A City Of Sadness seems perfect. I don't know if it's ever had an official home release with English subtitles.

I want Maborosi on blu ray. It's one of the 10 most beautifully shot films I've ever seen

Yep. I'm a huge fan of Confession. Spiritual Voices is good, but I definitely prefer Confession.

Your Tetralogy Of Power suggestion is wet dream material

I too caught Satantango theatrically last year, and while I remain in awe of the fact that it exists I'd be lying if I said I had any real affection for it. Generally speaking I quite like Tarr too, but Satantango just never clicked for me.
The market for those films is not particularly big. At the same time, Criterion have released films by smaller directors than Tarr. e.g Pedro Costa. So maybe there are rights issues.

Criterion aren't exactly poor. Their Terry Gilliam, Wes Anderson, and other films like Dazed and Confuses, Seven Samurai, Breathless are all huge sellers. They have the funds to at least releases a DVD somewhere down the line.

Jeanne Dielman would be great, but The Cranes Are Flying is my most wanted upgrade.

Sure, it's those releases that effectively subsidize the smaller releases.

I doubt they made much money on that Costa boxset, but I'm so glad they released it.

Also wish Criterion would release some Naruse; although I get the feeling that's partly to do with the condition of the material/rights issues.

It's tied with Jeanne Dielman as the highest ranked film in the most recent Sight and Sound poll not yet announced anywhere for Blu-Ray.
The Cinema Guild Turin Horse blu-ray is very good. I want to revisit it again and may try to split it into 2 viewing sessions.

What release, currently not on blu-ray in any region preferably, would knock your socks off if they received the Criterion treatment?
Well, I was ecstatic when Criterion released A Hard Day's Night ... and would be even more ecstatic if Criterion were the ones to finally bring Let It Be to blu-ray.

Do you have hulu? They have, pretty much all, of Naruse's masterworks on there and in great condition. I'd say at least worthy of a DVD, and some look HD to my naked eye. Certainly as good as or better than the BFI and Eureka releases. It has to be a rights issue.

At the same time, sadly, I think it may be because they don't project high sales. When a Woman Ascends the Stairs was released 8 years ago and I can't imagine why they haven't released another film by him since. I mean, the least they could do is get out Floating Clouds, since it's in the top 3 greatest Japanese films list by Kinema Junpo.

I think it may come down to getting Paul's OK. If he's worried what fans will think of him in the film then all he has to say is: "hey, I was young and did some dumb things". All would be forgiven.

I absolutely hate to say it, but I've never seen one of his films. Of course, I just saw my first Ozu film last month. But man, am I psyched for The Assassin. It looks truly rapturous, and the reviews have made it out as a really fascinating endeavor. I can't wait until early next year. As little as I get out to the theater anymore, that is one film I will definitely not miss.

Speaking of Cannes, anyone heard anything about or has seen Jia Zhang-ke's Mountains May Depart?

Milestone will be releasing this on Blu-Ray but it has been "coming soon" for a couple of years now

Well they have a lot of them up on Hulu and some of them in HD. I'm just hoping that they don't get released on Eclipse
