criterion is that they refrain from releasing ANY new films already on Blu-ray until they upgrade Le Samourai, The Cranes are Flying, The Naked Prey, Ballad of a Soldier, Bicycle Thieves, The Bad Sleep Well, Pickup on South Street, and the twenty or more other back catalog titles I am desperately waiting on a Blu-ray.

I don't understand the negative response to Somewhere. I think it completely nails so many things. And Elle Fanning was stupendous considering she was, what? 11?

I didn't see it multiple times in the theater, as I hardly ever get to the theater. But I have seen it multiple times.

I can't think of Criterion doing anything better with the transfer/encode.

They are not entirely gone. Le silence de la mer, Limelight, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, and My Dinner with Andre all have booklets.

Yeah, that really needs to happen. I wouldn't watch Virgin Suicides enough to own it, but Lost in Translation would be an insta-buy.

I love lost in translation and the Virgin Suicides. Both would be amazing to get in the collection. Not sure what other of her movies would be contenders cause haven't seen her newer films.

What do you guys think would be worth getting the criterion treatment from her films besides virgin suicides and lost in translation?

Well, the original Hans Christian Andersen story is in the Public Domain, so it's not like she couldn't do a version herself if she wanted to (and could find a production company willing to back her).

I'm seeing a 4k restoration screening at Film Forum tomorrow of Pickup on South Street, so I think you can scratch that from your list pretty soon. As for everything else, complete agreement. Upgrade these major films or tell us why you can't.

Thanks ... that's good to know! I hadn't heard of any in such a long time that I thought they were through with them. (I know ... one should never assume).

I have a super special place in my heart for Lost in Translation. I saw that film 3 times in the movie theater in 2 different cities/states. I had been smitten by a female at the time and got caught up in a whirlwind romance (in 2003) and we saw this film together. My sentimental attachment to this film is unlike any other.

I would too. It's a beautiful film in so many ways and also very sad and funny at the same time. This would be my crown jewel Criterion if it should ever happen.

Haven't seen most of those, but I can agree on Bicycle Thieves. It would look BEAUTIFUL on a Criterion Blu-ray.
