About an hour away from seeing the Apu Trilogy courtesy of the Austin Film Society. This'll be my first time viewing them, and am as giddy as a schoolgirl with anticipation.

Earlier this afternoon, I finally watched my Criterion Blu-ray of Jonathan Demme's Something Wild.

Something Wild is a marvelous movie, and this afternoon's viewing was my first time seeing it after decades of being intrigued. I first found out about this film many years ago by way of the soundtrack, which includes New Order, UB40, Big Audio Dynamite, David Byrne, Fine Young Cannibals, Oingo Boingo, X, The Go-Betweens, Timbuk 3, and, most importantly, a performance by one of the most underrated bands of the 1980s, The Feelies. Now that I've had an opportunity to see the film at long last, I get the feeling that this was a solid lead-in for the unpredictable features from the likes of Quentin Tarantino that would become popular a few years later. The soundtrack is mainly heard in short bites, but it inserts a unique energy into the storyline to make it shine uniquely as a 1980s neo-noir of sorts.

I wonder if the screenwriter, E. Max Frye, had seen Dino Risi's Il Sorpasso before writing up Something Wild. There are so many parallels between these two movies, and they both hit the ground running by introducing a reluctant and uptight character who gets drawn into a gloriously eventful road trip.

I love road trip movies in general, because of the way that the locations add a flair to the storyline, and Something Wild is a highlight in this regard.

Just watched Inside Llewyn Davis in prep for its Criterion announcement (by end of this year)!

I really loved the scenes in New York, but felt like it derailed kind of randomly and lost me for a while, though I liked the ending. Definitely one I'd want to rewatch.

Wrote a full review here: https://popculturepundit.wordpress.c...yn-davis-2013/. Not sure if I'll buy this day-one, but certainly an intriguing film and I really enjoyed the music and lead performance by Oscar Isaac.

Haven't seen this mentioned and I know we're all hopeful for the eventual upgrade, but just in case I ordered Four by Agnes Varda a couple of days ago. 22.99 even thought it's OOS right now. Still a great price considering.

Me, too, Aes! The Apu Trilogy is coming to Atlanta for a week in August, and I planned my vacation so I'd be sure not to be out of town that week. Super excited here.

Are they showing them on sequential weekends in Austin or all of them on the same several days? I think they'll be staggered here if it's like our art theater has done in the past.

Amazon has the Criterion BDs listed for preorder with no date. I notice the film showings aren't scheduled past 15 October, so I wonder if this is an October release. Of course, it would be a great Christmas release, too. I'm pretty sure this is going to be my release of the year.

Let us know how they look.

Try Vanya again some time, it's a real hidden gem in the collection, I think.

The vast majority of Criterion blu-rays are $40 at B&N.

But a handful, such as The Battle of Algiers, are $50.

...anyone know why?

It's a 2-disc Blu-ray, which retails for $50 - http://www.criterion.com/films/248-t...tle-of-algiers. I believe all the 2-disc Blu-rays go for that.

Breathless is three discs (including the dvd copy).

...and it goes for $40.

Same thing with L'Eclisse.

The dual-format releases were priced the same as releases that are blu only. It's really only based on the number of blu-ray discs.

I guess I assumed that the movies with three discs are comprised of two blus and one dvd.

...is that wrong?

A media article basically confirmed that it'll be November, which makes sense if the screenings are ending in October. We are getting them in September for two weekends only at the local indie theater and I'm hoping to at least catch the first two.

Blind buy for me, but, as a big fan of French New Wave, at this price it's hard to resist. Hope it comes through!

I've seen Cleo From 5 to 7 but the real attraction (other than the price) would be Vagabond. I have a friend who highly recommends it and we usually see eye to eye on films. Mine is scheduled for delivery on Thursday. Fan of the new wave as well. Since I was 15 I fell in love with Godard, Truffaut and Melville (namely with The 400 Blows and Shoot The Piano Player) but only then would I discover some of my favorites of all time in Vivre Sa Vie, Alphaville, Breathless, Le Samourai, and Le Cercle Rouge. Made In U.S.A. is another but that one seems to get a bit more negative attention than most of Godard's other works. Either way cheers on the purchase!

It's about time. Something Wild was actually one of the first Criterions I ever bought....

What is the best Ray film to start out with? Obviously, the Apu Trilogy isn't out on BluRay. Of the 3 available, which one do you guys consider the best one?
