I'd love to have seen Malick's version of Che...

Do we even know if that's what they walked away with, or whether they were you know, doing that for the camera? I know I would take a pic of grabbing everything if I was there.

Do the individuals lucky enough to enter the Criterion closet keep the films they pick out?

I think they do, Alec Baldwin picked out something for his friend.

Thanks. In the past week I watched Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant and The Merchant of Four Seasons for the first time and loved all three. I can't believe it took me so long to finally get around to them as I'm a huge Douglas Sirk fan. I was curious about his films before his Sirk influence.

Interesting. I always thought of it as a "damn, this movie is awesome, everyone watching should check it out."

Watch Alfonso Cuaron's episode. They completely ignore the cameraman and browse the selection and fill up an entire bag of titles.

A couple other films came to mind ... how about Freaks or They Shoot Horses, Don't They?. I'm not sure if they'd knock my socks off, but I'd be pretty excited to see them.

Funny, I've known that starting date for weeks, but your post just happened to make me realize that that's this upcoming Tuesday, just 3 days from now. (Boy have I been preoccupied!)

Koreeda too. I thought Like Father Like Son was as good as Still Walking and deserved better than a dvd only release in the US.
"Peppermint" reminded me about Diane Kurys' Peppermint Soda. I'd like to see some of her early work get some (proper) releases: Peppermint Soda (which I have not seen), Cocktail Molotov (which I might have seen, not sure) and Entre Nous (it had a non-anamorphic dvd that was no great shakes, but it's a film I definitely like). Criterion or otherwise.

It's a very good film, AFAIC. Deneuve is pretty much the entire film, you really experience nearly everything from her perspective, and she gives a stunning, powerful performance.

There is some great imagery, much of it disturbing. And there's a lot to consider and think about once it's over. I think it's one of Polanski's strongest films, even if it's a very small film compared to things like Chinatown.

If nothing else, it's worth watching and re-watching for Deneuve's bravura performance.

I agree that it's a masterpiece, but I know some people that hate it, so probably would not suggest a blind buy (unless you buy all Criterions like I do). It's a psychological thriller that focuses on one character. I think it is stunning, engaging, one of the great female performances of the 1960s, but some people I respect think it is boring.

Let us know what you think.

It's a real celebration of the work both Polanski and Deneuve did that its unsettling nature holds up after this time.

I didn't really like it that much in my only viewing of it. The main character just annoyed me to no end. I did think it did a great job at making you feel uncomfortable. I personally would suggest renting or watchkng on Hulu first, but it depends on your tastes of course.

It's been quite a while since I last saw it, but I remember thinking it was simply okay. I didn't hate it and I didn't love it. I'd recommend renting it first before taking the plunge.

I like it and Catherine Deneuve is still gorgeous even in her extreme emotional swings but, as mentioned, it is mostly a one person film and weather you want to watch a person's
[Show spoiler]downward spiral from emotionally fragile and barely hanging on to the ability to interact with the outside world to complete withdrawal into her own world.
I'll echo what others have said about giving it a test drive before purchase. It's a title I always add to my list of "to purchase next sale" titles but it always gets bumped for something else.

Funny you mention Horses, I just read the novel with the hopes of watching the movie after - alas, Netflix doesn't have discs of that film available. I'm interested in seeing it but Jane Fonda irritates me like nothing else.
