Well, I can describe 2 instances where I changed completely my opinion:

1) 2001- A space Odyssey
I tried to watch it at 18. Was very bored and fast forwarded.
Watched it again at 30-31. (on bluray).
Understood that it was indeed a masterpiece. Loved it and I have to say I was on the edge of my seat in many scenes.

2) The Thin Red Line
Watched it at 18 at the cinema. Was bored..
Watched it again 2-3 years later alone on DVD.
Recognised the masterful direction, and technical excellency mostly (music, cinematography etc.). Of course I was moved too but not quite deeply.
Watched it again some 1-2 years ago (at 33-34), and was a total reck psychologically in the end.

As for Blade Runner that was mentioned, I recognize it as a masterpiece visually and aurally, but unfortunately as many times as I have seen it it doesn't do anything to me beyond that.

Just last night I changed my opinion on Spielberg's Jurassic Park. When I was younger, I didn't see it as anything but a showcase for CGI dinosaurs but now I see Spielberg's mastery of the set piece and the way that he brilliantly orchestrates tension.

Like all art, I think your opinion depends on a film depends on context. By which I mean your own personal situation - where you are in your life - and therefore your opinion can change.

I watched yesterday Mr. Hulot's holiday (it was my first Tati) and honestly it was quite a chore to sit through it.
I thought I was a bit prepared by having seen the animation film The Illusionist.
But I feel I may be missing something.

Especially, when I remember other times that I changed my mind completely on 2nd viewing of films that I didn't like the first time and I was bored with them.
Last year I watched the entire box set and each film felt like a chore.

Don't get me wrong, I admire Tati for vision, particularly with such films as Mon Oncle and Playtime, which explore advances in technology, but overall I did not care for any of the films.

My teen self once hated a lot of movies I now love, and vice versa. I was even a Kevin Smith fan once, which is now super gross to me. Pretty normal maturing behavior.

Same here I seemed to like Clerks a lot when I was younger, and laughed hard during Dogma in the theater but now I can't stand any of his movies at all.

I gave some thought to picking up The Black Stallion and Midnight Cowboy, but being that both of them will be (or appear to be) headed for Criterion releases, I think I'll hold off on the Fox releases.

I remember seeing Robert Osborne on TCM one time talk about Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and how it is Bill Cosby's favorite movie and he has watched it every five years, say, and his perspective towards the ending in particular changed over the years.

edit: this was supposed to be in response to Yami's post

I was pretty into Tati around 15 years ago. I've had both previous Criterion editions of Playtime and made a lot of money selling both of them when OOP. This is all to say I think I've cooled on him some. I haven't bought the box set and I don't know if I'm going to. I don't really have a desire to watch the films, at least not repeatedly, so I should use the money elsewhere.

If anyone likes Tati and hasn't seen it, check out The Illusionist: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-I...Blu-ray/20608/ Much better than Triplets of Belleville, which I didn't like at all.

What everybody thinks about Abbas Kiarostami's Close Up? I have recently watched Certified Copy & Like Someone in Love. I liked them both and feel very assured that I am going like his other works.

I think he only has 3 movies in criterion catalog. Is that right?

Close-Up is one of my favorite films of all time. Excellent, excellent, excellent!

Although his "Koker Trilogy" has been confirmed as being released in the future by Criterion, there are only 3 Kiarostami films on Blu-ray. There is one, however, that is only on DVD.

Awesome...There is high probability I may get all 3 in blu-ray, this B&N criterion sale. Yes, I am that impressed!!! Specially coming from you (iScottie), I am even more confident. May be Close Up will be the first one I pick up...since I watched the other 2 recently.

For me, Close-Up is a film I watch at least once a year. It's terrific. I love Certified Copy and Like Someone in Love, too.

Compared to Jurassic World, Spielberg's Jurassic Park might as well be Tokyo Story or Ikiru. It's funny how a lesser sequel can really amp up my appreciation of the first movie in a series.

There have been quite a few Criterion titles that I appreciated infinitely more during my second viewing. I liked Paris, Texas, for example, during my first viewing, but I was not blown away. During subsequent viewings, though, the film has ascended to a high spot on my ranking of Criterion titles.

Paris, TX could be the criterion movie that surprised me most on my first viewing. It was a blind buy and it pulled me in from the very start. I don't know what I was expecting but I would rank it as one of the most rewarding first viewing for a criterion movie. Then I borrowed Wings of Desire by the same director from library and exactly opposite happened, I just could not connect to it... So I decided to try it another time & returned it without completing. Guess I was not in the mood.

I have noticed I am intrigued by movies that which unfolds based on dialogues or interaction of people rather than scattered/obscured thoughts/ideas.

I love the idea behind Wings of Desire, but my first viewing left me cold and disinterested. I really need to get around to giving it another chance.

Just pay $5 for replacement case - NEVER had damaged goods from Criterion

I LOVED Paris, Texas and honestly I thought before seeing it that i would be bored.
Although part of my love was due to the suspense about what had happened.
I'm not sure how it will hold-up in a 2nd viewing..
However I'll buy it in the upcoming sale. (hope it's the 2nd pressing or something).

The thing that spoiled the film though for me was that harsh guitar music right at the climax of the film!
I was about to cry, and that "killed" it!
(i'm versy sensitive in film music matters, as my username also suggests )
