Even though I bought Le Samourai on DVD during the sale last month I loved it so much I hope it does come to BD in November. I'd buy it again without hesitation. The others I'm not really interested in.

Not sure if this has been mentioned here, so I apologize in advance for a repost but Mulholland Dr. is on HBOGo for anyone that wants to watch it before the criterion comes out.
So i know everyone absolutely loves this film but is it me or does the movie have a weird soap opera feel to it. For me though the plot was neat and a good film, it really bothered me the blurry/soft soap opera lens and lighting. I noticed that blue velvet and twin peaks seem to be shot the same way, so i know many on here view lynch as wonderful filmmaker, i am not sure i can get over his visual style. In addition, once again going along with the whole soap opera feel, i feel like the acting seems to often be overdone. I thought naomi watts did a great job but the rest of the cast was a bit underwhelming.

Well, it was the pilot to a soap opera that was not picked up for series and later extended/reshot to be a feature film. When watching, you can actually pinpoint the moment where it becomes more than a pilot. About 88 mins in, when the girls open the box. Also, Twin Peaks was a soap opera.

well that makes sense lol. I don't know if I am a fan of Lynch, I had high expectations for this film based on all the hype here. I'll have to revisit in the future.
One thing the film made me want to do is watch both Persona (because of the whole underlying dreamlike/ love obsession) and Pulp fiction, mainly because of the diner scenes haha

Lynch is an acquired taste. I, myself, am not too fond of Elephant Man or Blue Velvet. That said, Twin Peaks (specifically the series, and not the feature), Lost Highway, and Wild at Heart are all masterpieces in my eyes. Eraserhead is decent, not my favorite flick, but it is scary at 1 AM. Fire Walk With Me is bullshit (and I recently caught it on 35mm). Still have to see Dune, Straight Story, and Inland Empire. In ranking his features (the seven I've seen):
7. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
6. The Elephant Man
5. Blue Velvet
4. Eraserhead
3. Mulholland Dr.
2. Lost Highway
1. Wild at Heart

Good list.

It's about time for another Hitchcock film, so I'll throw in Lifeboat. Fox doesn't seem interested in releasing it, so maybe they'll license another film to Criterion. I have the Eureka release, but I'm always up for a Region A release of everything so I can play it on more than my Region Free player.

Oh Happy Day!

I just won my eBay bid for The Third Man. I've seen a lot of copies on sale so if you want OOP, now is probably the time. I think people are dumping theirs and upgrading to the 4k release. I'll probably buy that too, but this has been my holy grail of releases.

For those wondering, I paid $100. The auction was at $60 until someone bid up the price in the very last minute. It happens. Fortunately I had a high bid of $120 and they ran out of time. I've seen other auctions go for $60-80.

Nice!

I scored a "Used - Like New" Criterion Blu-ray of The Third Man for $75 last year, thanks to a tip from someone here on the forum, and it's pretty great. I prefer the 4K StudioCanal disc in terms of transfer quality, but I'm keeping both of them because of the different extras.

I'm still looking for a Criterion replacement case for The Third Man, since the copy that I bought was the old digipak. Right now, I keep the disc and booklet housed in an empty plastic Scanavo case.

That's a nice score as well!

I'll have that same problem since the one I just purchased is sealed and unopened, hopefully in decent condition. The replacement cases seem even tougher to come by.

I think the $200 market for this release is a thing of the past.

I'm so pleased for you! I always get a vicarious thrill when someone finally gets something they really, really want. It couldn't have happened to a nicer, more deserving Criterion collector!

Othello, tomorrow.

At criterionforum, they've already reviewed "Day for Night" and there isn't any mention of the presence of English audio. It seems like a serious omission; how many of those voting it Best Foreign Language Picture saw it with French audio? Many of the extras are from the Warner DVD, so I don't know why the English audio couldn't be included. The English audio on the DVD is very good; the English subtitles awful. I'll hold out for an international release with the original audio options.

I like The American Fiend, but would not rate it anywhere near the trilogy. Have not seen Until the End of the World.
Until The End Of The World is pretty ordinary.

Wenders is a second tier European director whose entire reputation rests on like 2-3 films.

I have never understood the fuss about him, and I like Alice In The Cities and Paris Texas a lot, and can appreciate Wings Of Desire for what it is, although I didn't stand up for me over time.

If you look at Wenders' career as a whole, it isn't that remarkable. He has more misses than hits. Of course one can say the same for many other directors too, like Coppola, for example, but that's a different story.

Wishlist round II ..

I hope Criterion scored another Frank Capra film be it Mr. Deeds, You Cant Take It With You, or American Madness - Ive been hoping at least one of those will get an HD release.. Id retire the set and get the singles for the last two

Im also a fan of the Chestershire classics of the 30s and enjoy classic Hollywood movies , Id be so happy to see older titles such as They Made Me A Criminal , The Great Flamarion (an Anthony Mann film BTW) , The Man on the Eiffel Tower, The Midnight Warning, The Wayne Murder Case , DOA, Detour, etc . The Big Clock would be great as would the other Universal Noirs

Id love for some of my Alpha classics to wind up on bluray . Criterion or otherwise I know that many of them will be unlikely, as my DVD collection dwindles Ill probably have nothing but Alpha Video and Image/Wade Williams titles left
