Fun idea. With the BN sale rumored to start on July 7, we could pick a June or July title since they'd be both timely and easy to pick up:

My Dinner with Andre
Master Builder
The Bridge
(which several have already seen)
Fisher King
Five Easy Pieces
Valerie and her Week of Wonders
The Killers

Is there a poll tool on the site? We could let voting go through the weekend of July 4th.

This has been tried here in the past, and it's gone over like a lead balloon every time. I've always liked the idea on paper, but being compelled to do something as an assignment always sort of sucks the fun and spontaneity out of it for me. There's also an economic factor involved, because not everyone has purchased a given movie.

I personally enjoy watching what I want to watch on the spur of the moment, and my enthusiasm tends to fade when I handle viewings in the same way that I would handle assignments.

For instance, my favorite film genre is film noir, and I'm always enthusiastic about discussing that genre, but my participation in the Turner Classic Movies online course on Film Noir this month has been sporadic at best.

This should hit the spot for what you're looking for:

and if you can find this Criterion that's out of print, a good triple feature!

I live in Smyrna now, and the new place is only 10 miles farther outside the perimeter for those times when I want to go into the city for races, occasional movie showings, and such. I'll be walking distance from grocery stores and less than a mile away from a big 24-screen theater that occasionally features retro showings and indie flicks. Sadly, the Barnes & Noble in Kennesaw does not have a media section, but there are plenty of those just a little farther south. Of course, there's a Costco less than a mile away.

I'm not going to pop the champagne cork until after the closing, but all is going well so far. I've always rented, so this is my first rodeo when it comes to owning a home. I'm excited and freaked out at the same time. Mortgage + property taxes + home insurance will total less than what I'm currently paying for rent, but my movie funds are still going to take a nice hit because of routine home maintenance and upkeep stuff. I'll still have a good bit of disposable income, though, and God knows that I've got plenty of still-unwatched discs.
Congratulations! I've always rented myself also, and am looking into buying in the somewhat near future. I hope that it all goes smoothly!

Just a head's up for the folks that want to see A Bright Summer Day (me being one of them): to great surprise, TCM is showing the film... months away from now at 2:30 AM.

It's odd, to say the least. Curious what print they're using, because the only one I know of is in horrible condition. I know the Criterion title has been in the works for some time. Hm. Needless to say, I'll be setting my DVR by the time September comes.

I don't know what extra restoration Criterion are supposedly doing, but the World Cinema Foundation restoration was first screened in Cannes in 2009.

I wouldn't get my hopes up. TCM often airs stuff that makes me wonder if I need glasses!

Excellent information. Thanks so much for sharing!

Question for those who organize their collections by director. Do you do this for your whole collection, or just for directors that you really enjoy and/or have a large collection of? I started to transition to this with some of my favorite directors but am unsure of how far down this particular organizational road I want to go. It felt weird enough removing Criterions from the Criterion section of my collection.

I used to do this, before I started buying more "crap" or random titles from a director who I am not interested in owning all of or more than one of their films. It got hard to make sense of it after a while. I like yours though, and the idea of a "directors library". Looks really cool.

I'm wondering if the Mods will allow a "Criterion @ Costco" Thread? I'm curious if the Costcos all over have the same Titles?

I tend to wait for Criterion's own 50% Sale or whatever our local Costcos have in stock.

I would imagine you could start a thread like that in the deals portion of the forum.

I saw Michael Powell's Peeping Tom last night for the first time and thought it was great. It is definitely, IMO, in the same league as Don't Look Now as far as artful horror films go. The relationship between the protagonist and his female neighbor was also reminiscent of the relationship between the two main characters in Le Boucher.

I'd say if you like any one of the 3 films I referenced here, you should seek out the other 2! Great stuff!

I usually check this thread for Costco Criterion deals.

And the current list of Criterion titles is in the post #3.

I really disliked Peeping Tom to the point that I couldn't wait for it to end.

It's a shame because I admire Michael Powell.

Back in the day, with my LDs and DVDs, I had a rather arcane and complex set of criteria for shelving my movies. I didn't generally group titles by director, but did so for a handful of favorites. They were mostly the relatively modern favorites, though (like David Lynch, Ang Lee, Atom Egoyan, and so on) as the classic favorites like Ford, Hawks, et alia were filed with other films by other criteria.

With my BDs, I did try to separate out some favorite directors, but other criteria kept getting in the way. Like, say, Kubrick, where a couple are Criterion, one's a Kino, some are DigiBooks, and so on (and I felt funny not having 2010 next to 2001).

My current filing system for my BDs is to have certain labels grouped together (Criterion, Cohen, Cinema Guild, Twilight Time, et alia -- mostly the "boutique" labels). For the rest, I've separated out series titles (Bond, Bourne, Hunger Games, Planet of the Apes, etc.), foreign language titles (filed by country), animated titles (with Disney, Pixar, and Studio Ghibli each grouped together), and TV titles (with HBO series grouped together, as well as non-US series). Everything else is strictly alphabetical.

In thinking about it, the closest I come to grouping any director's work together is for Kevin Smith: since all of his films (at least, all of the ones I have on BD) are interconnected, they're all grouped together on the series shelf under "J" (for "Jay & Silent Bob").
