@oildude, wow, that's quite a comprehensive list... is it your personal collection...? I feel kind of good, knowing that pretty much every criterion I've got recently is part of that list. hehe.

Yep. I really like the Japanese, Russian, selected French, Italian, and German films....and Bergman. I am new to Chinese films and like all the ones in the Criterion Collection. I could have added the Fassbinder films (German), Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy, and the remaining Antonioni's alienation films (L'avventura, L'Eclisse, and La Notte) but left them off because the list was getting really long.

Repulsion is British and Polanski and I just couldn't bear to leave it off. If you want a foreign language British film, try Kes.

Default Revanche

Just finished watching Revanche for the first time. Loved it!!! Just wanted to give a quick thanks to all of the people here who recommended it over time. It was because of all that feedback that I blind-bought it. I'm not sure if I ever read anything bad about it (... although now that I said that, I'm sure somebody will have something to say). It was not at all what I was expecting ... and that's a good thing. Now onto the supplements.

When the new Throne of Blood package comes out next month, the only difference will be that the DVD will not be not included with the blu-ray. You're safe to wait if you don't care about owning the dual-format release.

Well, maybe - It'll be in a plastic case instead of a digipak, right?

Some people prefer one or the other...

The dual-format Throne of Blood release comes in a plastic case, not a cardboard digipak.

It was amongst the group of my first Criterions that I ever bought a few years back. I still own it, so that must mean the blind buy went well.

Ah, I have it and forgot. Well then, it should only be the DVD being dropped.

Again, my points only ever were:

1) that the poster could not claim to remember the exact positioning of a title in a screening they saw 20 years ago.

2) The universal consensus is NOT that the blu ray looks like 'trash' as the poster claimed.

There might well be a framing issue. That would in NO WAY play in to the two points I was making and stand by.
The point is that you put yourself in an argument involving something you've never seen. Where is the sense in that? I'm glad you have your own numbered lists and opinions about it, but I was just saying what I felt should be said to anyone reading the boards wanting legitimate information.

Well, you might have a point ... except that I already own Throne of Blood, and it's not housed in a digipak ...?

edit: Never mind, I see someone else already responded.

Yep I was mistaken, cleared up later. I was thinking of Hidden Fortress I guess?

One person claimed it looked like trash, and I said the majority of reviews didn't agree. That is useful information for anyone reading the boards wanting legitimate information and specifically to the person (Ray Jackson) wondering if it was safe to open his copy of the blu rays.

Hidden Fortress was also in a plastic case. Only 1BD+2DVD dual format sets came in digipaks, and even then, some of the later ones came in 3-Disc plastic cases, such as L'Eclisse. Throne of Blood,Hidden Fortress and other 1BD+1DVD dual format sets were all plastic case.

Does anyone know if Criterion has said anything about UHD Blu-Ray? I presume they won't support it this fall but I wonder about 2016. It seems implausible that they would ship triple format packages. Will they finally drop DVD?

I seem to recall that it took them a little while to support Blu-Ray so maybe they'll take their time with UHD BD as they wait for the install base to grow a little.

I also wonder how they'll handle HDR and WCG in their restorations.

How about George A Romero's Martin? underrated cult vampire film that needs to be in a SE BD badly.

Or this unique cult rock opera?

Vampyr was moody, creepy, earthy, and a little scary. It's a pretty rapid 73 minutes, with only the slow parts being those where Allan Gray reads about vampires. Dreyer treated the film kind of like a silent film, which I'm kind of meh about. The book readings would have been perfect as a voice-over, but I can understand if there was some trepidation to do that. Still, it's a pretty good movie. It would be cool to see it in high-definition, but that would probably be an extensive and lengthy restoration. I hope to comb through the bonus materials sometime before it goes back to the library.
Its one of my favorite horror films. One of the coolest things Criterion did was to have the alternate English language version where they replaced the massive amount of text material in the film (inter-titles and even shots of book pages) with English language versions that were carefully prepared to match the look of the original. For me it made it a lot easier to watch the film than to read a subtitle overlay over foreign language text. Massive props to them for a terrific implementation of the idea (this was also why I additionally picked up the Kino release of Noseratu, despite the MoC release being more robust). The packaging for this film was also fantastic with a book that included an earl screenplay and Le Fanu's novella that served as a loose inspiration.

You should definitely see the Jorgen Roos feature length docu of Dreyer's career, it's worth the price of admission.

The DVD transfer was made from an HD master, but we don't know if it remains suitable for a blu-ray release. Also the soft gauzy look of the film may not make it stand out as much as high-contrast crisp B&W movies like Night of The Hunter. But yeah, I'd still be up for an upgrade (Hoping MoC does the honors first, so I have an excuse to pick up their release with the Guillermo Del Toro commentary )

Not sure if you're taking about me, but I posted about the positioning of the title card in Bleu. Being a projectionist in the late 80s-early 90s, I actually DO remember that film rather well, because I loved it and always watched the mesmerizing opening when I ran the film. The correct framing would indeed put the title in the center, just as the Laserdisc and DVD had it. It wasn't until the blu-ray that the framing of the whole film became off.

I wasn't talking about you, but you claim to remember where every logo of every film you ever projected sat?

I watched it on Hulu and it didn't click with me for some reason. Weird because from what I heard and read it seemed like a sure thing. I have to say I've never seen
[Show spoiler]so much wood chopping/cutting since the Andy Griffith episode when Gomer leveled a forest to repay Andy's good deed. I get that it was therapeutic for the guy but after awhile it became an eye-rolling distraction.
I'll give it another chance but like Overlord, on paper it seemed like an automatic thumbs-up but wasn't.
