I'm pretty sure that Ju Dou was the first film I saw with Gong Li, or directed by Zhang Yimou for that matter. I've been a massive fan of both ever since. What an excellent film.

Yeah, their early collaborations are so amazing, but Ju Dou is something special. The scene in the hole near the end, if you remember, is one of my most favorite scenes I've ever seen. Also, I really like love stories that feel doomed in some way, and Ju Dou fits that.

Hopefully we see his early stuff, from Red Sorghum to To Live on blu ray some day.

A lot. But my random title generator is giving out Satantango at the moment.

That's one I've always been curious about. Admittedly, Tarr's films are an endurance test for me. I have to be in the right frame of mind going in.

What about Raise the Red Lantern? I keep meaning to check it out but the HK DVD has been OOP for years

More Zhang Yimou is always a good thing. And the more Gong Li, the better.

Tarr and Sokurov need to be part of the Criterion Collection. They have released films from far inferior directors than them.

How wonderful a release of Sokurov's "Tetralogy of Power" would be! Or for that matter, a set of his documentaries -- including the big ones, Confession and Spiritual Voices.

Red Sorghum especially. It was only released on home video in the US on VHS. No LD, no DVD.

With all the buzz coming out of Cannes for The Assassin, I'm hoping it gives some incentive for Criterion to add Hsiao-hsien Hou to the collection. He deserves it.

The Turin Horse certainly felt like an endurance test to me (though I had the feeling that that was the point), but I caught Satantango on a 35mm print and it was maybe the best cinematic experience I've ever had. I have a feeling it might not have quite the same effect on home video, but I'd love to see it restored and released nevertheless.

It's tied with Jeanne Dielman as the highest ranked film in the most recent Sight and Sound poll not yet announced anywhere for Blu-Ray.

Amen. It's criminal that they (and no other US distributor) haven't released Dust in the Wind or A Time to Live, A Time to Die yet considering they've both been restored and released in Taiwan (with English subtitles!)

I know! I've been considering buying the set for the last few weeks after discovering that it exist; it's damn pricey, but if a company like Criterion (or really any US or UK distributor) aren't going to release any of his films, I'd say it's probably worth it.

Apart from a few Japanese directors (thank god one of them is Ozu), Criterion is actually pretty slack when it comes to Asian cinema.

Jeanne Dielman is probably my most wanted upgrade, and most wanted release full stop this side of Rivette.

I too caught Satantango theatrically last year, and while I remain in awe of the fact that it exists I'd be lying if I said I had any real affection for it. Generally speaking I quite like Tarr too, but Satantango just never clicked for me.

I'll second this. I already have both Peppermint Candy and Oasis on blu, but I'd cheerfully buy them again with some special features.

Koreeda too. I thought Like Father Like Son was as good as Still Walking and deserved better than a dvd only release in the US.
