Does anyone know where I can find the release dates for the Eclipse Sets? CriterionForum only has the main releases.

Thanks

EDIT - Found it - DVD Beaver

Great review, Owl. I haven't seen any of the PotA sequels but I may have to check out Conquest just for this connection!

For me, the beginning of Medium Cool seems as if it picks up directly from the traffic jam in Week End, I guess that would be my double bill suggestion

Regarding 3 films By Rossellini Starring Bergman Boxset:

What is the preferred language to watch these films in? I know "Journey to Italy" only has the English version so no choice there, but how about "Stromboli" and "Europa 51" since they have both language tracks selectable?

Not entirely sure, i think the review mentions variations in video quality, but i remember selecting the Italian versions when i saw them, the problem with the English versions is that the audio quality is not very good and i was unable to understand all the dialog and if i remember correctly there were no closed captions for English language.

Glad you found what you were looking for, but I'm not clear what you mean by CriterionForum only having "the main releases". If you go to their main page, click on "DVDs". Just below the alphabetical links, there are three links: "All", "The Criterion Collection", and "Eclipse". Click on the last.

I'm thinking about picking up Seven Samurai at Costco today...on sale.

On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate the special features on this one?

...are all the interviews in Japanese?

Seven Samurai has one of the best supplemental features in the collection, in my opinion. There are two audio commentaries, and there are special features in both English and Japanese (though the lengthier video-based features, It's Wonderful to Create and My Life in Cinema, are in Japanese).

Two great commentary tracks, and over 4 hours of special features, plus a thick 60 page booklet. I'd say it's one of the best all-around packages from Criterion.

Thanks.

I just wish Criterion would do what it did on Battle of Algiers more often.

Which is to get a group of well know actors and/or directors to offer their thoughts on the influence a film like Seven Samurai had on them.

...sometimes the reliance on film scholar interviews gets a little tedious imo.

The Michael Jeck commentary from 1988 is a joy to listen to. Makes watching the film a more enriching experience. This is probably my favorite Criterion release.

So I went to the Criterion Collection office today.

Here's a tweet with a handful of pictures.

https://twitter.com/awest505/status/606890998057299968

It was quite an experience for a genuine fan and the people were seriously cool. One question I asked was "are you film buffs or are do you just work here?" and one guy answered, "we work here because we are film buffs."

There is more to the story and I'm going to write up a blog post about it and other NYC cinephilia geekery either over the weekend or when I get back home.

Just realized that Tweet was for 1 pic only. iDevices only let me tweet 1 image at a time, so I'll post the rest later, probably tomorrow afternoon or Sunday morning. There were about 4-5 pics of the hallways with posters and I got a couple selfies.

Most importantly was that I got to talk to them and ask questions. It wasn't an interview, just chatting about passion for film and what drives us. I learned some about them, and gleaned some things that I probably shouldn't talk about (one is definitely true, others are maybes, others are ruled out)

One of the coolest parts was talking outside with an employee in the building about his experiences working right near Criterion. We did mention a certain celebrity there recently, but the name wouldn't be a surprise.

Will say more. Want to say lots more.

Dude, that is incredible. Is there a waiting list to get invited to the official Criterion headquarters in NYC? How long did it take you to visit them? I have a million questions and don't know where to start.

Working for them would be a dream job to say the least.

Why don't they sell those posters - baffles me.

Not really. They don't really have a tourist facility or anything open to the public. It was really hard to find, and once there, you had to get through two security guards with your photo ID.

There is no big Criterion sign anywhere, which is probably because they specifically don't want to invite people. There were three people up near the front area. The guy that made the "film buff" quip was a younger guy, probably in the lower 20s and he served as the receptionist. There was also a lady up front mailing stuff. So these were the lower level employes.

I did ask a ton of questions and some of them were a bit loaded and calculated because I wanted to get an idea what was on the horizon. I was careful to be chatty, but not make it an interview. So I tried to relate to them on a personal level, and we had some things in common that I'll get into in the blog. I think if I just showered them with the questions I really wanted to ask, that I would have politely been asked to leave. The whole visit was no more than 15 minutes and they even took my picture.

I'd go English for all three. Tag Gallagher discusses why here
