You got rid of one of the best movies of the 1980s, perhaps in cinema history, all because of an innocent fart joke? (which didn't take away from the movie at all)

You're right! This is definitely nothing special after all! It's clearly a reissue...but I bet it still sounds good (though I'm not 100% certain about the quality of this reissue either): http://www.discogs.com/Eduard-Artemi...elease/5010881

A friend of mine runs a record store and I'm constantly amazed at the stuff that's being reissued at the moment. He just got in the score to Stalker, for example. Apparently soundtracks on vinyl are big business right now.

I skip over that scene! In fact when I got that recent BLU of it my roommate noticed I skipped a section he said why'd you do that and I said I can't stand it and it isn't funny never was lol

must be the reason I can't stand The Lion King much either. besides the fact it is the most overrated Disney film next to Frozen.

That fart scene goes on and on and on and it ruins the movie IMO. It wasn't needed it was gross. The rest of Fanny & Alexander was great but I wouldn't rank it so highly even for the best of Bergman I would rank Scenes From a Marriage higher.

It is funny cause I can deal with all kinds of humor and I love Family Guy and American Dad and it doesn't bother me when a character there has an animated throw up scene that goe son for 3 mins lol

I'm similar in that farts don't usually get me, but the way the farts in Good Morning sound makes it very easy to overlook almost in a cutesy way. In short, don't discount Good Morning.

I can't help but view this as childish, more so than the scenes in question. We're talking a brief scene! In Fanny and Alexander, it was one of the few lighthearted, happy moments for the children in the film, he goofed around with them and made them laugh. I found it funny in The Lion King but whatever, different strokes. I really don't get this notion that Lion King is so overrated either, it's such a beautiful, powerful, emotionally stirring experience. It's the best of the Disney animated classics that I've seen. Anyway though, I don't get how a brief fart joke can ruin a 5 hour movie, especially when it doesn't feel out of place. Then again, I think farts are funny.

Yes, leave it to the Japanese to fart politely! The movie itself is both sweet and charming and I'm glad Cera picked it.

I guess I don't like bathroom humor much I find it gross. I can deal with it in the Lion King but if it was shorter in Fanny & Alexander it could just be ignored, instead it never lets up and then when you think ok it's over it goes on and on. I think it makes the film déclassé

You should be happy your wife isn't a nurse. I hear daily "bodily function" stories from mine.

It makes sense. Carl did call himself a &*#$ and a cad. Other than that scene (and the good cop-bad cop scene with the Bishop) it's one of the few scenes Carl isn't screaming or putting someone down.

I haven't seen GM and I turned off F&A one and a half hours in for other reasons, but it sounds to me like the gas passing in both of these films is more of a depiction of a realistic situation rather than an attempt at eliciting laughter.

Kids find farts funny. Again, no idea what goes on in GM, but a farting contest between kids is not funny for an adult, but it might be an accurate depiction of childhood behaviour.

Ryan Reynolds on a date with a girl who can't stop passing gas because her friend's family insisted on her eating tacos with them is not only not funny, but it is dumb. It would be played for laughter and it would fall flat.

The F&A instance, as it was explained by another poster, is more about the situation - an adult making the child laugh rather than Bergman attempting to make his audience laugh.

Ehhhh, I wouldn't go so far as to say that the farts in Good Morning are intended to be realistic. I think they are played for laughs, I've read elsewhere that Ozu was not above toilet humor, but I think in Good Morning the farts are easily ignored, especially as a westerner who is far more familiar with the specific noise associated with a farts in western films.

In any case I don't think it is entirely fair to say that only kids find farts funny. There are plenty of people who get a laugh out of toilet humor as adults, and while we can call it lowbrow we can't deny that there are different strokes for different folks.

*Reading over my own thoughts is hard. Ignore me*

You know I haven't watched Fanny and Alexander in a long time and frankly can't remember the fart scene, but there are a ton of other amazing scenes in it that did stick with me.

This coming from someone who is not a fan of toilet humor either. Just don't find it funny.
