Really enjoyed it. I don't understand the negative reviews.

Check that - it's already hit Redbox but DVD only. And this is why I still have a Netflix disc account.
Ironic, I ended up renting it from the Redbox (first time ever renting from there). I ended up with the DVD but it still was sharp enough for me.

Same here. I just think critics misunderstood the vision behind this film. It's so high tech and cerebral, a lot of people don't take cyber-crime so seriously as other forms apparently. I do agree with some of the critics though that the casting might have been flawed but the characters certainly weren't flat. As I watched Chris Hemsworth, he kept reminding me of a younger, bulkier Brad Pitt.

On the Michael Mann topic, I sure would love to see more of his films in the Criterion Collection, esp. Heat, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

All 4 that I ordered were cancelled too.

I just talked with an amazon representative.
She said they cancelled all orders, even those that showed as "shipped".

Well... she blatantly lied to you then because there is no way that Canada Post has picked up 2 cancelled orders and has moved those cancelled orders into their facilities.

Not sure what your tracking says but Amazon often say shipped for me when they just put a tracking number on it and placed it in a stack for pickup the next day. There's a (slim) chance they could run down and pull them back off the stack.

Still, I would say it's more likely they canceled the ones that hadn't shipped yet when they realized what happened.

P.S. I liked Blackhat as well. Not great, but solid Mann.

yes, this is what she said more or less.
Don't remember the exact words.
Something about pulling back those that were marked as "shipped".

I've seen a miserable bootleg of Gentle Woman, which was a stunner of an artwork. Despite being Bresson's first color, it's as elemental and pure as anything. And an even rougher copy of Dreamer exists, which I couldn't bring myself to watch, but I've read numerous Bresson scholars who hold the film in very high regard. Anyone who brought these titles to blu-ray would be doing Bresson's legacy and world cinema a great favor. Make it happen!!

And in much less than a pipe dream, always happy to see Criterion give their Bresson upgrades. Balthazar is due, and I know Mouchette recieved a lovely transfer from Artificial Eye so it might not be high onmany people's list, but it's a favorite of mine (HD transfer available on Hulu). And Diary of a Country Priest, such a neccessity!
I'm under the impression that the Bresson estate is currently trying to get everything under one umbrella, so the fact that Criterion have thus far released the only Bresson films on Blu-ray in the US would make it safe to assume that the rest of them will eventually reach disc via them in the US. The same goes for Artificial Eye in the UK. That's rights-wise, I'm not sure what state the existing masters are like for those later films, and what sort of undertaking releases of those films would be, in terms of restoration work.

I loved it. It was pretty well received by the circle of critics I look to (and I too reviewed it very positively) and seemed to do better here in Europe than it did in the US. Many of us were quite confused by the US reaction when it opened here later. I often find that Mann's digital films have been on the receiving end of undue flack from a section of the critical community. I actually rate his post-2000 work higher than I do his 90s work (I fully adore Miami Vice, it's his best film for me, and one of my favourite films full stop).

A Gentle Woman has recently been restored by Paramount (and is available as DCP if any intrepid cinema-owners are reading). Reading through the CNC website, they've also funded restorations of Pickpocket (already out via Criterion), Mouchette (already out via AE), Au hasard Balthazar (err...) and L'argent.

I read the same thing you have re: his wife wanting them under one label, but I'm not sure how that's going to work when I'm pretty sure she only owns the rights to Four Nights of a Dreamer.

It would be interesting to know exactly what's going on with the rights, and why Balthazar seemed to be ready to go and then got indefinitely pushed back. You'd think if AE decided to go the box set route they'd let us know after so long (who am I kidding, right?) or there'd be rumours. It's not like these films will be total dead stock, there is a fan base for these releases so it's interesting and sort of frustrating as a fan/consumer

Has anyone heard anything about B&N doing a sale again on Criterion stuff? There are a few movies I'd like to get, but it should be coming close to another sale, right?

I wouldn't count on that. Just noticed that my 2 shipped items are now tracking as "Item is in transit to pickup location." Looks like they managed to call back everything that gets sent out.

I'll be contacting them tomorrow about that. They issue an e-mail stating it has shipped and don't e-mail me to say tha it has been recalled?!?! If I hadn't been tracking progress religiously, as most people don't beyond the initial shipment notification, I'd be expecting the item has been paid for and will be arriving at my door.

The Killers (1946) Blu-ray REVIEW

The Killers (1964) Blu-ray

The Killers Blu-ray REVIEW

Please note that Criterion's upcoming Blu-ray release has all three film adaptations of Ernest Hemingway's short tale in HD (1080p):

1. Robert Siodmak's The Killers (1946)
2. Don Siegel's The Killers (1964)
3. Andrei Tarkovsky's The Killers (1956)

I'd imagine this has been discussed before but has there been any talk about a release of Polanski's "The Tenant" ?

No official clues but its always been a strong possibility as its from Paramount and their dvd has been out of print for a while now.

I would love for Criterion to release The Tenant on blu. I still think it has some really out there sequences, some very eerie.

Default Far From Heaven??

Just finished Safe. I liked it but I didn't love it. Left me wondering whats the likelihood that Hayne's Far From Heaven will come to Criterion? I dont believe it has a blu release yet and it is far superior in story and Moore's performance in my opinion.

I want FAR FROM HEAVEN on BLU from Criterion so much! I love Moore in that film a lot. Safe was a film I just wanted to like more also, but I just couldn't. I will agree it gets under your skin, and there is a lot going on. It isn't for everyone for sure.

but Far From Heaven I want to happen with Criterion so hopefully the wonder cinematography will shine. Would be nice to get Sirks Written on the Wind the same day! I love it.
