I still think Michael, Mickey, Peter and Davy are groovy, hip and totally outasight.

As far as 60s British bands go, I'd probably have to go with The Beatles, The Zombies, and Traffic as my favorites, with honorable mentions going to Manfred Mann and The Hollies. Then again, I listen to Clapton/Beck-era Yardbirds a lot too, so my list would probably vary depending on my mood.

I'm not too familiar with The Dave Clark Five outside of their big hits, but I do like Glad All Over, Catch Us if You Can, Because and Over and Over a lot.

I'm the exact same way with Fleetwood Mac as you are with the Stones. I love the early Peter Green/Danny Kirwan blues stuff, but don't really listen to anything recorded after Green left and Kirwan was fired. On another note, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Peter Green is an amazing listen, as well.

I used to watch The Monkees when I was a kid, too! Nickelodeon used to show reruns of it, The Beatles cartoon, and Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp in a block on Sunday evenings. If I remember correctly, MTV also showed The Monkees and The Beatles cartoon. I'm going to have to find some of those old episodes.

Gimme Shelter is a visually-arresting film in so many ways, and, the violence and bad vibes of Altamont aside, it drives home one of the most pleasurable aspects of the concert experience, which is people-watching. I was born in 1972, and films like this give me a taste of what life must have been like for those in the 1960s, before we could use cell phones to find and meet up with our friends at concerts.

The Rolling Stones are quite mind-blowing during the Madison Square Gardens performances that kick off the film, and I love the footage of the backplays of the sessions from their album, Sticky Fingers. The concert that I'll be seeing tonight is part of a tour that celebrates a reissue of that album.

I'll be going through the special features later this week.
I really enjoyed Gimme Shelter too. I was around 14 years old when that Altamont concert took place. It's incredible (to me) that the Rolling Stones are still performing today ... 46 years later ... and to sellout crowds no less. Their current tour gets as close as 120 miles from me (Milwaukee, WI at the Marcus Amphitheater). The tickets range from $95 for a lawn seat to about $420 to sit close up (at face value). And it's sold out! Unreal. (Unfortunately, I don't have a ticket).

I sometimes stress out about how much money I spend for any given bluray or bluray order. But when I think of spending $400+ for 1 ticket to a 3 hour (or so) event like this, it makes me feel like spending $100 on a bluray order is peanuts. I don't know about anybody else, but once a concert is over, I have a hard time even remembering the songs I just heard. lol. But with my blurays, I can enjoy them over and over and over again (... but you all already know that).

Come on guys, no mention of the Kinks?!?!? Village Green Preservation Society is perfection. Great run of albums from mid-60s to early 70s.

How about The Association? I've had an album of theirs since I was a loon and had the Just the right sound in my Amazon wish list for years; hearing Windy (the ultimate ear worm) on an ep of Breaking Bad motivated me to get it. It is 2.5 hours of pop genius.

The thing that really surprised me was in the liner notes - someone did a list in the US of the top 100 songs played on US radio in the 20th century; The Association had three titles in the list, including Never my love at #2 (behind You've lost that lovin' feeling - thank you Top Gun), but what was really amazing is that only the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel had more songs than them in the list. Quite a feat for a band (almost) no one has heard of!

Better keep this Criterion: here's hoping yet again for A Canterbury Tale upgrade

IKR! Can't believe it. I'm always surprised how quickly the next announcement day rolls around. It may have felt a little sooner this time because last announcement was late, shouldn't happen this time.

good call.

"I miss the morning dew... fresh air and Sunday school!"

and the Zombies were a great band, too. they had a lot of great songs that flew under the radar.

Wish Criterion could get the rights to Glenngary Glenn Ross.

No American blu-ray release.

I probably would have enjoyed seeing the Rolling Stones any time prior to my college roommate who only seemed to own and listen to Rolling Stones albums. After that I didn't have all that much interest in them any more (this being the mid-70s). Did get their SACDs though, but the ones I got were 60s and early 70s.

Speaking of pricey concerts, friend of mine talked me into seeing Van Halen next month, but he's covering the bulk of the ticket cost because I said I was only interested if it wasn't more than $80 apiece (one for wife, one for me). He of course went for the pricey ones (I think maybe $175 apiece, and he's taking care of the difference), so I guess I'll need to be sure and remember my earplugs. I hope they don't suck too much.

I love that girl who is singing along with "Sympathy for the Devil" and just zoning out while all of the bad things happen. That is a fun moment.

This was my third time seeing The Rolling Stones, after having seen them in 1997 and in 2006, and this was my favorite show of those three.

It's sort of amusing to see all of the key moments from the controversial Rolling Stones days (Altamont, drug abuse, tax evasion, etc.) now incorporated into their massive family-friendly amusement park ride of a show these days, but the band's swagger and edge is still unmistakable.

I got the $99 nosebleed section for The Rolling Stones show last night. It was funny to see all of the nosebleed sections completely sold out, while the $400++ seats down below had some empty areas.

Last night's setlist...

Start Me Up
It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (But I Like It)
All Down the Line
Tumbling Dice
Doom and Gloom
Can't You Hear Me Knocking
You Gotta Move
Some Girls
Honky Tonk Women
Before They Make Me Run
Happy
Midnight Rambler
Miss You
Gimme Shelter
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Sympathy for the Devil
Brown Sugar

Encore:
You Can't Always Get What You Want
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

Obligatory bad iPhone picture...

It's puzzling to me that this hasn't a US release, even more so that it went out of print in the UK and has not come back in some time. I've honestly thought about selling mine, it's been £150 on amazon UK for a while. I'd imagine it will eventually make it's way back in print and in region A, it's close to a 5 star disc with a great transfer and a bunch of extras.

I second this. This film has an incredible screenplay by David Mamet. It's a film scholar's go-to movie when it comes to great examples of effective dialogue in a screenplay. Though the film only has male actors, its a damn good ensemble!

Another memorable moment involving a girl and that song is just before they start playing on Get Yer Ya-Yas Out!. She provides the perfect intro! One of my favorite "live" albums.

I would enjoy if they upgraded Mamet's House of Games and Homicide as well, speaking of the man. I agree about the script for GGGR, it's such a great piece.

Seriously, House of Games is one Criterion DVD I wish they'd upgrade asap. It's almost as great as Glengarry Glen Ross.

I find his dialogue incredibly un-realistic and his films a slog to sit through. One good scene in GGGR... that's it.

EDIT: I do like The Verdict, though. Good film.
